O - Ocean of Milk (5-12) Once, the demigods and demons forged an agreement to cooperatively churn the ocean of milk in order to attain the nectar of immortality. When the beautiful Mohini-murti incarnation appeared, however, She cheated the demons and delivered the nectar to the demigods. A great fight on the shore of the milk ocean ensued. Later, when Lord Siva saw Mohini-murti, even he was overcome by Her charm despite the presence of Parvati, his chaste wife.

Churning the Milk Ocean

O - Ocean of Milk (5-12) Churning the Milk Ocean Chapter 6, 7, 8 When Ksirodakasayi Vishnu appeared, the demigods offered words of praise, stunned by the splendour of His effulgence. The Lord advised the demigods to forge a truce with the demons so they could cooperatively churn the milk ocean, from which many fascinating things would emerge. Most importantly, the nectar of immortality would be produced which would safeguard the demigods from any further problems. The demigods thus approached Bali Maharaja, the king of demons, and everyone agreed to the proposal. They travelled to the ocean carrying Mandara mountain (as the churning rod) and the snake, Vasuki (as the rope). When they became fatigued and injured due to the sheer weight of the mountain, the Lord appeared to revive them and help transport it over. Upon arrival, they began churning the ocean, but after some time the churning rod began sinking. To rescue the joint operation, the Lord incarnated as a tortoise named Kurma to stabilise the mountain on His back. During the churning, a deadly poison was produced which posed a threat to everyone. The Prajapatis appealed to Lord Siva, who performed the most benevolent act of consuming that poison for the protection of everyone assembled. Great personalities voluntarily accept suffering, simply to relieve the suffering of others. The churning continued and other items appeared – a surabhi cow, a horse named Uccaihsrava, Airavata and other elephants, a gem known as Kaustubha, a parijata flower and the Apsaras, the most beautiful women in the universe. When Laksmidevi appeared, she was honoured for being the source of prosperity, abundance and grace. Since all living entities have some imperfections, she couldn’t identify an appropriate husband. The goddess of fortune eventually selected Lord Vishnu to be her master, and He offered Her an eternal place at His chest. When Varuni, the goddess of drinking, was generated, Lord Vishnu ordered the demons to accept her.

Demigods and Demons Fight

O - Ocean of Milk (5-12) Demigods and Demons Fight Chapter 10, 11 After the Lord returned to His abode, the disgruntled demons again declared war on the demigods. Headed by Bali Maharaja, they fought with renewed strength and conjured up a variety of perilous illusions. Baffled, the demigods again took shelter of the Lord, who began personally killing the demons, inspiring the demigods to fight with renewed energy. Though on the demoniac side, Bali Maharaja, an authority on pure devotion, rebuked the demigods with spotless philosophy. Indra acknowledged his points, and fought on with greater determination. The god of heavens battled Jambhasura and his relatives, including Namuci, whom he eventually killed with a special weapon of foam. After an epic trial of arms, the demons were practically annihilated. Taking instruction from Lord Brahma, Narada stopped the demigods from killing any more demons. The demigods returned to their abodes, while the surviving demons, along with Bali Maharaja, approached Sukracarya and were mystically revived by his yogic power.

Land of the Gods

O - Ocean of Milk (5-12) Land of the Gods “Here is proof of the omnipotence of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is above everyone. There are two classes of living entities - the demons and the demigods - and the Supreme Personality of Godhead is above them both. The demons believe in the “chance” theory of creation, whereas the demigods believe in creation by the hand of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The omnipotence of the Supreme Lord is proved here, for simply with one hand He lifted Mandara Mountain, the demigods and the demons, placed them on the back of Garuda and brought them to the ocean of milk. Now, the demigods, the devotees, would immediately accept this incident, knowing that the Lord can lift anything, however heavy it might be. But although demons were also carried along with the demigods, demons, upon hearing of this incident, would say that it is mythological.” (SB 8.6.38) This section of Srimad-Bhagavatam contains a multitude of different personalities: The Supreme Lord, a flurry of incarnations, powerful demigods, aggressive demons, and a variety of other living entities. Their interactions and conversations help us to gain clarity on the universal hierarchy that exists. Before allowing a doctor to operate on us, we present various enquiries and conduct rigorous research. Prior to attending an educational institution, we typically investigate its track record and question its suitability. When buying a used car, we’ll ask a reliable mechanic to do some key checks beforehand. So when it comes to divine worship, the most crucial decision in our entire life, it makes sense to clarify our understanding before we surrender. Unfortunately, many people don’t. Under the misconception that “all is one,” multitudes of people begin to worship personalities as divine without any substantial basis whatsoever. The task of identifying the Supreme is made even more difficult by dubious family traditions passed down through generations, and a mishmash of so-called gurus teaching their own concocted philosophies. Add to this confusion a mind-boggling range of deities, and you have a potent formula to baffle the uninformed observer. The Srimad-Bhagavatam, through various pastimes, thus clarifies the distinction between God, His incarnations, the demigods and general living entities. When knowledge is received through an authentic line of saintly, self-realised teachers, one gains an accurate understanding. In matters of divine worship, our convictions must be set on the firm foundation of genuine spiritual preceptors (guru), saintly authorities (sadhu) and authentic scriptures (sastra).

