C - Chitraketu (14-19) How could a demon like Vritrasura have such glorious devotional qualities? In answer, Sukadeva Goswami explained his previous birth as Chitraketu, during which he had great devotion for Lord Sankarsana. Chitraketu became enlightened through a rollercoaster of events – first he was childless (despite having 10 million wives), then his newborn child abruptly died and then the son reappeared and taught him the harsh realities of life. Later, when Chitraketu offended Parvati, she cursed him to become a demon in his next life. Chitraketu humbly accepted his destiny, seeing all occurrences as the Lord’s mercy.

Chitraketu Cursed

C - Chitraketu (14-19) Chitraketu Cursed Chapter 17 Along with seeing the Lord, Chitraketu was also benedicted with rulership over the Vidyadhara planet. As he enjoyed in that realm, travelling from place-toplace, he once encountered Lord Siva publicly embracing Parvati, surrounded by an august assembly of Siddhas, Caranas and great sages. Chitraketu was astonished by the sight and laughed loudly, much to the disapproval of Parvati. There was no offensive intention since Chitraketu was simply exhibiting his amazement at Lord Siva’s aloofness. Nevertheless, Parvati, entirely unimpressed by his reaction, cursed him to become a demon. Chitraketu humbly accepted it without protest. Devotees, Siva said, never fear any condition of life – heaven, hell or liberation are all the same since their only aspiration is to serve the Lord. Chitraketu thus became the ‘demon’ Vritrasura in his next life.

Chitraketu Enlightened

C - Chitraketu (14-19) Chitraketu Enlightened Chapter 15, 16 The two sages instructed Chitraketu in the harsh realities of life; all relationships of this world are temporary, and the material designations we assume are ultimately imaginary. The illuminating knowledge empowered Chitraketu to gain a broader perspective. Being eager for more, Narada guided Chitraketu in cultivating an internal detachment and gave him a mantra to chant. Then, by his mystic potency, Narada empowered the child to speak words of wisdom which further highlighted the transitory nature of everything in this world. The funeral ceremony was performed and the envious queens were so ashamed of their conduct that they gave up the aspiration to have children. The sages departed and Chitraketu dedicated himself to reciting the mantra given to him by Narada. Within days he was able to have the direct vision of Lord Sesa, and he overflowed with gratitude. Pleased by his prayers, the Supreme Lord explained further knowledge of Himself to Chitraketu.

Chitraketu’s Lamentation

C - Chitraketu (14-19) Chitraketu’s Lamentation Chapter 14 When Maharaja Pariksit enquired how a demon could possess such exalted consciousness, Sukadeva Goswami described Vritrasura’s previous birth as Chitraketu. Despite marrying ten million wives, Chitraketu had no children. When the great sage Angira Rishi visited, Chitraketu warmly received him. He frankly expressed his dissatisfaction to the sage, who mercifully arranged for his first wife, Krtadyuti, to have a son. There was, however, a caveat – he predicted the child would bring both happiness ( harsa ) and lamentation ( soka ). Upon the birth of this son, Chitraketu and all the citizens were overjoyed. His dream had finally been fulfilled! The other wives, however, didn’t share that joy, feeling neglected and sidelined by their husband. Clouded by envy and overcome by selfishness, they administered poison to the child and mercilessly killed him. Krtadyuti fainted in shock, the inhabitants of the palace were in tears and Chitraketu practically lost all consciousness! The mother condemned the cruel acts of providence and begged her child to wake up, but it was futile. Understanding their pain, the sages Narada and Angira arrived on the scene to offer enlightening words.

Diti, Indra and the Maruts

C - Chitraketu (14-19) Diti, Indra and the Maruts Chapter 18, 19 Sukadeva Goswami continued describing the descendants of Daksa’s daughters, particularly Diti (mother of the demons) and Aditi (mother of the demigods). Those offspring became known as the Daityas and Adityas respectively. Diti had a grudge against Indra since Vishnu had appeared to save him by killing her sons, Hiranyaksa and Hiranyakasipu. Angered, she now desired another son who would kill Indra. Through her womanly charm she conquered Kasyapa, her husband, who agreed to unite with her. When she expressed what kind of child she wanted, however, he was shocked and condemned himself. Nevertheless, Kasyapa ingeniously instructed Diti to strictly follow the Vaisnava austerity of Pumsavana-vrata. This would satisfy her desire for a son, but simultaneously purify her consciousness from the enmity towards Indra and the demigods. While Diti engaged in the vow ( vrata ), Indra closely monitored her every move, looking for some discrepancy to capitalise upon. When Indra caught her in violation of the strict regulations, he entered her womb and sliced the embryo into forty-nine parts. Those children became known as the Maruts, who later made friends with Indra and were saved. Upon the request of Maharaja Pariksit, Sukadeva Goswami went on to explain the details of the Pumsavana-vrata.

