  • vṛṣṇibhiḥ — by the Vṛṣṇis
The Vṛṣṇi clan — the branch of Yadus from which Vasudeva and Kṛṣṇa take birth. To be on the Vṛṣṇi side is, in Bhāgavata reckoning, to be on Kṛṣṇa's side; the genealogy is a vehicle for prema.
  • jaya-kāṅkṣibhiḥ — who were eager for victory
Jaya (victory) + kāṅkṣin (longing). The same word-pair appears in the Bhagavad-gītā's first verses; here, however, the longing for victory is yoked to Kṛṣṇa's cause, not against it (cf. BG 1.32 where Arjuna says he does NOT want victory).
  • vimukhāḥ — discouraged / face-turned-away
Vi (away) + mukha (face). The exact opposite of sammukha (last verse). Gauḍīyas treat vimukhatā toward Kṛṣṇa as the constituting condition of māyā; here it is dramatized — the demons literally turn their faces from Him.
  • rājānaḥ — the kings
Plural of rājan. Throughout Canto 10 the rājan-class is portrayed as opposing or worshipping Kṛṣṇa — there is no neutral king. Even Parīkṣit, the rājan to whom Śuka speaks, must choose.
Seeing their armies being struck down by the Vṛṣṇis, who were eager for victory, the kings headed by Jarāsandha were discouraged and left the battlefield.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Seeing their armies being struck down by the Vṛṣṇis, who were eager for victory, the kings headed by Jarāsandha were discouraged and left the battlefield.
Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Instead of jaya-kāṅgkṣibhiḥ sometimes jayakāśibhiḥ is seen. This means “behaving like a victor.”

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

The Yadus desired victory or manifested victory, or manifested Kṛṣṇa (jaya). They were the best of devotees.

Related verses

Like jackals who circled a kill but slink away when the lion turns, Jarāsandha and his rank withdraw — not because their numbers shrank but because the protection of Kṛṣṇa cannot be out-counted. Vimukha — face turned away — is exactly the opposite of sammukhya, the devotee's posture.
