Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.65.2
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
pariṣvaktaḥ
—
embraced
Pari (around) + √svaj (to embrace). Bhagavān permits Himself to be encircled by His devotees' arms — the Lord whom no boundary can contain consents to be bounded by vātsalya.
-
utkaṇṭhaiḥ
—
by those who had been in anxiety
Same root as Balarāma's own utkaṇṭhā in v. 1 — the longing is mutual. Gauḍīya doctrine: prema is reciprocal; Bhagavān's craving for the devotee matches the devotee's craving for Him.
-
gopībhiḥ
—
by the cowherd women
The Vraja-gopīs — for Gauḍīyas the highest exemplars of mādhurya-rasa. Here they embrace Balarāma in vātsalya-mixed-sakhya mode; the same women whose mood toward Kṛṣṇa is mādhurya hold Balarāma as elder brother.
-
abhivādya
—
offering respects
Absolutive of abhi-√vad. Even Bhagavān bows to Nanda and Yaśodā — He preserves the form of son-to-parent. Gauḍīyas cite such moments as proof that bhakti does not collapse role; mādhurya-līlā keeps its grammar.
-
āśīrbhiḥ
—
with prayers
Benedictions, blessings (instrumental plural). The parents bless Bhagavān — reversing the ordinary order in which devotees seek the Lord's blessing. Vātsalya-rasa structurally inverts hierarchy.
Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī gives the following verse regarding this situation: nityānanda-svarūpo ’pi prema-tapto vrajaukasām yayau kṛṣṇam api tyaktvā yas taṁ rāmaṁ muhuḥ stumaḥ “Let us repeatedly glorify Lord Balarāma. Although He is the original personality of eternal bliss, Nityānanda, He felt pained by His love for the residents of Vraja, and thus He went to see them, even at the cost of leaving Lord Kṛṣṇa.”
I praise again and again, Balrama who, though situated in eternal bliss, gave up even Krsna and went to Vraja because of the pain of separation. He was embraced by elder gopis the age of his mother. He greeted his parents, and they greeted him with words of blessing according to their parental love.
This verse describes their exchange of feelings. They embraced deeply with all their limbs, with tears and hairs standing on end because of their longing held for an extensive period. First he responded to his parents love appropriately. Within Vraja he met with the various cowherds, cowherd women, friends, elders, and also the priests. First meeting his parents he greeted them, and was embraced by them and received their blessings.
He was embraced tightly (pari), even by the gopīs (eva), and by servants and priests (ca), because they suffered for a long time. Because of long separation and confusion they all embraced him. Then the proper behavior is described. He greeted his parents, since they thought of him as their son and he also thought of them as his parents.
When a long-lost child returns, the parents do not first ask 'how are You,' they simply touch — hands on shoulders, foreheads to chest, tears doing the talking. Bhakti in Vraja is somatic before it is verbal; the embrace precedes the prayer.