River of Names

C - Chitraketu (14-19) River of Names “The instructions given by Narada and Angira Muni are the true spiritual instructions for the illusioned conditioned soul. This world is temporary, but because of our previous karma we come here and accept bodies, creating temporary relationships in terms of society, friendship, love, nationality and community, which are all finished at death. These temporary relationships did not exist in the past, nor will they exist in the future. Therefore, at the present moment the so-called relationships are illusions.” (SB 6.15.2) When Maharaja Chitraketu was overwhelmed by lamentation at the sudden death of his beloved son, he received a series of transcendental instructions. Firstly, the great sages Narada and Angira came and reminded Chitraketu about the body, soul, inevitable death and the subsequent transmigration that everyone will experience. Later, Chitraketu’s son came back to life and spoke to the King, quite bluntly stating: “In which birth were these individuals my mother and father? No one is actually my mother and father. How can I accept these two people as my parents?” Later, after absorbing himself in prayer, Chitraketu was further enlightened in transcendental knowledge by the Supreme Lord Himself. At every stage he received powerful insights to elevate his consciousness and bring perspective to the situation he was facing. The Srimad-Bhagavatam offers a series of interesting analogies to describe the transitory nature of relationships in this material world: Tourists meeting in a hotel: “Thereafter, Devayani, the daughter of Sukracarya, understood that the materialistic association of husband, friends and relatives is like the association in a hotel full of tourists. The relationships of society, friendship and love are created by the maya of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, exactly as in a dream.” (SB 9.19.27-28) Travellers in a restaurant: “My dear mother, in a restaurant or place for drinking cold water, many travellers are brought together, and after drinking water they continue to their respective destinations. Similarly, living entities join together in a family, and later, as a result of their own actions, they are led apart to their destinations.” (SB 7.2.21) Sticks meeting in the river: “Many planks and sticks, unable to stay together, are carried away by the force of a river’s waves. Similarly, although we are intimately related with friends and family members, we are unable to stay together because of our varied past deeds and the waves of time.” (SB 10.5.25) Fallible Soldiers in an army: “Persons devoid of atma-tattva do not enquire into the problems of life, being too attached to the fallible soldiers like the body, children and wife. Although sufficiently experienced, they still do not see their inevitable destruction.” (SB 2.1.4) Dreams that will end: “In a dream we form a society of friendship and love, and when we awaken we see that it has ceased to exist. Similarly, one’s gross society, family and love are also a dream, and this dream will be over as soon as one dies. Therefore, whether one is dreaming in a subtle way or a gross way, these dreams are all false and temporary.” (SB 7.14.3-4) Elements scattered by the wind: “Just as the wind brings together masses of clouds, blades of grass, wisps of cotton and particles of dust, only to scatter them all again, so the creator deals with His created beings in the same way.” (SB 10.82.43) In a conversation with Dhritarastra, Akrura concludes: “In this world no one has any permanent relationship with anyone else, O King. We cannot stay forever even with our own body, what to speak of our wife, children and the rest. Every creature is born alone and dies alone, and alone one experiences the just rewards of his good and evil deeds.” (SB 10.49.20-21) So how do we mediate the relationships of this world? Are all of our connections ultimately meaningless and simply a waste of time?

