Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.53.34
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
śrī - mat
—
opulent
Compound: śrī (splendor, Lakṣmī) + -mat (possessing). The accommodations are 'possessed of śrī' — and Rukmiṇī, who is Lakṣmī, is about to leave the city for these very accommodations. The word foreshadows.
-
ātithyam
—
hospitality
From atithi (guest, literally 'one without a fixed time of arrival'). Atithi-sevā is one of the pañca-mahā-yajñas. Gauḍīyas note: hospitality to Bhagavān as guest is an eternal possibility — Caitanya-caritāmṛta describes Sārvabhauma similarly hosting Mahāprabhu.
-
mahā - matiḥ
—
generous (literally: of great mind)
Compound: mahā (great) + mati (intelligence, mind). Bhīṣmaka is great-minded even if not great-discerning. Gauḍīyas distinguish mahā-mati (broad intelligence) from sumati (right intelligence); Bhīṣmaka has the former without the latter.
Bhismaka is described as generous (mahamatih) because he was contented in his heart, knowing that Krsna had come to marry his qualified daughter. Therefore he worshipped Krsna elaborately.
With devotion he offered (upākalpya) them palaces with furnishings and enjoyments (śrīmat).
He offered accommodation with food, drinks, cloth, and ornaments (śrīmat) or with crystal pillars and unlimited beauty. He made special palaces for them and offered them as their servant or accepting them as his masters, or with all hospitality (sam). The followers were Gada, Satyaki, Uddhava and others. The four parts of the army were also there. He offered properly, with great devotion (yathā), with beds, water, food, milk products and butter.
A generous host of the Lord without recognizing the Lord — and the lodging built by his hands becomes a quiet Vaikuṇṭha-on-loan. Even when the heart has not yet recognized Kṛṣṇa, sevā performed bodily is not lost.
