  • varān — benedictions
Same word as verse 20. The demigods offered varas but withheld kaivalya; Kṛṣṇa offers varas with no withholding. The contrast between deva-vara and bhagavān-vara is structural in this chapter.
  • vṛṇīṣva — please choose
Imperative of √vṛ. The same form the demigods used in verse 20. Bhagavān's offer formally mirrors theirs but exceeds their scope — He can give what they could not.
  • rāja-ṛṣe — O saintly King
Compound: rāja + ṛṣi — a king who is also a seer. Mucukunda has earned both halves of the title. Gauḍīyas note that the rāja-ṛṣi category (Janaka, Yudhiṣṭhira, Pṛthu, Khaṭvāṅga, Mucukunda) is the Bhāgavata's preferred royal exemplar.
  • prasannaḥ — having satisfied
Past participle of pra-√sad — to be clear, gracious. The whole bhakti-purpose: making Bhagavān prasanna. From the Lord's side, prasāda flows; from the bhakta's side, prasanna-tā is the goal.
  • śocitum — to lament
Infinitive of √śuc — to grieve. The same root as 'aśocyān anvaśocas tvam' (Gītā 2.11). The Lord's prasanna-tā ends śoka — material lamentation. The Bhāgavata's promise to every devotee.
Now choose some benedictions from Me, O saintly King. I will fulfill all your desires. One who has satisfied Me need never again lament.

The ācāryas explain that we lament when we feel incomplete, when we have lost something or when we fail to achieve something desirable. One who has satisfied Kṛṣṇa and thus attained the Lord’s mercy will never be troubled in these ways. Lord Kṛṣṇa is the reservoir of all pleasure, and He enjoys sharing His spiritual bliss with all living beings. We need only cooperate with the Supreme Lord.

Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Now choose some benedictions from Me, O saintly King. I will fulfill all your desires. One who has satisfied Me need never again lament.
Commentary

The person who has satisfied me does not have to lament. The benedictions given by others are perishable, and therefore the benefactor laments when the boon disappears. But for one who surrenders to me, I give benedictions which are not perishable. Therefore he does not lament.

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

I will fulfill all desires suitable for a king and sage. Those who surrender to me, what to speak of those who are full of devotion will no longer lament. He hints that Mucukunda should not desire any other benediction than surrender.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

I will fulfill all desires suitable for a king and sage. Those who surrender to me, what to speak of those who are full of devotion, will no longer lament. Or he who attains the boon will no longer lament. Ask for happiness after this life as well, since you are a sage among kings. You are qualified for happiness in this life and the next since you are a king and a sage.

Related verses

The Lord offers a blank check: ask whatever you want. The verse is the chapter's test — what does a great devotee do when Bhagavān Himself opens the treasury? The next verses give Mucukunda's answer, the heart of the stuti.