Attention vs Attachment

C - Chitraketu (14-19) River of Names Attention vs Attachment Without genuinely investing in relationships, situations and aspirations, how can we make any real progress in those areas? Where the attention goes, energy flows and results invariably show. Simultaneously, however, wisdom teachers constantly remind us to remain detached and aloof; everything in this world is a fleeting reality destined for destruction at the ruthless hands of time. In ultimate reality, we are building castles in the sand. So what’s the balance? When does genuine concern and responsibility evolve into an unhealthy attachment? How can we identify the extremes of over-zealous endeavour and irresponsible aloofness? Is it possible to cultivate a spiritually elevated consciousness whilst sensitively navigating day-to-day realities and responsibilities? The Srimad-Bhagavatam makes a clear distinction between being attentive and being attached. Every spiritual practitioner should know how to strike the balance and avoid overstepping the line. Intelligence vs Emotion (The Driver) – an attentive person is driven to act by spiritual intelligence, clearly understanding the broader need and purpose behind their endeavour. An attached person, however, is driven by fleeting emotions and is therefore flickering in effort and determination. It’s not that an attentive person is not passionate or emotionally involved, but every endeavour is founded upon wisdom and knowledge. Are you driven by intelligence or emotion? Endeavour vs Result (The Success) – an attentive person invests energy in crafting a perfect endeavour, doing everything within their control to make the best attempt possible. This is their measure of success. An attached person, however, evaluates success based on the outcome and result. An attentive person is not indifferent to the results, but simply uses them to understand how they can refine and improve their endeavour. Are you concerned about giving your best or achieving the best? Eternal vs Temporary (The Vision) – an attentive person is always awake to the backdrop of spiritual reality, though living and functioning in the ‘real’ world. An attached person, however, engrossed and entangled in their vision of this temporary life, is rendered oblivious to the ‘bigger picture.’ Attentive people are undoubtedly practical, but simultaneously transcendental. How many of your desires, decisions and directions are formulated with reference to the ultimate purpose of life?

Transcendental Affection

C - Chitraketu (14-19) River of Names Transcendental Affection In the First Canto of Srimad-Bhagavatam we find the striking prayers of Queen Kunti. With regards to family attachments, she prays: “O Lord of the universe, soul of the universe, O personality of the form of the universe, please, therefore, sever my tie of affection for my kinsmen, the Pandavas and the Vrsnis. O Lord of Madhu, as the Ganges forever flows to the sea without hindrance, let my attraction be constantly drawn unto You without being diverted to anyone else.” ( SB 1.8.41 - 42 ) In the purport, Srila Prabhupada clarifies how affection cannot be annihilated, but must be redirected in a spiritual way: “Perfection of pure devotional service is attained when all attention is diverted towards the transcendental loving service of the Lord. To cut off the tie of all other affections does not mean complete negation of the finer elements, like affection for someone else. This is not possible. A living being, whoever he may be, must have this feeling of affection for others because this is a symptom of life… The so-called affection for family, society, country, etc., consists of different phases of sense gratification. When this desire is changed for the satisfaction of the Lord, it is called devotional service.” (SB 1.8.42) But we may still wonder why Queen Kunti’s affection for her family members, who were all Krishna’s devotees, is problematic. Srila Prabhupada further clarifies: “Her affection for the Pandavas and the Vrsnis is not out of the range of devotional service because the service of the Lord and the service of the devotees are identical. Sometimes service to the devotee is more valuable than service to the Lord. But here the affection of Kuntidevi for the Pandavas and the Vrsnis was due to family relation. This tie of affection in terms of material relation is the relation of maya because the relations of the body or the mind are due to the influence of the external energy. Relations of the soul, established in relation with the Supreme Soul, are factual relations. When Kuntidevi wanted to cut off the family relation, she meant to cut off the relation of the skin. The skin relation is the cause of material bondage, but the relation of the soul is the cause of freedom.” (SB 1.8.42)

“The Personality of Godhead is perfect and complete, and because He is completely perfect, all emanations from Him, such as this phenomenal world, are perfectly equipped as complete wholes. Whatever is produced of the complete whole is also complete in itself. Because He is the complete whole, even though so many complete units emanate from Him, He remains the complete balance.” Therefore, to take shelter of the Supreme Lord is required. Whatever a devotee needs will be supplied by the complete Supreme Personality of Godhead ( teṣāṁ nityābhiyuktānāṁ yoga-kṣemaṁ vahāmy aham ). Therefore a pure devotee will not ask anything from the Lord. He simply offers the Lord his respectful obeisances, and the Lord is prepared to accept whatever the devotee can secure to worship Him, even patraṁ puṣpaṁ phalaṁ toyam a leaf, flower, fruit or water. There is no need to artificially exert oneself. It is better to be plain and simple and with respectful obeisances offer to the Lord whatever one can secure. The Lord is completely able to bless the devotee with all opulences.

