Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.8.11
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
samprārthitaḥ
—
being eagerly requested
Sam (fully) + prārthita (requested). Not casual asking — full prayer. Vaiṣṇava-protocol: instructions of weight are released to one who asks with prārthanā, not to a passive listener (cf. Gītā 4.34: paripraśna).
-
vipraḥ
—
the brāhmaṇa (Garga Muni)
Vipra — 'one who trembles (with inspiration)', a learned brāhmaṇa. Different connotation from brāhmaṇa-as-class: vipra emphasizes the Veda-inspired voice. The nāma-karaṇa proceeds from such inspired speech.
-
sva - cikīrṣitam eva
—
exactly what he himself desired to do
Sva (own) + cikīrṣita (desire to do, desiderative of √kṛ) + eva (precisely). The verse stresses that Garga's heart was already set on this work; Nanda's request only synchronized the outer with the inner. Gauḍīyas read this as the līlā-quality of all Vaiṣṇava service: the wish arises in the heart before the call comes.
-
nāma - karaṇam
—
the name-giving ceremony
Nāma (name) + karaṇa (the doing). Of the ten saṁskāras, nāma-karaṇa establishes the soul's verbal identity. For Vaiṣṇavas the name itself is non-different from the named — so naming Kṛṣṇa here is no ordinary rite; the verse is the founding scene of harināma in human history.
-
gūḍhaḥ
—
confidentially
From √guh (to hide). The same root yields guhya (secret) and guhā (cave, heart). Gauḍīyas link: the highest name-mantras are guhyatama (BG 18.64); Garga's gūḍha nāma-karaṇa rhymes with that confidentiality.
-
rahasi
—
in a secluded place
Locative of rahas; repeats from 10.8.10. Twice underlined: the most sacred bhakti-acts ripen in seclusion. Compare the Six Gosvāmīs' bhajana-kuṭīrs in Vraja's groves.
Garga actually desired to perform that one saṁskāra unseen by anyone, even the people of Vraja. “Since Garga was aware that Kṛṣṇa was the Lord why did he not have some hesitation to perform such a ceremony for the Lord?” The pastimes of the two children on earth which were for the benefit of the people and for giving joy of his devotees were bewildering even to those who knew that Kṛṣṇa was the Supreme Lord. One should also understand that when the two boys were brought, Garga felt great joy and gave them blessings.
Garga actually desired to perform that one saṁskāra unseen by anyone, even the people of Vraja. In this way (evam) being urgently requested (samprārthitaḥ) he performed the name ceremony with the preliminary rites of dīkṣā (tat). Or tat indicates a reference to something secret. Tat also indicates that the ceremony was the most important and auspicious. Garga did the ceremony secretly in a solitary place (rahasi). To give Nanda joy, the greatness of his son should be told by Garga. But because of Nanda’s great affection, he would not see Kṛṣṇa as the Lord. Since others were not at that level of affection, by hearing of Kṛṣṇa’s greatness, they would see Kṛṣṇa as the Lord. This would interrupt their affection. Thus he spoke in a solitary place. Or he did it secretly out of fear of Kaṁṣa. Fearing a decrease in Nanda’s affection, he did not directly indicate Kṛṣṇa’s powers to Nanda. He indicated that Kṛṣnā was a great person equal to Nārāyaṇa, doing astonishing activities. “Since Garga was aware that Kṛṣṇa was the Lord, why did he not have some hesitation to perform such a ceremony for the Lord?” The pastimes of the two children (bālayoḥ) on earth were for the benefit of the people and for giving joy of his devotees. Such infant pastimes should be sought by his devotees.

- Identify one act of seva you have already been wanting to do, and today say yes the moment a sincere request for it arrives — do not stage it for an audience.
- Choose a solitary, unadvertised setting (rahasi) for your most important spiritual work today — japa, study, or offering — and refuse the urge to publicize it.
- Notice when someone approaches you for help that aligns with your sva-dharma, and treat their request as Kṛṣṇa's arrangement rather than an interruption.
A craftsman has been carrying the chisel and the design in his cloth for years, waiting; the patron's request is only the door swinging open. Garga had long desired this nāma-karaṇa for Kṛṣṇa; Nanda's request released what was already poised — Kṛṣṇa's līlā arranges the meeting, not the seeker.
Sanātana had renounced his minister's post under the Sultan and walked toward Vṛndāvana with the question burning: who am I, what is my duty, what is the goal? At Prayāga he met Caitanya Mahāprabhu, and the Lord — who had been waiting for him — poured out the sambandha-abhidheya-prayojana teachings for two months (CC Madhya 20–23).
The verse's sva-cikīrṣitam eva — 'precisely what he himself desired to do' — is exactly the mood of that meeting. When sincere request meets a waiting heart, Kṛṣṇa is the silent third Person of the encounter.