Demigods (Devata)

O - Ocean of Milk (5-12) Land of the Gods Demigods (Devata) Since Krishna is busily engaged in loving pastimes with His pure devotees, He doesn’t personally supervise the workings of the material cosmos. To this end, He has subordinate controllers (demigods) whom He empowers to manage various departments of universal affairs. Pleased by their devotion and good qualities, Krishna rewards them with these responsible posts. Indra controls the rain, Vayu controls the air, Varuna the water, Vivasvan the sun, and so on. These demigods are undoubtedly powerful living beings, but they are nonetheless subordinate to Krishna: “Lord Krishna alone is the supreme controller, and all others are His servants. They dance as He makes them do so” (CC Adi 5.142) . Although Lord Krishna can expand Himself into unlimited forms that possess His full potency, the demigods are not such expansions. Rather, the demigods, although undoubtedly powerful, belong to the category of the infinitesimal living entities, called jivas .

God (Bhagavan)

O - Ocean of Milk (5-12) Land of the Gods God (Bhagavan) The Srimad-Bhagavatam’s paribhasa-sutra , which reveals the purpose and essential contents of the scripture, unequivocally establishes Krishna as the Supreme Personality of Godhead: “All of the above-mentioned incarnations are either plenary portions or portions of the plenary portions of the Lord, but Lord Sri Krishna is the original Personality of Godhead. All of them appear on planets whenever there is a disturbance created by the atheists. The Lord incarnates to protect the theists.” (SB 1.3.28)

Incarnations (Avatara)

O - Ocean of Milk (5-12) Land of the Gods Incarnations (Avatara) One candle may be used to light many other candles, and each may burn with equal intensity, but that first candle always remains the original source. This is the analogy that Lord Brahma uses to explain Krishna, the original candle, and His incarnations, the subsequent candles. Incarnations of the Lord perform various functions. Often they appear to reinstate peace in the universe and create spiritual resurgence (yuga-avataras) . Other incarnations oversee aspects of material creation and maintenance (purusa-avataras) . Some incarnations of the Lord respond to the desires of the devotees and perform beautiful pastimes which enchant the living entities (lila-avataras) . Note: in the category of incarnations there are some personalities who are not directly God. Saktyavesa-avataras , for example, are known as divinely empowered incarnations, but are often ordinary souls (jivas) who perform superhuman acts. Brahma, who is known as a guna-avatara , is actually a post taken up by an ordinary living entity (except in special circumstances). Thus, although incarnations in the strictest sense refer to the various manifestations of the Supreme Lord, Krishna, they also sometimes include living entities.

Vedic, Vaisnava and Gaudiya

O - Ocean of Milk (5-12) Land of the Gods Vedic, Vaisnava and Gaudiya Due to the varieties of worship prescribed within the ‘Vedic house’ we find an array of practitioners who have a different focus of worship. In the modern world, the historical identifier ‘Hinduism,’ is used as an umbrella term to group together all such practitioners under one banner. Ironically, the word Hindu is itself a misnomer. It’s not mentioned anywhere in the Bhagavad-gita (the principle scripture for Hindus) or any other Vedic scripture for that matter. For conventional usage ( vyavaharika ) we may employ the term, but in the ultimate sense ( paramarthika ), followers of the Bhagavad-gita would avoid such an identifier. Under the umbrella term of Hinduism, we have worshippers of the Goddess ( saktas ), worshippers of Siva ( saivites ), worshippers of Vishnu or Krishna ( vaisnavas ) and followers of advaita-vada , which propounds the impersonal oneness of everything ( smartas ). Despite their diverse ideologies, they all reference the Bhagavad-gita as a common book of wisdom. Under the Vaisnava lineage, we also find four principle groups. The Vaisnava lineages descend from Laksmi, Brahma, Siva and the Four Kumaras. From these sources we find the broad traditions of the Sri sampradaya , Gaudiya sampradaya and Pusti Marg sampradaya prominent even today. Amongst all such Vaisnava lines, the Srimad-Bhagavatam, which illuminates the glories of Sri Krishna, is accepted as common. The Gaudiya lineage, which is connected to the Brahma-Madhva sampradaya , stems from Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the 15th Century incarnation of Sri Krishna. When Krishna appeared as Sri Chaitanya, He communicated the most confidential understandings, offered the simplest means of realising such truths, and made it accessible and open to every person without any distinction. In fact, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu took two essential principles from each of the Vaisnava sampradayas , and combined and synthesised all the various teachings. In the last 500 years, various groups have emerged to represent this tradition. The most prominent is ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness), which has spread to every major town and city in the world. All Gaudiyas accept Chaitanya-Charitamrita, the authoritative biography written by Krishnadasa Kaviraja Goswami, as a common literature.

Why do People Worship Demigods?

O - Ocean of Milk (5-12) Land of the Gods Why do People Worship Demigods? People often misunderstand the Vedic school to be a polytheistic tradition. The path of sanatana-dharma , however, is a strictly monotheistic path, though it offers a poly-cultural approach. The Vedic teachers were aware that the majority of people would not simply be searching for selfless connection with the one Supreme God, but would also have many other ‘not-so-spiritual’ desires during their sojourn in this world. Thus, different types of worship are recommended so that one can step onto the ‘spiritual ladder’ while simultaneously pursuing their material aspirations. For example, some scriptures recommend worship of various demigods to attain wealth, health and prosperity. Such worship and practice, over a period of time, will bring the practitioner to a more refined and pure sense of spirituality, where they completely divorce themselves from worldly pursuits. They eventually arrive at the point of desiring a relationship and reciprocation with the one Supreme God. Therefore, although strictly monotheistic, the Vedic tradition does recommend different types of worship. Unfortunately, people nowadays misinterpret all such worship to be on an equal level, asserting, quite erroneously, that all paths lead to the same destination. Other people become confused and frustrated by seeing so many varied recommendations of worship, feeling it to be contradictory and unclear. Thus, we must understand the various scriptures and their different injunctions in context of the entire body of knowledge. Only with such broad vision and integrative understanding, can one fully appreciate the ingenuity of the multi-level spirituality offered in the Vedic theology.