O Lord, complete in your desires! I offer my respectful obeisances unto you, the independent Lord, the master of great wealth, the giver of all perfections. Alam te namaḥ astu means “May I offer plentiful respect to you.” The devatās depend on their servants to accomplish their own powers, but you do not. That is expressed in this verse. Therefore you are called independent (nirapekṣāya) because you are endowed with all great powers by your very nature. You are full in your desires. How will I please you by my offerings? You are the master of great wealth. How can I possibly please you by offering houses, gardens, elephants, servants, singing, dancing, drums, instruments and chanting of the Vedas? You are the giver of Svarga, liberation and prema (sakala-siddhaye). How can I please you by offering karma, jṣāna, yoga or bhakti sādhana.

O my Lord, because You are endowed with causeless mercy, all opulences, all prowess and all glories, strength and transcendental qualities, You are the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the master of everyone.

In this verse the words tato ’si bhagavān prabhuḥ mean “Therefore You are the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the master of everyone.” The Supreme Personality of Godhead is endowed with all six opulences in full, and moreover He is extremely kind to His devotee. Although He is full in Himself, He nonetheless wants all the living entities to surrender unto Him so that they may engage in His service. Thus He becomes satisfied. Although He is full in Himself, He nonetheless becomes pleased when His devotee offers Him patraṁ puṣpaṁ phalaṁ toyam — a leaf, flower, fruit or water — in devotion. Sometimes the Lord, as the child of mother Yaśodā, requests His devotee for some food, as if He were very hungry. Sometimes He tells His devotee in a dream that His temple and His garden are now very old and that He cannot enjoy them very nicely. Thus He requests the devotee to repair them. Sometimes He is buried in the earth, and as if unable to come out Himself, He requests His devotee to rescue Him. Sometimes He requests His devotee to preach His glories all over the world, although He alone is quite competent to perform this task. Even though the Supreme Personality of Godhead is endowed with all possessions and is self-sufficient, He depends on His devotees. Therefore the relationship of the Lord with His devotees is extremely confidential. Only the devotee can perceive how the Lord, although full in Himself, depends on His devotee for some particular work. This is explained in Bhagavad-gītā (11.33) , where the Lord tells Arjuna, nimitta-mātraṁ bhava savyasācin: “O Arjuna, merely be an instrument in the fight.” Lord Kṛṣṇa had the competence to win the Battle of Kurukṣetra, but nonetheless He induced His devotee Arjuna to fight and become the cause of victory. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu was quite competent enough to spread His name and mission all over the world, but still He depended upon His devotee to do this work. Considering all these points, the most important aspect of the Supreme Lord’s self-sufficiency is that He depends on His devotees. This is called His causeless mercy. The devotee who has perceived this causeless mercy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead by realization can understand the master and the servant.

Just as you are endowed with mercy, by which your powers are hidden, so you are situated as the Supreme Lord, worthy of worship, by being endowed with the śakti of Mahā-lakṣmī, the śakti of independence, the śakti of wealth, all strength and other qualities. By your mercy, everything happens. Just as you are endowed with mercy, you are the Lord because of being endowed with other powers. The meaning is this. You are served (juṣṭaḥ) by your kṛpā-śakti. You wait for the tulasī leaf offered by the devotee. Thus you are not independent. You ask the devotee “Please give me something to eat, because I am hungry today.” Thus you are not full in your desires. You say to a devotee in his dream, “My house and garden are worn out. Where will I play?” Thus you are without wealth. Though you have all powers of yoga, bound by the ropes of prema of the devotee, you cannot go anywhere. Thus you do not have all siddhis. By your power as Mahā-lakṣmī (bhūtyā), by your power of complete independence (tejasā), by your power of great wealth (mahimnā), by your strength (ojasā), and all other qualities (such as having all your statements come true), you remain independent and full in your own desires in this world. You alone are the Supreme Lord, the master worthy of worship.

[After profusely offering obeisances unto Lord Viṣṇu, the devotee should offer respectful obeisances unto mother Lakṣmī, the goddess of fortune, and pray as follows.] O wife of Lord Viṣṇu, O internal energy of Lord Viṣṇu, you are as good as Lord Viṣṇu Himself, for you have all of His qualities and opulences. O goddess of fortune, please be kind to me. O mother of the entire world, I offer my respectful obeisances unto you.

