  • vatsalaḥ — affectionate (like to a calf)
From vatsa (calf). The same root word that names Yaśodā's vātsalya-rasa toward Kṛṣṇa — here applied to a father toward his daughter. The Gauḍīya web of vātsalya is wider than parent-to-Lord: it is any tender protective love bent toward the smaller one.
  • duhitṛ — to the daughter
Duhitṛ — daughter, etymologically 'milker', the one who milks the family cows. The word places Lakṣmaṇā in the household's normal economy; her father's vātsalya for her is the same as for any beloved child.
  • matam — mentality, inner intention
From √man (to think). Bṛhatsena knew her mata — her settled intention. Gauḍīya reading: a true mata for Kṛṣṇa cannot be hidden long; even external relatives perceive it. The verse models the proper response — arrangement, not opposition.
  • bṛhatsenaḥ iti khyātaḥ — known as Bṛhatsena
Bṛhat (great) + sena (army) + iti khyātaḥ (so renowned). Lakṣmaṇā's father is a great king. The verse pauses to name him because the test he is about to design (verse 19's hidden fish) requires both his army and his ingenuity.
  • sādhvi — O saintly lady
Vocative of sādhvī. Lakṣmaṇā addresses Draupadī as fellow sādhvī — the chapter is a sister-to-sister exchange. The diminutive of formality marks the intimacy of these conversations.
My father, Bṛhatsena, was by nature compassionate to his daughter, and knowing how I felt, O saintly lady, he arranged to fulfill my desire.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
My father, Bṛhatsena, was by nature compassionate to his daughter, and knowing how I felt, O saintly lady, he arranged to fulfill my desire.
Commentary

Just a fish was made with a desire to get Arjuna as your husband( or which was pierced by arjuna’ arrow, as (parthesv apakrta) in seen in some texts), in my case also a fish was made. But the could not Arjuna also pierce this fish? This fish, which was moving very quickly, could only be seen by looking at it as a reflection in a pot of water placed at the bottom of the pole. It could not be seen by looking up. Only by looking down could one aim upwards. It could thus not be pierced by anyone except Krsna. The fish made by your father, though covered, could be aimed at by looking upwards following the pole, and thus could be pierced by the expert marksman Arjuna.

Commentary

Matam means her decision.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Matam means her desire. O chaste lady! You would also have such desires. Just as your father was affectionate to you because you were chaste, so my father was affectionate to him. Thus he arranged to fulfill my desire.

A father who can read his daughter's heart does not need to be told. Bṛhatsena saw where Lakṣmaṇā's mind had gone and quietly built the bridge — arranged a svayaṁvara whose test only Kṛṣṇa could pass. Vatsala fathers do this in every yuga: align the world's machinery so the heart's already-made choice can stand publicly.
