Avanti Brahmana and Bhiksu-Gita

U - Uddhava-gita (7-29) Avanti Brahmana and Bhiksu-Gita Chapter 23 Krishna narrated the story of a brahmana from Avanti who was plagued by greed and miserliness, and later found himself being exploited by his very own family members. Aside from them, his wealth was snatched away by thieves, governments, time and ultimately the will of providence. In that dire condition, stripped of everything, left poverty-stricken and alone, a deep feeling of renunciation developed within him. In an outpouring of spiritual realisation, he described the evils that arise with the acquisition of wealth; one loses their character and their relationships, spiralling into more and more misery. He concluded that the time had come to embrace detachment, and thus entered the sannyasa order of life. Begging from door to door, he was often verbally and physically attacked by ignorant persons unaware of his spiritual calibre. The Avanti brahmana , however, was completely fixed. In one celebrated verse, he described how the mind is the cause of all distress, and in another famous verse, known as the ‘sannyasa-mantra,’ he described how one can cross the insurmountable ocean of the material world through unbreakable determination in devotional service.

Deity Worship and Bhakti-Yoga

U - Uddhava-gita (7-29) Deity Worship and Bhakti-Yoga Chapter 27, 28, 29 Uddhava requested Krishna to detail the process of deity worship. In response, Krishna first explained the different ways in which the deity can appear. The worshipper ( pujari ) must be clean, chant appropriate mantras , use the best paraphernalia possible, recite the holy name, and most of all, offer the worship with genuine devotion. Uddhava was confused: “The material body is dull, while the spirit soul is full of knowledge, so who actually experiences material existence?” Krishna explained that when the soul falsely identifies with the body, this material consciousness manifests, although it is actually like a dream state. Jnana-yoga assists one in distinguishing the spiritual from the material, the eternal from the temporary, and true happiness from fleeting sense enjoyment. Such clarity is required to remain steady and focused on the journey to purity. Krishna then described the yoga practice, which can afford one psychophysical benefits and mystic perfections. After hearing these descriptions, Uddhava requested Krishna to give a conclusive answer on the most effective means of perfection. Krishna again highlighted the supremacy of bhakti-yoga: “Always remembering Me, one should perform all his duties for Me without becoming impetuous. With mind and intelligence offered to Me, one should fix his mind in attraction to My devotional service.” He went on to describe the activities and consciousness of a bhakti-yogi . Krishna then instructed Uddhava to renounce the world and travel to Badarikasrama. The thought of separation overwhelmed Uddhava, who was in tears, but he installed the Lord within his heart and dutifully departed.

Before and After the Uddhava-Gita

U - Uddhava-gita (7-29) Deity Worship and Bhakti-Yoga Before and After the Uddhava-Gita The events preceeding the Uddhava-gita and the subsequent history involving Maitreya and Vidura, are described in several sections of the Srimad-Bhagavatam. After the demigods profusely thanked Krishna for fulfilling His mission on earth, they invited Him to depart. First, Krishna arranged for the Yadu dynasty to be cursed, knowing that only by His arrangement could they be removed from the world. When Uddhava, Krishna’s cousin and dear associate, understood these plans, he requested to depart the world with his Lord. Krishna, however, encouraged Uddhava to prepare for sannyasa , and instructed him in transcendental knowledge (Uddhava-gita), the longest philosophical section in the entire Srimad-Bhagavatam. During His 125 years on Earth, Krishna visited Vrindavana, Mathura, Dwaraka, Hastinapura, other planetary systems, and even Maha Vaikunthaloka. The Lord had not, however, visited Badarikasrama where Nara-Narayana Rishis and the sages were eagerly waiting for Him. Thus, after imparting the knowledge, Krishna instructed Uddhava to travel to Badarikasrama and share the wisdom with them. Uddhava honoured Krishna’s wish and travelled to the North. While Uddhava was en route to Badarikasrama he heard about the Lord’s journey to Prabhasa. Turning back and following Lord Krishna from behind, he saw the Lord alone just after the withdrawal of the Yadu dynasty. The Lord then revealed further knowledge of Himself. It was at this time that Maitreya was present and heard those conversations. [ 37 ] After enlightening Uddhava, Krishna requested them both to leave; Uddhava to Badarikasrama and Maitreya to Haridwar. On his way to Badarikasrama, Uddhava halted in Vrindavana and on the banks of the Yamuna he met Vidura. Their conversation ( Canto Three, Chapters 1 - 4 ) revolved around many of Krishna’s pastimes. Vidura was hungry to know more about Krishna’s final instructions, and Uddhava thus directed him to meet Maitreya in Haridwar, since the Rishi had heard the very same instructions. Uddhava then continued to Badarikasrama, while Vidura and Maitreya met in Haridwar and had an enlightening conversation ( Canto Three, Chapter 5 onwards).