The Lord has multifarious potencies ( parāsya śaktir vividhaiva śrūyate ). Since mother Lakṣmī, the goddess of fortune, is the Lord’s very precious potency, she is addressed here as mahā-māye. The word māyā means śakti. Lord Viṣṇu, the Supreme, cannot exhibit His power everywhere without His principal energy. It is said, śakti śaktimān abheda: the power and the powerful are identical. Therefore mother Lakṣmī, the goddess of fortune, is the constant companion of Lord Viṣṇu; they remain together constantly. One cannot keep Lakṣmī in one’s home without Lord Viṣṇu. To think that one can do so is very dangerous. To keep Lakṣmī, or the riches of the Lord, without the service of the Lord is always dangerous, for then Lakṣmī becomes the illusory energy. With Lord Viṣṇu, however, Lakṣmī is the spiritual energy.

If one desires all opulences, his duty is to daily worship Lord Viṣṇu with His wife, Lakṣmī. With great devotion one should worship Him according to the above-mentioned process. Lord Viṣṇu and the goddess of fortune are an immensely powerful combination. They are the bestowers of all benedictions and the sources of all good fortune. Therefore the duty of everyone is to worship Lakṣmī-Nārāyaṇa.

Lakṣmī-Nārāyaṇa — Lord Viṣṇu and mother Lakṣmī — are always situated in everyone’s heart ( īśvaraḥ sarva-bhūtānāṁ hṛd-deśe ’rjuna tiṣṭhati ). However, because nondevotees do not realize that Lord Viṣṇu stays with His eternal consort, Lakṣmī, within the hearts of all living entities, they are not endowed with the opulence of Lord Viṣṇu. Unscrupulous men sometimes address a poor man as daridra-nārāyaṇa, or “poor Nārāyaṇa.” This is most unscientific. Lord Viṣṇu and Lakṣmī are always situated in everyone’s heart, but this does not mean that everyone is Nārāyaṇa, especially not those in poverty. This is a most abominable term to use in connection with Nārāyaṇa. Nārāyaṇa never becomes poor, and therefore He can never be called daridra-nārāyaṇa. Nārāyaṇa is certainly situated in everyone’s heart, but He is neither poor nor rich. Only unscrupulous persons who do not know the opulence of Nārāyaṇa try to afflict Him with poverty.

Mother Lakṣmī, who is here, is the reservoir of all spiritual qualities, whereas You manifest and enjoy all these qualities. Indeed, You are actually the enjoyer of everything. You live as the Supersoul of all living entities, and the goddess of fortune is the form of their bodies, senses and minds. She also has a holy name and form, whereas You are the support of all such names and forms and the cause for their manifestation.

Madhvācārya, the ācārya of the Tattvavādīs, has described this verse in the following way: “Viṣṇu is described as yajṣa personified, and mother Lakṣmī is described as spiritual activities and the original form of worship. In fact, they represent spiritual activities and the Supersoul of all yajṣa. Lord Viṣṇu is the Supersoul even of Lakṣmīdevī, but no one can be the Supersoul of Lord Viṣṇu, for Lord Viṣṇu Himself is the spiritual Supersoul of everyone.”

According to Madhvācārya, there are two tattvas, or factors. One is independent, and the other is dependent. The first tattva is the Supreme Lord, Viṣṇu, and the second is the jīva-tattva. Lakṣmīdevī, being dependent on Lord Viṣṇu, is sometimes counted among the jīvas. The Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇavas, however, describe Lakṣmīdevī in accordance with the following two verses from the Prameya-ratnāvalī of Baladeva Vidyābhūṣaṇa. The first verse is a quotation from the Viṣṇu Purāṇa.

nityaiva sā jagan-mātā viṣṇoḥ śrīr anapāyinī yathā sarva-gato viṣṇus tathaiveyaṁ dvijottama

viṣṇoḥ syuḥ śaktayas tisras tāsu yā kīrtitā parā saiva śrīs tad-abhinneti prāha śiṣyān prabhur mahān

“O best of the brāhmaṇas, Lakṣmījī is the constant companion of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Viṣṇu, and therefore she is called anapāyinī. She is the mother of all creation. As Lord Viṣṇu is all-pervading, His spiritual potency, mother Lakṣmī, is also all-pervading. Lord Viṣṇu has three principal potencies — internal, external and marginal. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu has accepted parā-śakti, the spiritual energy of the Lord, as being identical with the Lord. Thus she is also included in the independent viṣṇu-tattva. ”

