Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.88.12
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
śāpa-prasādayoḥ
—
in cursing and showing favor
Contiguous (śāpa + prasādayoḥ). Two powers paired. The Bhāgavatam refuses sentimentality: the same lord who blesses also curses. Speed in one implies speed in the other.
-
īśāḥ
—
capable lords
Plural. Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Śiva are all īśas — but the chapter ranks them. Gauḍīyas read: īśatva is shared, paramatva is Viṣṇu's alone.
-
sadyaḥ śāpa-prasādaḥ
—
whose curse and benediction are immediate
Contiguous (sadyaḥ + śāpa-prasādaḥ). Sadyas = same day, at once. The very speed Vṛkāsura will exploit. The verse marks this speed as a defect, not a virtue.
-
aṅga
—
my dear (King)
Tender vocative — Śuka softening hard doctrine for his disciple. Gauḍīya guru-pattern: severity of teaching, sweetness of address.
-
acyutaḥ
—
the infallible Lord (Viṣṇu)
A-cyuta — He who never falls. The structural antonym of sadyaḥ-śāpa-prasādaḥ: Acyuta does not slip into boon or curse on impulse. His tempo is His perfection.
The Lord has said the following. The devatās are easily satisfied without considering the consequences of giving. All perfection arises however by the strength of surrender to the Lord. The Lord is not easily worshipped but considers very well the consequences in giving. And the Lord always accepts those who take shelter of him. Śukadeva will now tell a story to illustrate this. Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Śiva, and others like Indra are capable of giving curses or giving benedictions. O king (aṅga)! This is true. The Lord who does not deviate from his qualities does not readily curse and bless.
A famous story is told to show the superiority of Viṣṇu over Śiva. They are capable (īśāḥ) of cursing or blessing with benedictions. Or they are the masters of cursing and blessing. Ādayaḥ indicates Indra and others. O king (aṅga)! This is true. The Lord, who never fails in his unlimited qualities like compassion and tolerance, is not like the other two.
A junior officer can sign a permit fast because he barely checks the application; the chief, who knows what the permit unleashes, takes longer. Brahmā and Śiva sign in haste. Acyuta — He-who-never-falls — never signs anything He must later regret.