Essential Similarities

U - Uddhava-gita (7-29) Deity Worship and Bhakti-Yoga Essential Similarities When we examine the Uddhava-gita and Bhagavad-gita, we clearly see that Krishna was teaching the same essential principles in both discourses. Here are some examples: 1) Comprehensiveness of the Knowledge: Bhagavad-gita 7.2: “I shall now declare unto you in full this knowledge, both phenomenal and numinous. This being known, nothing further shall remain for you to know.” Srimad-Bhagavatam 11.29.32: “When an inquisitive person comes to understand this knowledge, he has nothing further to know. After all, one who has drunk the most palatable nectar cannot remain thirsty.” 2) Studying the Conversation: Bhagavad-gita 18.70: “And I declare that he who studies this sacred conversation of ours worships Me by his intelligence.” Srimad-Bhagavatam 11.29.27-28: “He who loudly recites this supreme knowledge, which is the most lucid and purifying, becomes purified day by day, for he reveals Me to others with the lamp of transcendental knowledge. Anyone who regularly listens to this knowledge with faith and attention, all the while engaging in My pure devotional service, will never become bound by the reactions of material work.” 3) Sharing the Wisdom: Bhagavad-gita 18.68-69: “For one who explains this supreme secret to the devotees, pure devotional service is guaranteed, and at the end he will come back to Me. There is no servant in this world more dear to Me than he, nor will there ever be one more dear.” Srimad-Bhagavatam 11.29.26: “One who liberally disseminates this knowledge among My devotees is the bestower of the Absolute Truth, and to him I give My very own self.” 4) Concluding Words: Bhagavad-gita 18.65 - 66 : “Always think of Me, become My devotee, worship Me and offer your homage unto Me. Thus you will come to Me without fail. I promise you this because you are My very dear friend. Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me. I shall deliver you from all sinful reactions. Do not fear.” Srimad-Bhagavatam 11.29.34: “A person who gives up all fruitive activities and offers himself entirely unto Me, eagerly desiring to render service unto Me, achieves liberation from birth and death and is promoted to the status of sharing My own opulences.” 5) Qualification to Understand: Bhagavad-gita 18.67: “This confidential knowledge may never be explained to those who are not austere, or devoted, or engaged in devotional service, nor to one who is envious of Me.” Srimad-Bhagavatam 11.29.30: “You should not share this instruction with anyone who is hypocritical, atheistic or dishonest, or with anyone who will not listen faithfully, who is not a devotee, or who is simply not humble.” 6) Effect on Listener: Bhagavad-gita 18.72 - 73 : Krishna: “O son of Prtha, O conqueror of wealth, have you heard this with an attentive mind? And are your ignorance and illusions now dispelled?” Arjuna: “My dear Krishna, O infallible one, my illusion is now gone. I have regained my memory by Your mercy. I am now firm and free from doubt and am prepared to act according to Your instructions.” Srimad-Bhagavatam 11.29.29 / 37 : Krishna: “My dear friend Uddhava, have you now completely understood this transcendental knowledge? Are the confusion and lamentation that arose in your mind now dispelled?” Uddhava: “O unborn, primeval Lord, although I had fallen into the great darkness of illusion, my ignorance has now been dispelled by Your merciful association. Indeed, how can cold, darkness and fear exert their power over one who has approached the brilliant sun?”

Uddhava-Gita

U - Uddhava-gita (7-29) Deity Worship and Bhakti-Yoga Uddhava-Gita “The word sampatitam indicates that the falldown of the living entity is complete. In other words, he cannot get up again. Sri Uddhava therefore appeals to the Lord to be kind to these poor fallen souls, humbly represented by his own self. If one receives the Lord’s mercy, then even without any further qualification one can go back home, back to Godhead; and without the mercy of Lord Krishna, the most learned, austere, powerful, wealthy or beautiful man will be pathetically crushed by the material world’s machinery of illusion. The Supreme Personality of Godhead, as described here, is mahanubhava , or the greatest, most powerful and most merciful personality, whose influence extends everywhere. The Lord’s mercy is manifest in the form of His nectarean instructions such as Bhagavad-gita and the Uddhava-gita, being spoken here.” (11.19.10) The Uddhava-gita is an expansion of the Bhagavad-gita. Srila Prabhupada explains: “Undoubtedly, the Bhagavad-gita was spoken by the Lord on the Battlefield of Kuruksetra just to encourage Arjuna to fight, and yet to complete the transcendental knowledge of Bhagavad-gita, the Lord instructed Uddhava. The Lord wanted Uddhava to fulfill His mission and disseminate knowledge which He had not spoken even in Bhagavad-gita.” (SB 3.4.32)

Entanglement, Liberation and Pure Love

U - Uddhava-gita (7-29) Entanglement, Liberation and Pure Love Chapter 10, 11, 12 Sukadeva Goswami continued narrating the instructions of Krishna to Uddhava. All forms of material enjoyment, even to the point of heavenly pleasures, are limited, temporary and full of duality. In the futile pursuit of such experiences, one degrades himself more and more. The entangled spirit soul begins the journey ‘back to purity’ after receiving transcendental knowledge from a spiritual master. By cultivating the mood and qualities of a true disciple, following transcendental instructions and engaging one’s propensities within the Varnasrama system, one gains release from material entanglement. Like two birds in a tree, the Lord and living entity reside within the body. The Lord is eternally liberated, sitting as an observer, while the conditioned soul perpetually tries to enjoy the fruits of the tree. When the soul is awakened to real knowledge he becomes liberated, and even though residing within the body, becomes completely detached from the enjoying spirit, never considering himself the ‘doer.’ The ultimate purpose of material detachment and Vedic study is to usher one into a loving relationship with the Lord. Such connection with the Lord, and the subsequent practice of devotional activities, causes numerous saintly qualities to manifest in one’s character. The most essential quality is surrender to Krishna since, it triggers all subsequent qualities to automatically appear. In conclusion, Krishna glorified the Vrindavana gopis , whose standard of love is beyond compare. Their deep attachment meant that every moment was spent in consciousness of Krishna. More important than gaining volumes of knowledge, Krishna explained, is to follow in their footsteps and develop a similar intensity of surrender and devotion.

Knowledge to Bhakti

U - Uddhava-gita (7-29) Knowledge to Bhakti Chapter 19, 20, 21 Transcendental knowledge of the Lord should translate into an awakening of pure bhakti . All regulations, duties and recommendations of sastra are meant to bring one to this spontaneous devotion. After Uddhava asked a range of wonderful questions, Krishna, amongst other things, described the character of a self-realised soul and the deeper meaning of being tolerant, charitable, austere, heroic and truthful. He explained the real substance of happiness in life and who is actually a genuine friend. Though unalloyed bhakti is the ultimate goal, scriptures may promote various practices of study, austerity and fruitive work in a bid to gradually elevate the religious practitioner to a higher level of purity. Human birth on the earthly planets is the most wondrous gift, since it affords the soul the best opportunity to perfect life and escape material entanglement. Thus, by good fortune, if one begins the path of bhakti and attains the platform of pure devotion, relative considerations of purity and impurity no longer affect them. Such persons transcend good and bad karma.