In the Kānti-mālā commentary on the Prameya-ratnāvalī there is this statement: nanu kvacit nitya-mukta jīvatvaṁ lakṣmyāḥ svīkṛtaṁ, tatrāha-prāheti; nityaiveti padye sarva-vyāpti-kathanena kalākāṣṭhety ādi-padya-dvaye, śuddho ’pīty uktā ca mahāprabhunā svaśiṣyān prati lakṣmyā bhagavad-advaitam upadiṣṭam; kvacid yat tasyās tu dvaitam uktaṁ, tat tu tad-āviṣṭa-nitya-mukta jīvam ādāya saṅgatamas tu. “Although some authoritative Vaiṣṇava disciplic successions count the goddess of fortune among the ever-liberated living entities ( jīvas ) in Vaikuṇṭha, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, in accordance with the statement in the Viṣṇu Purāṇa, has described Lakṣmī as being identical with the viṣṇu-tattva. The correct conclusion is that the descriptions of Lakṣmī as being different from Viṣṇu are stated when an eternally liberated living entity is imbued with the quality of Lakṣmī; they do not pertain to mother Lakṣmī, the eternal consort of Lord Viṣṇu.”

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Lakṣmī is the reservoir of all qualities, whereas you manifest and enjoy all these qualities. Between the husband and wife, one person is sufficient to execute this devotional service. Because of their good relationship, both of them will enjoy the result. Therefore if the wife is unable to execute this process, the husband should carefully do so, and the faithful wife will share the result.

The relationship between husband and wife is firmly established when the wife is faithful and the husband sincere. Then even if the wife, being weaker, is unable to execute devotional service with her husband, if she is chaste and sincere she shares half of her husband’s activities.

One should accept this viṣṇu-vrata, which is a vow in devotional service, and should not deviate from its execution to engage in anything else. By offering the remnants of prasāda, flower garlands, sandalwood pulp and ornaments, one should daily worship the brāhmaṇas and worship women who peacefully live with their husbands and children. Every day the wife must continue following the regulative principles to worship Lord Viṣṇu with great devotion. Thereafter, Lord Viṣṇu should be laid in His bed, and then one should take prasāda. In this way, husband and wife will be purified and will have all their desires fulfilled.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
One should execute the vow for Viṣṇu and should not deviate from it for any reason. With devotion, one should daily worship women with living husbands and brāhmaṇas by means of garlands, scents, food and ornaments used in the worship. Fixed in the rules of worship, placing the Lord to rest, one should divide the offerings to the Lord and then eat, for purifying the mind in order to fulfill one’s desires. Na vihanyāt means one should not break the vow. Agrataḥ means “dividing up the remnants properly.” The ablative can be used to express a missing participle.

The chaste wife, after passing one year doing this worship, should fast on the full-moon day in the month of Kārttika [October-November]. Carame ahani means the full moon. [Note: Since the vow starts after the dark moon of the following month (Mārgaśira), during the waxing phase of the moon, and the vow ends on the full moon of Kārttika month, the vow does not last a full year, but would be two weeks short. Only in the case of adding an extra Puruṣottama month would there be over a full year’s vow. ]

If this vow or ritualistic ceremony is observed according to the description of śāstra, even in this life a man will be able to achieve all the benedictions he desires from the Lord. A wife who performs this ritualistic ceremony will surely receive good fortune, opulence, sons, a long-living husband, a good reputation and a good home.

In Bengal even today if a woman lives for a long time with her husband, she is considered very fortunate. A woman generally desires a good husband, good children, a good home, prosperity, opulence and so on. As recommended in this verse, a woman will receive all these desirable benedictions, and a man will also be able to receive all benedictions, from the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Thus by performing this particular type of vrata, a man and a woman in Kṛṣṇa consciousness will be happy in this material world, and because of being Kṛṣṇa conscious they will be promoted to the spiritual world.

A wife who performs this vow will receive good fortune, wealth, sons, a long-living husband, a good reputation and a good home. The woman will obtain a husband who lives (jīva-patim).