Why is Demigod Worship Unintelligent?

O - Ocean of Milk (5-12) Land of the Gods Why is Demigod Worship Unintelligent? Firstly, such worshippers are often unaware that Krishna is the ultimate rewarder and controller, and the demigods are simply His agents. They fail to realise that the demigods are powerful because they are empowered by Krishna. Secondly, worshipping demigods for material things is limited and temporary. Imagine a little child, who, if offered a fluffy doll or a cheque for a million dollars, takes the furry toy, not realising that with a million dollars he could have countless playthings. Thus, Krishna declares in no uncertain terms: “Men of small intelligence worship the demigods, and their fruits are limited and temporary. Those who worship the demigods go to the planets of the demigods, but My devotees reach My supreme abode.” ( BG 7.23 ) By worshipping Krishna, one automatically worships all other deities. We can’t water every leaf of a tree or offer food to every cell in the body. When we pour water on the root or supply food to the stomach, however, the complete tree or the entire body is satisfied. The Vedic scriptures tell us there are 33 million gods. How is it possible to satisfy them individually? We can’t even think of all those gods, what to speak of surrender to them. To separately worship each of those gods within the course of a year, we’d need to worship thousands of them every day!

Prayers at the Milk Ocean

O - Ocean of Milk (5-12) Prayers at the Milk Ocean Chapter 5 Sukadeva Goswami continued to describe the Manus – fifth was Raivata and sixth was Chaksusa. During Chaksusa Manu, the churning of the milk ocean (samudra-manthan) took place, and the Lord incarnated as the gigantic tortoise, Kurma. When Maharaja Pariksit requested further details about this incident, Sukadeva Goswami narrated the history. Once, Durvasa Muni encountered Indra riding on his elephant and offered the demigod a garland he was wearing. Indra disrespected that garland and carelessly placed it on his elephant’s trunk, who ended up trampling all over it. Durvasa was outraged by his attitude and cursed the demigods to lose their influence and power. They were subsequently defeated in battle by the demons, and had no choice but to approach Brahma for help. The engineer of the universe took them to the shore of the milk ocean, where he began reciting a series of beautiful prayers to invoke the mercy of Lord Vishnu.

O - Ocean of Milk (5-12) Siva and Mohini-Murti Chapter 12 Having heard about Mohini-murti, Lord Siva journeyed to see the Lord. He first offered a series of heartfelt prayers, and then expressed his desire to behold the beautiful form of Mohini-murti. The Lord disappeared, and Siva began looking all around. Then, in a nearby forest, the Lord reappeared in the captivating form of Mohini-murti. Siva was spellbound by Her beauty and became oblivious to everything and everyone around him! He chased the beautiful form and attempted to embrace Her, though She quickly slipped away from his grip. The Lord thus demonstrated His transcendental potency, and especially the beauty of the fair sex. Later, by the grace of the Lord, Siva became aware of what had transpired and was able to restrain himself.

The Nectar and Mohini-Murti

O - Ocean of Milk (5-12) The Nectar and Mohini-Murti Chapter 8, 9 Then Dhanvantari appeared, carrying a jug of nectar. This was the moment everyone had been waiting for! The demons snatched it in a flash and ran away, but then began quarrelling about how to divide it. Meanwhile, the disheartened demigods approached Vishnu in great anxiety seeing that the plan had backfired. To save the day, the Lord incarnated as the beautiful, exquisite, charming Mohini-murti. She became the mediator amongst the arguing demons, who all agreed to hand over the pot to Her. Disarmed by Her beauty, the captivated demons allowed her to administer the nectar to the demigods without any protest whatsoever. The only exception was the demon Rahu, who sat in line with the demigods and received some of the nectar. Though the Lord decapitated him, he remained alive due to the nectar he had drunk.

Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: O best of the Kurus! The devatās and demons summoned Vāsuki, king of the serpents and promised to give him a share of the nectar. They coiled Vāsuki around Mandara Mountain as a churning rope, and with great pleasure and enthusiasm they began to churn the ocean. The Seventh Chapter describes how the Lord appeared as Kūrma, and as well describes the various items churned from the ocean and Śiva drinking poison. There is also a glorification of Śiva. Vāsuki is king of the snakes. Inviting Vāsuki by promising him a share of nectar, they wrapped him around the mountain as a rope and began to churn the ocean.

The leaders of the demons thought it unwise to hold the tail, the inauspicious portion of the snake. Instead, they wanted to hold the front, which had been taken by the Personality of Godhead and the demigods, because that portion was auspicious and glorious. Thus the demons, on the plea that they were all highly advanced students of Vedic knowledge and were all famous for their birth and activities, protested that they wanted to hold the front of the snake.