Pururava – Aila-Gita

U - Uddhava-gita (7-29) Pururava – Aila-Gita Chapter 26 Krishna recounted the history of Emperor Pururava, also known as Aila, who was attracted by the heavenly damsel, Urvasi. [ 36 ] After marrying her and later being separated, he was devastated, but eventually developed a deep spirit of renunciation. He expressed his innermost feelings in a song known as the Aila-gita: Absorbed in sense gratification, one becomes oblivious to the passing of time, neglecting the real purpose of life. Of material pleasures, sexual attraction is overwhelmingly strong, able to trap even the most powerful personalities in a web of illusion. Lust is ever-demanding and never satiated, and only one awakened by spiritual knowledge can break free. Though the body is temporary machinery, it’s packaged in such a way as to attract the mind. Thus, one must be constantly vigilant, avoid material enjoyers, and instead find the saintly souls who can cut such dangerous attachments of the mind with their sharpened words of wisdom. Freed from his material illusion, the Emperor attained perfect realisation of the Supreme Lord.

Topmost Yoga System

U - Uddhava-gita (7-29) Topmost Yoga System Chapter 13, 14, 15, 16 Krishna stressed the necessity of developing the mode of goodness ( sattva ) in one’s mindset, lifestyle and habits, and then eventually transcending it through devotion. Fascinated, Uddhava asked the Lord to repeat the instructions He had previously imparted regarding this. Once, when Brahma was questioned by his sons, headed by Sanaka, about overcoming desires for sense gratification, the engineer of the universe felt incapable of answering and turned to the Lord for assistance. Appearing in the form of a swan ( Hamsa-avatara ), the Lord explained the nature of the mind. Not only is the mind drawn towards sense objects, but sense objects enter within the mind. Only by fixing the mind on the Lord, can one escape its devious influence. When we see the material energy independently of Krishna, it is likened to a dream state. For such persons, whether in wakefulness, sleep or deep sleep, all three are illusory since their grasp of reality is fundamentally flawed. Krishna reassured Uddhava that even if one is unable to give up sense gratification, the power of devotional service will eventually elevate them to the perfectional stage. With a vigilant eye, one should guard against the temptations of sense gratification, and learn to practice with the heart. When Uddhava desired clarification on which yoga system is most evolved, Krishna described the various mystic perfections (eight primary and ten secondary) and the processes to obtain them. The Lord then emphasised that practice of devotional service ( bhakti-yoga ) bears all these fruits, and most importantly connects one to the Supreme Person in a very intimate way. The Lord becomes conquered by pure devotion. Just as Krishna described His opulences to Arjuna in the Bhagavad-gita, Krishna explained to Uddhava how He is the essence of everything found in the world.

Twenty-Four Gurus

U - Uddhava-gita (7-29) Twenty-Four Gurus Chapter 7, 8, 9 Sukadeva Goswami continued narrating the conversation between Krishna and Uddhava. Krishna confirmed He was indeed leaving the world. He urged Uddhava to embrace sannyasa and plan his departure too, since Kali-yuga would soon begin. Uddhava, feeling himself lowly and unqualified, requested an injection of transcendental knowledge to awaken his natural detachment. Krishna first explained how an intelligent person can observe the world around them and decipher powerful lessons to elevate their consciousness. To illustrate this, He narrated the story of an avadhuta brahmana who was wandering carefree in deep spiritual ecstasy. When Maharaja Yadu questioned him on how he attained such an enlightened state, the brahmana replied by delineating the 24 gurus through whom he received profound spiritual instruction. Some key lessons from these gurus are below (not an exhaustive analysis): • Earth: One should remain undisturbed by aggressors and instead be absorbed in selfless service to others. • Air: Though surrounded by material objects, and situated within a material body, one must learn to remain aloof and untouched. • Sky: The individual soul and Supersoul never mix with anything nor can be divided by anything. • Water: Saintly persons are purifying and pleasing, constantly moving and enlightening others with the beautiful sound of their words. • Fire: One should absorb things and yet remain untained by them – saintly persons, for example, can incinerate the karmic reactions of their followers and remain unaffected. • Moon: Apparent changes in the body do not affect the soul, which remains constant and unchanged. • Sun: One should accept material objects and then utilise them at the appropriate time, remaining unsullied in the process. • Pigeon: One must be careful of excessive affection and attachment, which inevitably causes suffering. • Python: One should avoid excessive endeavours for material preservation, and instead remain focused on one’s real spiritual self-interest. • Ocean: Regardless of success or failure, prosperity or struggle, one must remain steady and serene. • Moth: One must not fall prey to the allurement of sense objects, of which attraction to the opposite sex is foremost. • Honeybee: One must guard against greed and over-consumption, only accepting what is required for his daily maintenance. • Elephant: One should carefully avoid exploiting and enjoying the opposite sex, lest they create more complexities for themselves. • Honey Thief: If one acquires wealth and greedily stores it, he will inevitably be plundered. • Deer: Saintly renunciates should avoid mundane entertainment in the form of singing, dance or music. • Fish: Failing to control the urges of the tongue will likely cause one’s spiritual downfall. • Pingala: Having unsuccessfully tried to enjoy the material world, one should develop detachment from the illusory pursuits of material family, friendship and love. • Kurara Bird: By renouncing attachment and possessiveness, one experiences spiritual happiness. • Child: One who gives up concerns of home, children and reputation can wander freely without any anxiety. • Young Girl and Bracelets: When people live communally there is inevitably conflict, disagreement and frivolous conversation. • Arrow Maker: Through yoga practice, one must steady the mind and focus it on the Supreme Lord without deviation. • Snake: One should avoid making complicated practical arrangements, and rather accept a simple lifestyle for maintenance of the body. • Spider: The Lord utilises His energies to create the cosmic manifestation, which eventually reenters within Himself again. • Wasp: Whatever one constantly meditates on, that he will surely become.