If an unmarried girl observes this vrata, she will be able to get a very good husband. If a woman who is avīrā — who has no husband or son — executes this ritualistic ceremony, she can be promoted to the spiritual world. A woman whose children have died after birth can get a child with a long duration of life and also become very fortunate in possessing wealth. If a woman is unfortunate she will become fortunate, and if ugly she will become beautiful. By observing this vrata, a diseased man can gain relief from his disease and have an able body with which to work. If one recites this narration while offering oblations to the pitās and demigods, especially during the śrāddha ceremony, the demigods and inhabitants of Pitṛloka will be extremely pleased with him and bestow upon him the fulfillment of all desires. After one performs this ritualistic ceremony, Lord Viṣṇu and His wife, mother Lakṣmī, the goddess of fortune, are very pleased with him. O King Parīkṣit, now I have completely described how Diti performed this ceremony and had good children — the Maruts — and a happy life. I have tried to explain this to you as elaborately as possible.

Thus end the Bhaktivedanta purports of the Sixth Canto, Nineteenth Chapter, of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, entitled “Performing the Puṁsavana Ritualistic Ceremony.”

END OF THE SIXTH CANTO

Translation
If an unmarried girl observes this vow, she will get a good husband. Woman who has no husband or son can be promoted to the spiritual world. A woman whose children have died after birth can get a child with a long life and also possess wealth. A woman who is unfortunate will become fortunate and an ugly woman will become beautiful. A diseased man can gain relief from special diseases and obtain a body with functioning senses. If one recites this narration during the śrāddha ceremony, the devatās and inhabitants of Pitṛloka will be extremely pleased. The devatās, Pitṛs and Viṣṇu, being pleased, will bestow upon him all desires. O King Parīkṣit! I have completely described the great vow of Diti and the great, virtuous birth of the Maruts. Avīrā means a woman without a husband or sons. A woman whose son has died will have a son who lives and also become wealth. A man who is diseased will be freed of the particular disease and receive a body capable of using the senses. Abhyudaye means at śrāddha ceremony. They and Viṣṇu (huta-bhuk) will also be pleased (tuṣṭāḥ). The commentary Śārātha-darśinī on Nineteenth Chapter of the Sixth Canto has been completed to give pleasure to the hearts of the devotees in accordance with the views of the ācāryas. The devotees, flowing with mercy, continuously chanting the names of Kṛṣṇa, should tolerate my chattering, though I am approaching death, having been destroyed by fever from the three doṣas. I have completed the commentary on the Sixth Canto on the ninth lunar day of the waxing moon of Vaiśakha month, on Wednesday, at the base of a desire tree moist with drops of water from the waves of the shining Yamunā River. The Supreme Lord Is Equal to Everyone 7.1 Summary In this chapter, in response to a question by Mahārāja Parīkṣit, Śukadeva Gosvāmī gives his conclusions concerning how the Supreme Personality of Godhead, although the Supersoul, friend and protector of everyone, killed the Daityas, the demons, for the sake of Indra, the King of heaven. In his statements, he totally refutes the arguments of people in general who accuse the Supreme Lord of partiality. Śukadeva Gosvāmī proves that because the body of the conditioned soul is infected by the three qualities of nature, dualities arise such as enmity and friendship, attachment and detachment. For the Supreme Personality of Godhead, however, there are no such dualities. Even eternal time cannot control the activities of the Lord. Eternal time is created by the Lord, and it acts under His control. The Supreme Personality of Godhead, therefore, is always transcendental to the influence of the modes of nature, māyā, the Lord's external energy, which acts in creation and annihilation. Thus all the demons killed by the Supreme Lord attain salvation immediately. The second question raised by Parīkṣit Mahārāja concerns how Śiśupāla, although inimical toward Kṛṣṇa from his very childhood and always blaspheming Kṛṣṇa, attained salvation in oneness when Kṛṣṇa killed him. Śukadeva Gosvāmī explains that because of their offenses at the feet of devotees, two attendants of the Lord in Vaikuṇṭha named Jaya and Vijaya became Hiraṇyakaśipu and Hiraṇyākṣa in Satya-yuga, Rāvaṇa and Kumbhakarṇa in the next yuga, Tretā-yuga, and Śiśupāla and Dantavakra at the end of Dvāpara-yuga. Because of their fruitive acts, Jaya and Vijaya agreed to become the Lord's enemies, and when killed in that mentality, they attained salvation in oneness. Thus even if one thinks of the Supreme Personality of Godhead in envy, he attains salvation. What then is to be said of devotees who always engage in the Lord's service with love and faith?