The demons thought that the front of the snake was auspicious and that catching hold of that portion would be more chivalrous. Moreover, Daityas must always do the opposite of the demigods. That is their nature. We have actually seen this in relation to our Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement. We are advocating cow protection and encouraging people to drink more milk and eat palatable preparations made of milk, but the demons, just to protest such proposals, are claiming that they are advanced in scientific knowledge, as described here by the words svādhyāya-śruta-sampannāḥ. They say that according to their scientific way, they have discovered that milk is dangerous and that the beef obtained by killing cows is very nutritious. This difference of opinion will always continue. Indeed, it has existed since days of yore. Millions of years ago, there was the same competition. The demons, as a result of their so-called Vedic study, preferred to hold the side of the snake near the mouth. The Supreme Personality of Godhead thought it wise to catch hold of the dangerous part of the snake and allow the demons to hold the tail, which was not dangerous, but because of a competitive desire, the demons thought it wise to hold the snake near the mouth. If the demigods were going to drink poison, the demons would resolve, “Why should we not share the poison and die gloriously by drinking it?”

In regard to the words svādhyāya-śruta-sampannāḥ prakhyātā janma-karmabhiḥ, another question may be raised. If one is actually educated in Vedic knowledge, is famous for performing prescribed activities and has been born in a great aristocratic family, why should he be called a demon? The answer is that one may be highly educated and may have been born in an aristocratic family, but if he is godless, if he does not listen to the instructions of God, then he is a demon. There are many examples in history of men like Hiraṇyakaśipu, Rāvaṇa and Kaṁsa who were well educated, who were born in aristocratic families and who were very powerful and chivalrous in fighting, but who, because of deriding the Supreme Personality of Godhead, were called Rākṣasas, or demons. One may be very well educated, but if he has no sense of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, no obedience to the Supreme Lord, he is a demon. That is described by the Lord Himself in Bhagavad-gītā (7.15) :

na māṁ duṣkṛtino mūḍhāḥ prapadyante narādhamāḥ māyayāpahṛta-jṣānā āsuraṁ bhāvam āśritāḥ

“Those miscreants who are grossly foolish, lowest among mankind, whose knowledge is stolen by illusion, and who partake of the atheistic nature of demons, do not surrender unto Me.” Āsuraṁ bhāvam refers to not accepting the existence of God or the transcendental instructions of the Personality of Godhead. Bhagavad-gītā clearly consists of transcendental instructions imparted directly by the Supreme Personality of Godhead. But asuras, instead of accepting these instructions directly, make commentaries according to their own whimsical ways and mislead everyone, without profit even for themselves. One should therefore be very careful of demoniac, godless persons. According to the words of Lord Kṛṣṇa, even if a godless demon is very well educated, he must be considered a mūḍha, narādhama and māyayāpahṛta jṣāna.

Seeing the demons standing silent, the Supreme Lord smiled, and, along with devatās, giving up the front portion, took the tail of the snake. The Lord smiled. You will die because of the intense poison, since you have such pride.

Seeing the situation that had been created by the will of the Supreme, the unlimitedly powerful Lord, whose determination is infallible, took the wonderful shape of a tortoise, entered the water, and lifted the great Mandara Mountain.

Here is evidence that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the supreme controller of everything. As we have previously described, there are two classes of men — the demons and the demigods — but neither of them are supremely powerful. Everyone has experienced that hindrances are imposed upon us by the supreme power. The demons regard these hindrances as mere accidents or chance, but devotees accept them to be acts of the supreme ruler. When faced with hindrances, therefore, devotees pray to the Lord. Tat te ’nukampāṁ susamīkṣamāṇo bhuṣjāna evātma-kṛtaṁ vipākam. Devotees endure hindrances, accepting them to be caused by the Supreme Personality of Godhead and regarding them as benedictions. Demons, however, being unable to understand the supreme controller, regard such hindrances as accidental. Here, of course, the Supreme Personality of Godhead was present personally. It was by His will that there were hindrances, and by His will those hindrances were removed. The Lord appeared as a tortoise to support the great mountain. Kṣitir iha vipulatare tava tiṣṭhati pṛṣṭhe. The Lord held the great mountain on His back. Keśava dhṛta-kūrma-śarīra jaya jagadīśa hare. Dangers can be created by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and they can also be removed by Him. This is known to devotees, but demons cannot understand it.

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Understanding the solution at the time of an obstacle, the unlimitedly powerful Lord, whose determination is infallible, took the astonishing shape of a tortoise, entered the water, and lifted the great Mandara Mountain. The Lord saw the method possible when there is an obstacle (vighneśa-vidhim). “For this obstacle, there is this solution.” The Lord took the form of a tortoise and lifted the mountain up. He thought, “The form of the tortoise is suitable for lifting up the mountain in the water.” Avitathābhisandhiḥ means “he whose desires are always fulfilled.”

O King, when the demigods and demons, by the strength of their arms, rotated Mandara Mountain on the back of the extraordinary tortoise, the tortoise accepted the rolling of the mountain as a means of scratching His body, and thus He felt a pleasing sensation.

The Supreme Personality of Godhead is always the unlimited. Although the Supreme Personality of Godhead, in His body as a tortoise, held on His back the largest of mountains, Mandara-parvata, He did not feel any inconvenience. On the contrary, He apparently felt some itching, and thus the rotation of the mountain was certainly very pleasing.

Everyone in this material world is under the different modes of material nature. There were three different parties in the churning of Mandara Mountain — the demigods, who were in the mode of goodness, the demons, who were in the mode of passion, and the snake Vāsuki, who was in the mode of ignorance. Since they were all becoming tired (Vāsuki so much so that he was almost going to die), Lord Viṣṇu, to encourage them to continue the work of churning the ocean, entered into them according to their respective modes of nature — goodness, passion and ignorance.