Understanding Material Nature

U - Uddhava-gita (7-29) Understanding Material Nature Chapter 22, 24, 25 Material nature ( prakrti ), which is constituted of different material elements, is impregnated by the glance of the Supreme ( purusa ). These material elements are analysed and quantified by different philosophers in different ways, since various elements evolve from each other and are closely related. When the living entity harbours material desires, he becomes entangled in the cycle of samsara , entering various gross bodies according to the different modes of material nature. The mind accompanies the soul through its material sojourn. A wise person disassociates himself from material nature, which is full of frustration, and thus remains on the safe, spiritual platform. The Avanti brahmana is a prime example (narrated in next section). Sankhya philosophy delineates the evolution of various material elements. After they are manifested, secondary creation is overseen by Brahma, who is born upon a lotus stem. Various planetary realms are created for living entities possessing different karmic configurations. The philosophy of sankhya is ultimately aimed at helping one develop a sense of detachment, seeing that material nature is real, but temporary. All elements eventually merge back into each other, and then ultimately into the body of the Lord. The modes of nature, each with their unique characteristics, pervade every aspect of the material reality. When a particular mode defeats the others, there are clear, observable symptoms. Krishna goes on to describe the activities, knowledge, environment, approach to work, faith, food, happiness and final destination of those in different modes. The ultimate way to transcend such material influence is through the practice of devotional service.

Varnasrama

U - Uddhava-gita (7-29) Varnasrama Chapter 17, 18 Satya-yuga was populated with one class of spotless individuals, known as hamsa , but after the cosmic cycle entered Treta-yuga, the system of Varnasrama was introduced. Each division of occupation ( varna ) and order of life ( asrama ) has its unique role and responsibility, and specific character traits which identify it. In summary, Krishna concluded: “The main religious duties of a sannyasi are equanimity and nonviolence, whereas for the vanaprastha austerity and philosophical understanding of the difference between the body and soul are prominent. The main duties of a householder are to give shelter to all living entities and perform sacrifices, and the brahmacari is mainly engaged in serving the spiritual master.” Beyond all such divisions is the paramahamsa , who has purified the heart and is intimately connected with the Lord.

Śrī Uddhava said: My dear Lord, You are beginningless and endless, the Absolute Truth Himself, unlimited by anything else. You are the protector and life-giver, the destruction and creation of all things that exist.

Brahma means the greatest of all and the cause of everything. Uddhava here addresses the Lord as the paramam, or supreme brahma, because in His feature as Bhagavān the Lord is the highest feature of the Absolute Truth and the shelter of unlimited spiritual opulences. Unlike those of ordinary living entities, the Lord’s opulences cannot be restricted by time, and thus the Lord is anādy-antam, without beginning or end, and apāvṛtam, unhindered by any superior or equal potency. The opulence of the material world is also resting within the Lord, who alone can protect, maintain, create and destroy the material world. In this chapter, Śrī Uddhava inquires from the Lord about His spiritual and material opulences in order to refine his appreciation of the Lord’s position as the Absolute Truth. Even Lord Viṣṇu, the ultimate creator of the material world, is an expansion of Lord Kṛṣṇa, and thus Śrī Uddhava wishes to fully appreciate the unique status of his personal friend.

Uddhava said: You are without beginning or end, superior to Brahman. You are Svayam Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa, unlimited by anything. You are the protection from danger, the giver of maintenance, the destroyer and the creator. The Sixteenth Chapter describes those objects called vibhūtis because of their influence, knowledge or energy. The Lord said in the previous chapter: sarvāsām api siddhīnāṁ hetuḥ patir ahaṁ prabhuḥ ahaṁ yogasya sāṅkhyasya dharmasya brahma-vādinām I am the cause, the protector and the master of all siddhis, of the yoga system, of jṣāna, dharma, and of the searchers for Brahman. SB 11.15.3 Thus all powers arise from the Lord. Having heard that, Uddhava became curious about the various material and spiritual places where the Lord exhibits his powers. He first explains how the Lord is the shelter of everything. You are superior to Brahman because you are Bhagavān. And you, Kṛṣṇa, are Svayam Bhagavān (sākṣāt). Though you have a limited human form as Kṛṣṇa, you pervade all time and space, being without beginning or end and unrestrained by anything. Viṣṇu, the creator, maintainer and destroyer of the universe, is your aṁśa. Thus it can be said that you are the protection from disaster, the maintainer of life, the destruction and creation for all beings in existence.

My dear Lord, although it is difficult for the impious to understand that You are situated in all superior and inferior creations, those brāhmaṇas who are actual knowers of the Vedic conclusion worship You in truth.

The behavior of saintly persons is also to be taken as evidence, and therefore it is here stated that although ignorant, impious persons are bewildered before the Lord’s all-pervading feature, those with purified, clear consciousness worship the Lord as He is. In this chapter Śrī Uddhava inquires about the Lord’s opulences, and here the words uccāvaceṣu bhūteṣu (“within superior and inferior creations”) clearly refer to the Lord’s external opulences, those manifested in the material world. The saintly brāhmaṇas, or Vaiṣṇavas, worship Lord Kṛṣṇa within all things and yet recognize the variety in the Lord’s creation. For example, in worshiping the Deity, the devotees will select the nicest flowers, fruits and ornaments for decorating the transcendental form of the Lord. Similarly, although the Lord is present in the heart of every conditioned soul, the devotee will give more attention to a conditioned soul interested in the message of Lord Kṛṣṇa. Although the Lord is everywhere, the devotees make distinctions, for the sake of the Lord’s service, between His presence in superior ( ucca ) and inferior ( avaceṣu ) creations.

Please tell me of the perfections that great sages achieve by worshiping You with devotion. Also, kindly explain which of Your different forms they worship.

Śrī Uddhava here inquires about the spiritual opulences of the Lord, which consist primarily of His viṣṇu-tattva expansions such as Vāsudeva, Saṅkarṣaṇa, Pradyumna and Aniruddha. By worshiping different plenary expansions of the Lord one achieves particular perfections, and Śrī Uddhava wants to know about this.

Please tell me the various forms in which the greatest sages worship you with devotion and attain perfection. Uddhava asks about the Lord’s vibhūtis in order to carry out worship of the Lord more effectively than worshipping everywhere. By this, the great sags attain perfection.

O my Lord, maintainer of all, although You are the Supersoul of the living entities, You remain hidden. Thus being bewildered by You, the living entities cannot see You, although You are seeing them.

