  • daiva-krīḍanakān — the playthings of fate
Compound: daiva (Providence) + krīḍanakān (toys, accusative plural). Vasudeva names humanity as the Lord's playthings — līlā-vibhūti. Gauḍīyas read this with humility: the bhakta consents to be His toy.
  • īśasya — under the Supreme Lord's control
Compound: īśasya (of the Lord, genitive) + vaśe (locative of vaśa, control). Theological centre-pillar — every act, whether self-initiated or other-impelled, falls within the Lord's vaśa. Sambandha begins here.
  • kurute kāryate — acts on his own or is made to act
Active vs. causative passive of √kṛ. Both modes of action are equally under īśa-vaśa. Gauḍīyas align with this against any doctrine of autonomous free will — and against any doctrine of merely mechanical determinism. Bhagavān's vaśa is personal and loving.
  • amba — my dear sister (mother-form)
Vocative of ambā — mother. Vasudeva addresses his sister with the maternal tenderness Vraja uses for Yaśodā. Tenderness softens the doctrinal correction he is about to deliver.
Śrī Vasudeva said: Dear sister, please do not be angry with us. We are only ordinary men, playthings of fate. Indeed, whether a person acts on his own or is forced by others, he is always under the Supreme Lord’s control.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Śrī Vasudeva said: Dear sister, please do not be angry with us. We are only ordinary men, playthings of fate. Indeed, whether a person acts on his own or is forced by others, he is always under the Supreme Lord's control.
Commentary

"O most dear one (amba), younger sister! Do not find fault in us who are like play things in the hands of fate. Under the control of the Lord, all people act with so-called independence, and are made to act without choice."

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

O mother (amba)! He says this out of affection for her as a younger sister. Sometimes iśa-krīdāna-kātarān (men who suffer by the will of the Lord) is seen instead of daiva-krīḍanakam narān (men who are playthings of fate). As men (narān) we have little power compared to devatās and others. We are not independent. Do not hate us because (hi) all (atha) people who perform acts independently or have acts done to them by others are actually engaged in this under the control of the Supreme Lord. We are dependent. He makes even those who act perform their actions in that particular way. Citsukha has roga-jarā-maraṇādi dharmiṇo vā in the first line.

A chess-piece may resist or comply, but it is moved either way. Vasudeva tells Kuntī plainly: we are not the agents we imagine; the Lord's hand is on every move. The complaint is true but its addressee is wrong.