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Thereafter, Viṣṇu entered the demons as the quality of passion. He entered the devatās as the quality of goodness, and entered Vāsuki as the quality of ignorance to stimulate and increase their strength and courage. Seeing that they would not be able to continue after a few moments, and that Vāsuki would die from the pain of his body rubbing against the mountain, the Lord mercifully took action. He entered the demons as the energy of rajas (asurena). Īrayan means “stimulating.” He entered the devatās as the energy of sattva. He entered Vāsuki as the energy of tamas (abodha). By illusion in ignorance, Vāsuki would not be conscious of his pain.

Situated in another form, like another huge mountain with a thousand hands, the Lord caught Mandara Mountain with one hand and stood on top of it. From the sky, the associates of Viṣṇu showered flowers upon him. When he saw the mountain rising up, the Lord then took action. The phrase brahma-bhavendra-mukhyair (by the main persons among Brahmā, Śiva and Indra) indicates the followers of Viṣṇu. Or it can mean the devatās were at the milk ocean and their expansions remained in the sky to shower flowers.

Vāsuki had thousands of eyes and mouths. From his mouths he breathed smoke and blazing fire, which affected the demons, headed by Pauloma, Kāleya, Bali and Ilvala. Thus the demons, who appeared like sarala trees burned by a forest fire, gradually became powerless.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Their vitality destroyed by the smoke and fire emanating from the breathing of the thousand cruel mouths of Vāsuki, the demons headed by Pauloma, Kāleya, Bali and Ilvala became like pine trees burned by a forest fire. The demons completely lost (āhata) their vitality. Sarala is a type of tree.

Because the demigods were also affected by the blazing breath of Vāsuki, their bodily lusters diminished, and their garments, garlands, weapons and faces were blackened by smoke. The devatās also lost their strength by the blazing breath of Vāsuki, and their garments, garlands, weapons and faces were blackened by smoke. Controlled by the Lord, clouds poured rain and breezes began to blow, carrying particles of water from the sea waves. Though the devatās were distant, holding the tail, they were also affected by the fire from Vāsuki’s mouths.

When engaged in this way, the Lord appeared like a beautifully situated mountain named Indranīla.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
The Lord, whose complexion was like a blackish cloud and who had reddish eyes, who wore yellow garments, a garland and earrings shining like lightning, with disheveled hair shining on his head, grabbed the snake with his victorious arms-- which award fearlessness throughout the universe-- and began churning the ocean, using Mandara Mountain as a churning rod. The Lord, on grasping that mountain, appeared like a sapphire mountain. He wore cloth of golden color and earrings shaped like makaras, flashing like lightning. He churned the ocean using the mountain as a rod (mathnā). Prati giri means “an opposite mountain.” Since Mandara was gold, the opposite mountain would be a mountain made of blue sapphire (the color of Viṣṇu).

The fish, sharks, tortoises and snakes were most agitated and perturbed. The entire ocean became turbulent, and even the large aquatic animals like whales, water elephants, crocodiles and timiṅgila fish [large whales that can swallow small whales] came to the surface. While the ocean was being churned in this way, it first produced a fiercely dangerous poison called hālahala.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
From the churning of the ocean, which disturbed the fish, sharks, tortoises and snakes and afflicted even the whales, water elephants, crocodiles and timiṅgila fish, a fierce poison called hālahala first appeared. Because the plants offered in the ocean had both poison and nectar in them, first the poison had to be drawn out. Dvirūpa-koṣa says that the word can be written hālahala, hālāhala or halāhala. The fish became disturbed, wondering what disaster was occurring. Unmakara is a big makara. Timi and timiṅgala are types of fish.

O King, when that uncontrollable poison was forcefully spreading up and down in all directions, all the demigods, along with the Lord Himself, approached Lord Śiva [Sadāśiva]. Feeling unsheltered and very much afraid, they sought shelter of him.

One may question that since the Supreme Personality of Godhead was personally present, why did He accompany all the demigods and people in general to take shelter of Lord Sadāśiva instead of intervening Himself. In this connection Śrīla Madhvācārya warns:

rudrasya yaśaso ’rthāya svayaṁ viṣṇur viṣaṁ vibhuḥ na saṣjahre samartho ’pi vāyuṁ coce praśāntaye

Lord Viṣṇu was competent to rectify the situation, but in order to give credit to Lord Śiva, who later drank all the poison and kept it in his neck, Lord Viṣṇu did not take action.

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
O King! That most virulent poison spread in all directions as well as up and down. Seeing that intolerable poison with no cure, all the frightened devatās and demons, along with the Lord himself, took shelter of Śiva. The poison spread in all directions and up and down as well. It spread slowly; otherwise the whole creation would be destroyed. Prajāḥ here refers to the devatās and demons. Normal persons could not quickly cross the ocean and go to Kailāsa. Seeing this poison which had no remedy (aprati), they became afraid. Having no protection they went to Śiva. The Supreme Lord did not act in this situation because he wanted to give fame to his devotee Śiva having the half-moon as his head ornament.

The prajāpatis said: O greatest of all demigods, Mahādeva, Supersoul of all living entities and cause of their happiness and prosperity, we have come to the shelter of your lotus feet. Now please save us from this fiery poison, which is spreading all over the three worlds.