The Lord exists as the Supersoul within everything. He also appears in various incarnations or sometimes empowers a devotee to act as an incarnation. All such forms of the Lord are unknown to the nondevotees. The bewildered conditioned souls think that the supreme enjoyer, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, is actually meant to be enjoyed by them for their sense gratification. Praying to God for specific material benedictions and assuming God’s creation to be their personal property, the nondevotees cannot understand the actual form of the Lord. They therefore remain foolish and bewildered. Within the universe everything is subject to creation, maintenance and destruction, and thus the Supersoul is the only actual controller in the material world. Unfortunately, when the Supersoul appears in various incarnations to clarify His position, ignorant persons think that the Supersoul is merely another creation of the modes of material nature. As stated in this verse, they cannot see that person who is actually seeing them, and simply remain bewildered.

Translation
O maintainer of all beings! Although you are the antaryāmī of the living entities and the benefactor of all beings, you move about hidden from them. Thus being bewildered by you, the living entities cannot see you, although you are seeing them. The Lord is not understood. Though you are the antaryāmī of all beings, and though you are give benefit to all beings (bhūta-bhāvanaḥ), you are hidden from all beings. Thus they do not see you. Another version has bhūta-bhāvana, in the vocative.

O supremely potent Lord, please explain to me Your innumerable potencies, which You manifest on the earth, in heaven, in hell and indeed in all directions. I offer my humble obeisances at Your lotus feet, which are the shelter of all holy places.

Uddhava here inquires about the Lord’s material and spiritual potencies, as manifested within our universe. Just as ordinary animals or insects living in human cities cannot appreciate the scientific, cultural or military achievements of man, similarly, foolish materialists cannot appreciate the mighty opulences of the Personality of Godhead, even those manifested within our universe. For the appreciation of ordinary human beings Uddhava requests the Lord to reveal exactly how and in what forms He expands His potencies. As already explained, the Lord is the essential ingredient of all that exists, and thus any mighty or opulent manifestation must ultimately rest on the Lord Himself.

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda

I offer my humble obeisances at your lotus feet, which are the shelter of all holy places. Therefore you yourself should reveal your hidden vibhūtis. These vibhūtis are made realizable by you. Please explain them and make me realize them. Spiritual portions of the Lord who is fully spiritual are called aṁśas. Those portions which are material are called vibhūtis. That is the usual meaning. Here however, the word vibhūti refers to both spiritual and material powers. It will be seen in the text that the best of all material and spiritual things will be described.

On the Battlefield of Kurukṣetra Arjuna thought that killing his relatives would be an abominable, irreligious activity, motivated only by his desire to acquire a kingdom. He therefore desisted from the battle, thinking, “I would be the killer of my relatives. They would be destroyed.” Thus Arjuna was afflicted with mundane consciousness.

Lord Kṛṣṇa here explains to Uddhava the circumstances in which Śrī Arjuna posed his questions.

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Arjuna, knowing that killing his relatives to acquire a kingdom was an abominable, irreligious activity, desisted from the battle, thinking, “I will be the killer of my relatives and they will be killed.” Thus Arjuna was afflicted with material consciousness. How did Arjuna, desiring to fight, ask this question about vibhūtis? He gave up the battle, knowing it was against dharma to kill relatives for gaining a kingdom. He took on the mood of a material person and thought “I will be the killer and they will be killed.”

My dear Uddhava, I am the Supersoul of all living entities, and therefore I am naturally their well-wisher and supreme controller. Being the creator, maintainer and annihilator of all entities, I am not different from them.

Śrīla Śrīdhara Svāmī points out that the Personality of Godhead maintains an ablative and genitive relationship with His opulences. In other words, the Lord is not different from all living entities, because they are coming from Him and they belong to Him. The Lord gave a similar explanation to Arjuna in the Tenth Chapter of Bhagavad-gītā (10.20) , beginning with the same words, aham ātmā. Although the Lord describes His external, or material, opulences, the Lord’s position is always transcendental and nonmaterial. Just as the living soul within the body gives life to the body, similarly, the Lord, by His supreme potency, gives life to all universal opulences.

Translation
I am the result of all those seeking results, and I am time among controllers. I am prakṛti for the guṇas, and I am the natural quality in an object having qualities. Now he describes the particular vibhūtis. As vibhūtis, he describes the outstanding among material and spiritual objects. The genitive case is sometimes used to indicate that the Lord is the best among a group (eg. I am time among controllers) and sometimes used to indicate a relationship of possession (eg. I am the result for the karmīs and jṣānīs). The word” I” is used with the vibhūtis in nominative or accusative case to indicate sameness or identity. I am the result to be achieved (gatiḥ) for persons having goals like karmīs and jṣānīs. I am time among things that control. I am prakṛti (sāmyam) among the guṇas. I am the natural quality in a substance. For instance, I am sound in ether.

Among the eight progressive states of yoga I am the final stage, samādhi, in which the soul is completely separated from illusion. Among those desiring victory I am prudent political counsel, and among processes of expert discrimination I am the science of the soul, by which one distinguishes spirit from matter. Among all speculative philosophers I am diversity of perception.

Any science is based on the faculty of expert discrimination. By skillful definition of isolated and interactive components one becomes expert in any field. Ultimately the most intelligent person can isolate the spirit soul from matter and describe the properties of matter and spirit as both isolated and interactive components of reality. The proliferation of innumerable philosophical speculations is due to differing modes of perception within the material world. As stated in Bhagavad-gītā (15.15) , sarvasya cāhaṁ hṛdi sanniviṣṭo mattaḥ smṛtir jṣānam apohanaṁ ca: the Supreme Personality of Godhead is situated in everyone’s heart and awards a particular degree of knowledge or ignorance according to one’s desire and merit. Thus the Lord Himself is the basis of the mundane process of philosophical speculation, for He creates differing and alternating modes of perception within the conditioned souls. It is to be understood that one can acquire perfect knowledge only by hearing directly from Lord Kṛṣṇa and not by hearing from conditioned philosophers who imperfectly perceive the creation of the Lord through the screen of their personal desires.

