  • gopa - gokula - nandanaḥ — the darling of the cowherds and Gokula
Triple compound: gopa (cowherd) + gokula (the cow-village Gokula) + nandana (the delight, the son, the giver of joy). Three-fold sambandha-identity in one word: He belongs to the gopas as their child, to Gokula as its joy, and to Nanda (whose name shares the same nand-root) as son.
  • śreyaḥ — the most auspicious
Śreyas — the highest good, as distinct from preyas (the immediately pleasant). Kaṭha Upaniṣad's classical contrast. Kṛṣṇa is here named śreyaḥ-source — not pleasure-source — preventing a hedonic misreading of His Vraja-līlā.
  • sarva - durgāṇi — all kinds of miserable conditions, all fortresses (of distress)
Sarva (all) + durga (impassable, fort, calamity). Durgā Herself is named from this root. Every fortified obstacle — material, mental, demonic — yields when Kṛṣṇa is the crossing-agent. Devotees do not storm the fort; they walk past it on His arm.
  • añjaḥ — easily, directly
Adverb — 'straight, without detour'. Gauḍīyas pair this with the Bhāgavatam's repeated promise that bhakti, unlike jñāna or yoga, is añjasā — directly delivering. No long preliminary paths required.
  • tariṣyatha — you will overcome
Future of √tṛ (to cross over). The same root behind tīrtha (crossing-place) and avatāra (descent for crossing). Verse-promise: with Kṛṣṇa in your house, you are already at the tīrtha-ghāṭa.
To increase the transcendental bliss of the cowherd men of Gokula, this child will always act auspiciously for you. And by His grace only, you will surpass all difficulties.

For the cowherd men and the cows, Kṛṣṇa is the supreme friend. Therefore He is worshiped by the prayer namo brahmaṇya-devāya go-brāhmaṇa-hitāya ca. His pastimes in Gokula, His dhāma, are always favorable to the brāhmaṇas and the cows. His first business is to give all comfort to the cows and the brāhmaṇas. In fact, comfort for the brāhmaṇas is secondary, and comfort for the cows is His first concern. Because of His presence, all people would overcome all difficulties and always be situated in transcendental bliss.

Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
To increase the transcendental bliss of the cowherd men of Gokula, this child will always act auspiciously for you. And by His grace only, you will surpass all difficulties.
Commentary

"He will produce (adhasyat) benefit, and give joy (nandana) for the cowherds and groups of cows (go kula)." Or gopa gokula nandana can refer to Krsna’s becoming the son (nandana) of all the cowherds and cows by his expansions during the Brahma mohana pastime. Or gopa can here be taken as a vocative address to Nanda Maharaj, O cowherd. "Very easily or happily, by him, you will cross over all obstacles. Whenever difficulties arise, your son, who is invested with the powers of Narayana will deliver you. You should therefore take shelter of him."

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

This child will give bliss to the all the cowherds of Gokula. That is his nature. And by action he will do what is most beneficial for the people of Vraja in this life and the next. Because of Kṛṣṇa you will easily cross over all disturbances from Kaṁsa and others.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

This child will give bliss to the all the cowherds of Gokula. That is the nature of this avatāra. Or king (gopa)! Garga speaks with respect to Nanda. Or O protector of the earth (gopa)! The earth is protected by you. And by action this child will do what is most beneficial for the people of Vraja in this life and the next, or for all devotees in general. Or he will act beneficially for all your people. He will give joy to all of Gokula. And by action he will do what is most beneficial for the people of Vraja in this life and the next.

Related verses
Kṛṣṇa, the darling of Gokula, personally carries His devotees across every difficulty — take shelter of Him and fear nothing today.
Practical Applications
  • Name one 'durga' (difficulty) you're carrying alone right now and consciously hand it to Kṛṣṇa in your morning prayer, asking Him to ferry you across.
  • Perform one act of seva for cows or brāhmaṇas today — donate, protect, feed, or honor them — knowing Kṛṣṇa's first concern is their welfare.
  • When fear or worry arises, repeat 'anena sarva-durgāṇi' and refuse to act from anxiety; act instead from shelter in the gopa-gokula-nandanaḥ.

A father standing in the dark river holds his children's hands; they wade through any current because the hand is His. Kṛṣṇa, the gopa-gokula-nandanaḥ, is the hand in the current — sarva-durgāṇi (every fortress of distress) is crossed not by your swimming but by His grip.

Gajendra calls out and Viṣṇu comes

Pinned by a crocodile in the lake, the elephant king Gajendra — at the end of his own strength — lifted a lotus and cried: 'O Lord, You alone can save me' (SB 8.3). Viṣṇu descended on Garuḍa's back and severed the jaws.

The verse's promise anena sarva-durgāṇi yūyam añjas tariṣyatha — 'by Him you will easily cross all difficulties' — is the Gajendra-story compressed. Kṛṣṇa as gopa-gokula-nandanaḥ does for Vraja what Viṣṇu did for the elephant.