Since Lord Śiva is in charge of annihilation, why should he be approached for protection, which is given by Lord Viṣṇu? Lord Brahmā creates, and Lord Śiva annihilates, but both Lord Brahmā and Lord Śiva are incarnations of Lord Viṣṇu and are known as śaktyāveśa-avatāras. They are endowed with a special power like that of Lord Viṣṇu, who is actually all-pervading in their activities. Therefore whenever prayers for protection are offered to Lord Śiva, actually Lord Viṣṇu is indicated, for otherwise Lord Śiva is meant for destruction. Lord Śiva is one of the īśvaras, or the controllers known as śaktyāveśa-avatāras. Therefore he can be addressed as having the qualities of Lord Viṣṇu.

O lord, you are the cause of bondage and liberation of the entire universe because you are its ruler. Those who are advanced in spiritual consciousness surrender unto you, and therefore you are the cause of mitigating their distresses, and you are also the cause of their liberation. We therefore worship Your Lordship.

Actually Lord Viṣṇu maintains and accomplishes all good fortune. If one has to take shelter of Lord Viṣṇu, why should the demigods take shelter of Lord Śiva? They did so because Lord Viṣṇu acts through Lord Śiva in the creation of the material world. Lord Śiva acts on behalf of Lord Viṣṇu. When the Lord says in Bhagavad-gītā (14.4) that He is the father of all living entities ( ahaṁ bīja-pradaḥ pitā ), this refers to actions performed by Lord Viṣṇu through Lord Śiva. Lord Viṣṇu is always unattached to material activities, and when material activities are to be performed, Lord Viṣṇu performs them through Lord Śiva. Lord Śiva is therefore worshiped on the level of Lord Viṣṇu. When Lord Viṣṇu is untouched by the external energy He is Lord Viṣṇu, but when He is in touch with the external energy, He appears in His feature as Lord Śiva.

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda

You alone are the controller of the whole universe and the controller of bondage and liberation. Intelligent people worship you, the guru who takes away the distress of surrendered souls. “But Viṣṇu is the protector of all beings. Take shelter of him!” You are the only lord. There are not many lords. You and Viṣṇu are one, the only difference being that you are touched by the guṇas and Viṣṇu is not.

This prayer is actually offered to Lord Viṣṇu, the puruṣa, who in His incarnations as the guṇa-avatāras assumes the names Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Maheśvara.

Translation
O self-manifesting, powerful lord! When you act in creation, maintenance and annihilation by your energy of māyā, you assume the names Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Maheśvara. They praise his form as the (third) puruṣa. When you perform creation, you take on the names of Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Śiva.

O lord, the five important Vedic mantras are represented by your five faces, from which the thirty-eight most celebrated Vedic mantras have been generated. Your Lordship, being celebrated as Lord Śiva, is self-illuminated. You are directly situated as the supreme truth, known as Paramātmā.

The five mantras mentioned in this connection are as follows: (1) Puruṣa, (2) Aghora, (3) Sadyojāta, (4) Vāmadeva, and (5) Īśāna. These five mantras are within the category of thirty-eight special Vedic mantras chanted by Lord Śiva, who is therefore celebrated as Śiva or Mahādeva. Another reason why Lord Śiva is called Śiva, which means “all-auspicious,” is that he is self-illuminated, exactly like Lord Viṣṇu, who is the Paramātmā. Because Lord Śiva is directly an incarnation of Lord Viṣṇu, he is situated as Lord Viṣṇu’s direct representative. This fact is corroborated by a Vedic mantra: patiṁ viśvasyātmeśvaraṁ śāśvatam. śivam acyutam. The Supersoul is called by many names, of which Maheśvara, Śiva and Acyuta are especially mentioned.

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
O lord! The five Vedic mantras are your five mouths, from which the thirty-eight secondary mantras have arisen. He who is your Paramātmā is called Śiva. Visṇu, self-manifesting, is your shelter. Your five mouths are the five mantras: tat-puruṣa, aghora, sadyojāta, vāmadeva, and īṣana, by which mouths arise thirty-eighty secondary mantras, by dividing the verses. He who has the position of Paramātmā for you is called Śiva. The self-revealed Viṣṇu is your shelter.

O Lord Girīśa, since the impersonal Brahman effulgence is transcendental to the material modes of goodness, passion and ignorance, the various directors of this material world certainly cannot appreciate it or even know where it is. It is not understandable even to Lord Brahmā, Lord Viṣṇu or the King of heaven, Mahendra.

The brahmajyoti is actually the effulgence of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. As stated in Brahma-saṁhitā (5.40) :

yasya prabhā prabhavato jagad-aṇḍa-koṭi- koṭiṣv aśeṣa-vasudhādi-vibhūti-bhinnam tad brahma niṣkalam anantam aśeṣa-bhūtaṁ govindam ādi-puruṣaṁ tam ahaṁ bhajāmi