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Among the eight aṅgas of yoga, I am the final stage, samādhi. Among those desiring victory, I am counsel advocating war, and among processes of expert discrimination, I am the distinction of ātmā from non-ātmā. Among all speculative philosophers, I am diversity of views. Among the aṅgas of yoga I am samādhi (ātmā-saṁrodhaḥ). Among those desiring victory, I am counsel which provokes war. Among those skilful in discrimination, I am the knowledge of distinguishing ātmā from non-ātmā. There are different philosophies: ātma-khyātir asat-khyātir akhyātiḥ khyatir anyathā | tathā nirvacana-khyātir ity etat khyāti-paṣcakam | vijṣāna-śūnya-mīmāṁsā-tarkādvaita-vidāṁ matam || There are five philosophies propounding ātmā-khyāti, asat-khyāti, akhyāti, anyathā-khyāti, and nirvacana-khyāti found in followers of vijṣana, śūnyavada, Mīmāṁsa, logic and advaita-vāda. I am the endless diversity among these five philosophies.

Among religious principles I am renunciation, and of all types of security I am consciousness of the eternal soul within. Of secrets I am pleasant speech and silence, and among sexual pairs I am Brahmā.

One who realizes the eternal soul within no longer fears any material situation and thus is qualified to accept the renounced order of life, sannyāsa. Certainly fear is one of the great miseries of material life; therefore the gift of fearlessness is very valuable and represents Lord Kṛṣṇa. Both in ordinary pleasant speech and silence, very few confidential things are revealed, and thus diplomacy and silence are both aids to secrecy. Lord Brahmā is prominent among sexual pairs because the original beautiful couple, Svāyambhuva Manu and Śatarūpā, emerged from Lord Brahmā’s body, as explained in Chapter Twelve of the Third Canto of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam.

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Among religious principles, I am renunciation, and of all types of security, I am consciousness of the eternal soul within. For maintaining secrets, I am pleasant speech and silence, and for couples indulging in sex, I am Brahmā. There are various dharmas like sannyāsa, detachment and charity. I am sannyāsa. I am inward steadiness (abahir-matiḥ). Among secrets I am pleasing words (sunṛtam) and silence. These two do not reveal the mind of a person. This means they are most secretive. I am Prajāpati, from whose bodily halves sex arose. He is the chief couple. Śruti says ardho ha vā eṣa ātmano yat patnī: half of his self is his wife. (Baudāyana Śrauta-sūtra 29.9.381.2)

Among those entitled to the name Bhagavān I am Vāsudeva, and indeed, you, Uddhava, represent Me among the devotees. I am Hanumān among the Kimpuruṣas, and among the Vidyādharas I am Sudarśana.

The Vedic literatures state that one who possesses perfect knowledge of the creation and destruction of all entities and who is completely situated in omniscience is to be known as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Bhagavān. Although many great personalities are sometimes called Bhagavān, ultimately Bhagavān is the one supreme entity who possesses unlimited opulences. Throughout history, many important personalities have been addressed as “lord,” but ultimately there is only one Supreme Lord. In the Lord’s catur-vyūha, or quadruple expansion, the first manifestation is Vāsudeva, who here represents all of the Lord’s expansions in the viṣṇu-tattva category.

Among jewels I am the ruby, and among beautiful things I am the lotus cup. Among all types of grass I am the sacred kuśa, and of oblations I am ghee and other ingredients obtained from the cow.

Paṣca-gavya refers to five sacrificial ingredients obtained from the cow, namely milk, ghee, yogurt, dung and urine. The cow is so valuable that even its dung and urine are antiseptic and fit for sacrificial offering. Kuśa grass is also used for religious occasions. Mahārāja Parīkṣit constructed a sitting place from kuśa grass during the last week of his life. Among beautiful things the lotus cup formed by lotus petals represents Lord Kṛṣṇa, and among jewels the ruby, which is similar to Lord Kṛṣṇa’s own Kaustubha gem, symbolizes the potency of the Lord.

Of the powerful I am bodily and mental strength, and I am the devotional activities of My devotees. My devotees worship Me in nine different forms, among which I am the original and primary Vāsudeva.

Generally, the Vaiṣṇavas worship the Personality of Godhead as Vāsudeva, Saṅkarṣaṇa, Pradyumna, Aniruddha, Nārāyaṇa, Hayagrīva, Varāha, Nṛsiṁha and Brahmā. It is understood that when a suitable living entity is not available to fill the post of Brahmā, the Lord Himself assumes the position; therefore Lord Brahmā is mentioned in the list. Lord Viṣṇu sometimes appears as Indra and sometimes as Brahmā, and it is Viṣṇu appearing as Brahmā who is indicated in this connection.

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Know that of the powerful, I am strength of the senses and mind, and I am the devotional activities of my devotees. My devotees worship me in nine different forms, among which I am the principal form Vāsudeva. Among the strong, I am mental (sahaḥ) and sensual strength (ojaḥ). I am actions like hearing and chanting of the devotees (sātvatām). Among the nine forms that they worship—Vāsudeva, Saṅkarṣaṇa, Pradyumna, Aniruddha, Nārāyaṇa, Hayagrīva, Varāha, Nṛsiṁha, and Brahmā--I am the principal form Vāsudeva. Just as Viṣṇu sometimes becomes Indra as in Svāyambhuva-mantantara, when Yajṣa became Indra, so in some mahā-kalpas, Viṣṇu becomes Brahmā. The Brahmā mentioned among the nine is a form of Viṣṇu as Brahmā.

Translation
I am the functions of the ten senses: walking, speaking, evacuation, accepting and pleasure, touching, seeing, tasting, and hearing. I am also the potency by which each of the senses experiences its particular sense object. The first five actions belong to the working senses. The second five actions belong to the knowledge senses. Lakṣaṇam means seeing. I am the senses’ power of perceiving their sense objects. Śruti says cakṣuṣaś cakṣuḥ: I am the power of seeing in the eye. (Bṛhad-āraṇyaka Upaniṣad 4.4.18)

I am form, taste, aroma, touch and sound; false ego; the mahat-tattva; earth, water, fire, air and sky; the living entity; material nature; the modes of goodness, passion and ignorance; and the transcendental Lord. All these items, along with knowledge of their individual symptoms and the steady conviction that results from this knowledge, represent Me.