“I worship Govinda, the primeval Lord, who is endowed with great power. The glowing effulgence of His transcendental form is the impersonal Brahman, which is absolute, complete and unlimited and which displays the varieties of countless planets, with their different opulences, in millions and millions of universes.” Although the impersonal feature of the Absolute is an expansion of the rays of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, He does not need to take care of the impersonalists who enter the brahmajyoti. Kṛṣṇa says in Bhagavad-gītā (9.4) , mayā tatam idaṁ sarvaṁ jagad avyakta-mūrtinā: “In My impersonal feature I pervade this entire universe.” Thus the avyakta-mūrti, the impersonal feature, is certainly an expansion of Kṛṣṇa’s energy. Māyāvādīs, who prefer to merge into this Brahman effulgence, worship Lord Śiva. The mantras referred to in text 29 are called mukhāni paṣcopaniṣadas taveśa. Māyāvādīs take all these mantras seriously in worshiping Lord Śiva. These mantras are as follows: (1) tat puruṣāya vidmahe śāntyai, (2) mahā-devāya dhīmahi vidyāyai, (3) tan no rudraḥ pratiṣṭhāyai, (4) pracodayāt dhṛtyai, (5) aghorebhyas tamā … , (6) atha ghorebhyo mohā … , (7) aghorebhyo rakṣā … , (8) aghoratarebhyo nidrā … , (9) sarvebhyaḥ sarva-vyādhyai, (10) sarva-sarvebhyo mṛtyave, (11) namas te ’stu kṣudhā … , (12) rudra-rūpebhyas tṛṣṇā … , (13) vāmadevāya rajā … , (14) jyeṣṭhāya svāhā … , (15) śreṣṭhāya ratyai, (16) rudrāya kalyāṇyai, (17) kālāya kāmā … , (18) kala-vikaraṇāya sandhinyai, (19) bala-vikaraṇāya kriyā … , (20) balāya vṛddhyai, (21) balacchāyā … , (22) pramathanāya dhātryai, (23) sarva-bhūta-damanāya bhrāmaṇyai, (24) manaḥ-śoṣiṇyai, (25) unmanāya jvarā … , (26) sadyojātaṁ prapadyāmi siddhyai, (27) sadyojātāya vai namaḥ ṛddhyai, (28) bhave dityai, (29) abhave lakṣmyai, (30) nātibhave medhā … , (31) bhajasva māṁ kāntyai, (32) bhava svadhā … , (33) udbhavāya prabhā … , (34) īśānaḥ sarva-vidyānāṁ śaśinyai, (35) īśvaraḥ sarva-bhūtānām abhaya-dā … , (36) brahmādhipatir brahmaṇodhipatir brahman brahmeṣṭa-dā … , (37) śivo me astu marīcyai, (38) sadāśivaḥ jvālinyai.

The impersonal Brahman is unknown even to the other directors of the material creation, including Lord Brahmā, Lord Indra and even Lord Viṣṇu. This does not mean, however, that Lord Viṣṇu is not omniscient. Lord Viṣṇu is omniscient, but He does not need to understand what is going on in His all-pervading expansion. Therefore in Bhagavad-gītā the Lord says that although everything is an expansion of Him ( mayā tatam idaṁ sarvam ), He does not need to take care of everything ( na cāhaṁ teṣv avasthitaḥ ), since there are various directors like Lord Brahmā, Lord Śiva and Indra.

Translation
O protector of mountains! Your supreme light known as Brahman which is devoid of rajas, tamas and sattva and devoid of distinctions is not known by the devatās, Viṣṇu or Indra. O protector of mountains! Your light which is para Brahman cannot be understood by the protectors of planets. Since the form of Viṣṇu (vaikuṇṭha) is the Supreme Brahman, it is not a fault if Viṣṇu does not know this impersonal Brahman belonging to him, since it is like knowledge of a flower in the sky. That does not destroy his omniscience. Or the words from giritra to surendra can all be taken as vocative case.

When annihilation is performed by the flames and sparks emanating from your eyes, the entire creation is burned to ashes. Nonetheless, you do not know how this happens. What then is to be said of your destroying the Dakṣa-yajṣa, Tripurāsura and the kālakūṭa poison? Such activities cannot be subject matters for prayers offered to you.

Since Lord Śiva considers the great acts he performs to be very unimportant, what was to be said of counteracting the strong poison produced by the churning? The demigods indirectly prayed that Lord Śiva counteract the kālakūṭa poison, which was spreading throughout the universe.

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Destroying the poison is nothing for you, who have destroyed many places of violence, such as Dakṣa’s sacrifice, the city of Tripura, and the demons Kāla and Gara. You are not even aware that the universe at the time of destruction turns to ashes by the sparks of fire emanating from your eye. It is not difficult for you to destroy the poison that is now present. The action of destroying this poison is not to be praised, since you destroy all the places where there is violence to living beings, such as Dakṣa’s animal sacrifice. This is too insignificant. Kāla and Gara were two demons that Śiva killed, but also this refers to the poison. It is mentioned in the past tense to express the fact that it is necessary to destroy it. You are not even aware that the universe is destroyed when you glance. Thus destroying this poison will be insignificant for you.

Exalted, self-satisfied persons who preach to the entire world think of your lotus feet constantly within their hearts. However, when persons who do not know your austerity see you moving with Umā, they misunderstand you to be lusty, or when they see you wandering in the crematorium they mistakenly think that you are ferocious and envious. Certainly they are shameless. They cannot understand your activities.

Lord Śiva is the topmost Vaiṣṇava ( vaiṣṇavānāṁ yathā śambhuḥ ). It is therefore said, vaiṣṇavera kriyā-mudrā vijṣe nā bujhaya. Even the most intelligent person cannot understand what a Vaiṣṇava like Lord Śiva is doing or how he is acting. Those who are conquered by lusty desires and anger cannot estimate the glories of Lord Śiva, whose position is always transcendental. In all the activities associated with lusty desires, Lord Śiva is an implement of ātma-rāma. Ordinary persons, therefore, should not try to understand Lord Śiva and his activities. One who tries to criticize the activities of Lord Śiva is shameless.

When the demigods offered these prayers to Lord Śiva, their inner purpose was to please him so that he would rectify the disturbing situation created by the hālahala poison. As stated in Bhagavad-gītā (7.20) , kāmais tais tair hṛta jṣānāḥ prapadyante ’nya-devatāḥ: when one worships demigods, this is certainly because of deep-rooted desires he wants fulfilled by the mercy of those demigods. People in general, being bewildered by the illusory energy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, are always engaged in animosity toward one another. But devotees, even at the risk of their own temporary lives, try to save them.

This is the characteristic of a Vaiṣṇava. Para-duḥkha-duḥkhī: a Vaiṣṇava is always unhappy to see the conditioned souls unhappy. Otherwise, he would have no business teaching them how to become happy. In materialistic life, people must certainly engage in activities of animosity. Materialistic life is therefore compared to saṁsāra-dāvānala, a blazing forest fire that automatically takes place. Lord Śiva and his followers in the paramparā system try to save people from this dangerous condition of materialistic life. This is the duty of devotees following the principles of Lord Śiva and belonging to the Rudra sampradāya. There are four Vaiṣṇava sampradāyas, and the Rudra sampradāya is one of them because Lord Śiva (Rudra) is the best of the Vaiṣṇavas ( vaiṣṇavānāṁ yathā śambhuḥ ). Indeed, as we shall see, Lord Śiva drank all the poison for the benefit of humanity.

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Among people who are bewildered by the Lord’s māyā and who are always engaged in animosity toward one another, the devotees protect other living entities at the risk of their own temporary lives. “But you, being an ātmārāma, should ignore these jīvas subjected to mutual hatred in the material world.” This verse answers.

Although there was such a great quantity of poison that it spread all over the universe, Lord Śiva had such great power that he reduced the poison to a small quantity so that he could hold it in his palm. One should not try to imitate Lord Śiva. Lord Śiva can do whatever he likes, but those who try to imitate Lord Śiva by smoking ganja and other poisonous things will certainly be killed because of such activities.

It is said that great personalities almost always accept voluntary suffering because of the suffering of people in general. This is considered the highest method of worshiping the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is present in everyone’s heart.

Here is an explanation of how those engaged in activities for the welfare of others are very quickly recognized by the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The Lord says in Bhagavad-gītā (18.68-69), ya idaṁ paramaṁ guhyaṁ mad-bhakteṣv abhidhāsyati … na ca tasmān manuṣyeṣu kaścin me priya-kṛttamaḥ: “One who preaches the message of Bhagavad-gītā to My devotees is most dear to Me. No one can excel him in satisfying Me by worship.” There are different kinds of welfare activities in this material world, but the supreme welfare activity is the spreading of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Other welfare activities cannot be effective, for the laws of nature and the results of karma cannot be checked. It is by destiny, or the laws of karma, that one must suffer or enjoy. For instance, if one is given a court order, he must accept it, whether it brings suffering or profit. Similarly, everyone is under obligations to karma and it reactions. No one can change this. Therefore the śāstra says:

tasyaiva hetoḥ prayateta kovido na labhyate yad bhramatām upary adhaḥ

( Bhāg. 1.5.18 )

One should endeavor for that which is never obtained by wandering up and down the universe as a result of the reactions of karma. What is that? One should endeavor to become Kṛṣṇa conscious. If one tries to spread Kṛṣṇa consciousness all over the world, he should be understood to be performing the best welfare activity. The Lord is automatically very pleased with him. If the Lord is pleased with him, what is left for him to achieve? If one has been recognized by the Lord, even if he does not ask the Lord for anything, the Lord, who is within everyone, supplies him whatever he wants. This is also confirmed in Bhagavad-gītā ( teṣāṁ nityābhiyuktānāṁ yoga-kṣemaṁ vahāmy aham ). Again, as stated here, tapyante loka-tāpena sādhavaḥ prāyaśo janāḥ. The best welfare activity is raising people to the platform of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, since the conditioned souls are suffering only for want of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. The Lord Himself also comes to mitigate the suffering of humanity.

yadā yadā hi dharmasya glānir bhavati bhārata abhyutthānam adharmasya tadātmānaṁ sṛjāmy aham

paritrāṇāya sādhūnāṁ vināśāya ca duṣkṛtām dharma-saṁsthāpanārthāya sambhavāmi yuge yuge

“Whenever and wherever there is a decline in religious practice, O descendant of Bharata, and a predominant rise of irreligion — at that time I descend Myself. To deliver the pious and to annihilate the miscreants, as well as to reestablish the principles of religion, I Myself appear millennium after millennium.” (Bg. 4.7-8) All the śāstras conclude, therefore, that spreading the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is the best welfare activity in the world. Because of the ultimate benefit this bestows upon people in general, the Lord very quickly recognizes such service performed by a devotee.

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Generally well-bred people suffer because of others’ suffering. This is most satisfying to the Supreme Lord, the soul of all beings.

Scorpions, cobras, poisonous drugs and other animals whose bites are poisonous took the opportunity to drink whatever little poison had fallen and scattered from Lord Śiva’s hand while he was drinking.

Mosquitoes, jackals, dogs and other varieties of dandaśūka, or animals whose bites are poisonous, drank the poison of the samudra-manthana, the churned ocean, since it was available after it fell from the palms of Lord Śiva.

Thus end the Bhaktivedanta purports of the Eighth Canto, Seventh Chapter, of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, entitled “Lord Śiva Saves the Universe by Drinking Poison.”