Having given a brief but detailed synopsis of His personal opulences within this world, the Lord now briefly summarizes the opulences that expand from His bodily effulgence. It is stated in Brahma-saṁhitā that all of the material universes with their infinite varieties, transformations and opulences rest on the bodily effulgence of the Lord. Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī has elaborately explained this point in his commentary on this verse.

Translation
I am form, taste, aroma, touch and sound; ahaṅkāra; the mahat-tattva; earth, water, fire, air and sky; the eleven senses; the living entity; prakṛti; the modes of goodness, passion and ignorance; and Brahman. I am all of these items, along with knowledge of them, and the determination of truth resulting from that knowledge. Having indicated vibhūtis by showing the best of a group or the key element in a relationship, again the Lord describes them all in general, in two and half verses. The list of elements indicates the tan-mātras. Aham is ahaṅkāra. Mahān is mahat-tattva. These seven are the modifications of prakṛti. The transformation (vikāraḥ) refers to the five gross elements and the eleven senses. This makes sixteen. Puruṣaḥ refers to the jīva. Avyaktam is prakṛti. The total is now twenty-five elements. It is said: mūla-prakṛtir avikṛtir mahad-ādyāḥ prakṛti-vikṛtayaḥ sapta | ṣoḍaśakaś ca vikāro na prakṛtir na vikṛtiḥ puruṣaḥ || Mūla-prakṛti is unchanged. Transformations of prakṛti are seven (mahat-tattva, ahaṅkāra and five tan-mātras), which further transform into sixteen (five gross elements and eleven senses). Prakṛti remains separate and puruṣa do not transform. Sāṅkhya-kārikā by Īśvara-kṛṣṇa I am also the guṇas of prakṛti known as rajas, tamas and sattva and I am Brahman (param). I am everything. I am the knowledge of these enumerated elements and the result, determination of truth.

As the Supreme Lord I am the basis of the living entity, of the modes of nature and of the mahat-tattva. Thus I am everything, and nothing whatsoever can exist without Me.

Without the manifestation of the mahat-tattva, or total material existence, and the jīva, or living entity, nothing can exist within the material world. Everything we experience is a combination of the living entity and matter, in its various subtle and gross categories. The Supreme Personality of Godhead is the entire basis of the existence of both the living entity and matter. Nothing can possibly exist even for a moment without the mercy of the Supreme Lord. One should not foolishly conclude that the Lord is therefore material. As has been clearly explained in this canto of the Bhāgavatam, both the living entity and the Supreme Lord are completely transcendental to material nature. The living entity, however, has the propensity to dream that he is material, whereas the Lord constantly remembers the transcendental position of both Himself and the conditioned dreaming entity. As the Lord is transcendental, His abode is also far beyond the reach of the modes of nature. The actual purpose of life is to understand by mature conviction the transcendental Lord, His transcendental abode, our own transcendental position and the process by which we may go back home, back to Godhead.

Translation
Without the Lord and the jīva there is no spiritual existence. Without the guṇas and their causes, there is no material existence. With the totality of jīvas and individual jīvas and their coverings there is no combination of matter and spirit. Without me, nothing exists. The meaning of the previous verse is particularized and summarized. Without the Lord and the jīva, there is no conscious existence. Without the guṇas and their causes—mahat-tattva and prakṛti, there is no material existence. Without individual and collective jīvas (sarvātmanā) and all the individual coverings (sarvena) there is no combination of jīvas with prakṛti. Without me (māyā), all of this does not exist. Thus I am everything.

Even though over a period of time I might count all the atoms of the universe, I could not count all of My opulences which I manifest within innumerable universes.

The Lord here explains that Uddhava should not expect a complete catalog of the Lord’s opulences, since even the Lord Himself finds no limit to such opulences. According to Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī, kālena indicates that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is within every atom and can therefore easily calculate the total number of atoms. However, although the Lord is certainly omniscient, even He Himself cannot supply a finite number for His opulences, because they are infinite.

As you did previously, please speak by showing the best of a group or the key element in a relationship.” I could after a great deal of time count all the atoms of earth or other elements and tell you. But I cannot say this about my vibhūtis. Why? When one cannot count the universes which are created, how can one count the vibhūtis within the universes?

I have briefly described to you all My spiritual opulences and also the extraordinary material features of My creation, which are perceived by the mind and defined in different ways according to circumstances.

According to Sanskrit grammar, and as confirmed by Śrīla Śrīdhara Svāmī, the words etāḥ and ete describe two distinct sets of the Lord’s opulences. The Lord has described His opulent plenary expansions, such as Vāsudeva, Nārāyaṇa, the Supersoul, etc., and further the Lord has described the outstanding features of the material creation, which are also included among the glories of the Personality of Godhead. The plenary manifestations of the Lord, such as Vāsudeva, Nārāyaṇa, etc., are all eternal, unchanging transcendental features of the Lord and are indicated by the term etāḥ. The extraordinary aspects of material creation, however, are circumstantial and dependent on individual perception, and they are therefore described here by the words mano-vikārā evaite yathā vācābhidhīyate. Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī explains that by consistent logical application of synonyms, etāḥ refers to the Lord’s eternal spiritual manifestations, beyond the perception of the material senses, whereas ete refers to those opulences that can be perceived by conditioned souls. He gives the example that the paraphernalia and intimate associates of a king are all considered to be part and parcel of the king and are therefore granted royal status. Similarly, the opulent features of material creation are reflected expansions of the Lord’s personal opulences and thus may be considered nondifferent from Him. One should not, however, wrongly assume that such insignificant material opulences occupy the same status as the Lord’s plenary features as the Personality of Godhead, which are qualitatively and quantitatively equal to the Lord.

Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura comments as follows on this verse. “The Lord’s external opulences are called mano-vikārāḥ, or ‘related to mental transformation,’ because ordinary people perceive extraordinary features of the material world according to their personal state of mind. Thus the word vācābhidhīyate indicates that conditioned souls describe the Lord’s material creation according to specific material circumstances. Because of the circumstantial relative definitions of material opulence, such opulence is never to be considered a direct plenary manifestation of the Lord’s personal form. When one’s state of mind is transformed into a favorable or affectionate state, one defines a manifestation of the Lord’s energy as ‘my son,’ ‘my father,’ ‘my husband,’ ‘my uncle,’ ‘the son of my brother,’ ‘my friend,’ and so on. One forgets that every living entity is actually part and parcel of the Supreme Personality of Godhead and that whatever opulences, talents or outstanding features one may exhibit are actually the potencies of the Lord. Similarly, when the mind is transformed into a negative or inimical state, one thinks, ‘This person will be the ruin of me,’ ‘This person must be finished by me,’ ‘He is my enemy’ or ‘I am his enemy,’ ‘He is a killer’ or ‘He should be killed.’ The negative state of mind is also expressed when one is attracted to the extraordinary material aspects of particular persons or objects but forgets that they are manifestations of the potency of the Personality of Godhead. Even the demigod Indra, who is quite obviously a manifestation of the Lord’s material opulences, is misunderstood by others. For example, Indra’s wife, Śacī, thinks that Indra is ‘my husband,’ whereas Aditi thinks that he is ‘my son.’ Jayanta thinks that he is ‘my father,’ Bṛhaspati thinks that he is ‘my disciple,’ whereas the demons feel that Indra is their personal enemy. Thus different personalities define him according to their mental state. The Lord’s material opulences, being relatively perceived, are therefore called mano-vikāra, which means they are dependent on mental states. This relative perception is material because it does not recognize the Supreme Personality of Godhead as the actual source of the particular opulence. If one sees Lord Kṛṣṇa as the source of all opulences and gives up all desires to enjoy or possess the Lord’s opulences, then one can see the spiritual nature of these opulences. At that time, even though one may continue to perceive the variety and distinctions of the material world, one will become perfect in Kṛṣṇa consciousness. One should not conclude, as do the voidist philosophers, that the Lord’s spiritual manifestations in the viṣṇu-tattva and liberated jīva categories are also products of relative perception and mental states. This useless idea is contrary to the entire body of the Supreme Personality of Godhead’s teachings to Śrī Uddhava.”

According to Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī, the word vācā also indicates the various Vedic literatures that describe the particular processes by which the Lord manifests His spiritual and material opulences, and in this context yathā indicates the specific procedures of manifestation and creation.

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
I have briefly described to you all my vibhūtis. But ordinary objects are also designated in the same way with words because of sentiments in the mind. The Lord summarizes everything. All vibhūtis, in general and particular, have been described. But vibhūtis well-known among people are identified through transformations of mind like affection and hatred. Those are not my vibhūtis. Out of affection, a transformation of the mind, someone will designate others, saying “This is my son, this is my father, this is my uncle, this is my nephew, this is my friend.” These are not vibhūtis of the Lord. Where there is hatred, another transformation of mind, one says, “This person is offensive to me, this person should be offended, this person hates me, this person should be hated, this person kills, this person should be killed.” These are not vibhūtis of the Lord. Thus, though Indra is my vibhūti, if Śacī says “This is my husband,” or if Aditi says “This is my son,” if Jayanta says “This is my father,” or Bṛhaspati says “This is my disciple,” if the demons say “This is our enemy,” those also are not vibhūtis of the Lord. My devotees without possessiveness can say for all things “This is the Lord’s vibhūti.” However, the spiritual vibhūtis may be thought of as son, brother etc. without any harm. The avatāras and devotees listed among the vibhūtis can be treated in this way. One should not take the meaning of the verse to be “All these vibhūtis are mere mental transformations (illusory).” Among the vibhūtis, Vāsudeva and impersonal Brahman also are listed. Brahman and Vāsudeva would then become imaginary entities. This would not be acceptable to the Śūnyavādīs and thus they would have to be excluded for the list. But then the word ete (all these) would become meaningless in the verse.

One should see all things as expansions of the Supreme Lord’s potency, and thus with speech, mind and senses one should offer respect to all things, without minimizing any living entity or material object. Since everything belongs to the Lord, everything ultimately should be engaged in the Lord’s service with great care. A self-realized devotee tolerates personal insult and does not become envious of any living entity, nor does he see anyone as his enemy. This is practical enlightenment. Although a pure devotee may criticize those who obstruct the Lord’s mission, such criticism is never personally motivated nor is it ever based on enviousness. An advanced devotee of the Lord may chastise his followers or criticize the demoniac, but only to carry out the mission of the Supreme Lord and never out of personal enmity or enviousness. For one who completely gives up the material concept of life there is no possibility of entering again onto the path of birth and death.

When a clay pot is properly baked it holds any liquid substance without leakage. If a clay pot is not properly baked, however, water or any other liquid within it will seep out and be lost. Similarly, a transcendentalist who does not control his speech and mind will find that his spiritual discipline and austerity gradually seep away and are lost. Dāna, or “charity,” refers to work performed for the welfare of others. Those who are trying to give the highest charity by preaching Kṛṣṇa consciousness should not engage in speaking cleverly for the satisfaction of beautiful women, nor should they attempt to become artificially intellectual simply for the sake of mundane academic prestige. One should not even think of intimate sexual relationships, nor should one daydream of acquiring a prestigious position. Otherwise, one’s determination to strictly practice Kṛṣṇa consciousness will be lost, as described here. One must control the mind, senses and speech by higher intelligence so that one’s life will be successful.

Translation
An aspirant who does not completely control his words and mind by intelligence will find that his spiritual vows, austerities and charity dissipate just as water flows from an unbaked clay pot. The fault is emphasized by stating the same in an opposite way.

Being surrendered to Me, one should control the speech, mind and life air, and then through loving devotional intelligence one will completely fulfill the mission of life.

One can develop loving devotional intelligence by perfectly chanting the Brahma-gāyatrī mantra awarded at the moment of brāhmaṇa initiation. By clear intelligence, one becomes naturally and spontaneously disinterested in the rewards offered by mental speculation and fruitive activities and takes full shelter of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Thus end the purports of the humble servants of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda to the Eleventh Canto, Sixteenth Chapter, of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, entitled “The Lord’s Opulence.”
