  • karaḥ — the tax
Kara: the tax-payment. The same word played on earlier (verse 19) for the annual dharmic obligation. Now it returns as a marker of completed duty — Nanda has discharged it; the visit's purpose is fulfilled. Vaiṣṇava economy: do what must be done, then move.
  • dṛṣṭāḥ-vayam ca — and we have been seen
Dṛṣṭa ('seen') + vayam ('we'). Vasudeva names the meeting itself as accomplished — the darśana has happened. Vaiṣṇava clarity: count the gifts received, do not stretch the visit beyond what is needed.
  • iha — in this place
Adverb of place. Iha is Mathurā — Kaṁsa's seat. Vasudeva is naming the danger geographically. The Vaiṣṇava warning is concrete, not abstract.
  • stheyam — should be staying
Future passive participle (gerundive) of √sthā. The grammar of obligation: 'you should not be staying.' A Vaiṣṇava friend speaks obligation directly when it matters; pleasantness does not override warning.
  • utpātāḥ ca — and disturbances, evil portents
Ud + pāta ('that which falls upward,' i.e., an unnatural sign). The technical word for ominous omens. Vasudeva is reading the situation as a kṣatriya does — the disturbances in Gokula will be more than ordinary mischief. He is right; Pūtanā and the demons are coming.
  • gokule — in Gokula
Locative. Gokula is named explicitly — the very place where Kṛṣṇa is now living and where the next chapters' demons will arrive. The Bhāgavatam plants the warning here so that Nanda's prompt departure in verse 32 will be heard as wisdom, not panic.
Vasudeva said to Nanda Mahārāja: Now, my dear brother, since you have paid the annual taxes to Kaṁsa and have also seen me, do not stay in this place for many days. It is better to return to Gokula, since I know that there may be some disturbances there.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Vasudeva said to Nanda Mahārāja: Now, my dear brother, since you have paid the annual taxes to Kaṁsa and have also seen me, do not stay in this place for many days. It is better to return to Gokula, since I know that there may be some disturbances there.
Commentary

After hearing this advice from Nanda, Vasudeva spoke what he had come to say (a warning ) : "Certainly (vai) you have paid the annual tax to the king. Do not stay here a long time (bahu titham). There are many disturbances in Gokula."

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Overjoyed since he understood from Nanda’s words that other people did not know that he had exchanged the children, Vasudeva tells the real purpose of his coming. The tax has been paid by you (vaḥ) and you have been seen me. Therefore you should not stay long near greedy Kaṁsa since you are well known for having great wealth. Some editions have vaḥ instead of vai. Thus vaḥ is repeated twice in the first line. He uses the plural (vaḥ) to indicate respect, or to indicate Nanda’s associates as well. He also uses the plural for himself (vayam) to indicate his respectful attitude on seeing Nanda. There is no fault of course in using the same word in different statements. Thus the meaning can also be “We who are yours (vaḥ) speak to you out of affection, since you want to stay here for some time: do not stay long in this city.” Viṣṇu Purāṇa says: datto hi vārṣikaḥ sarvo bhavadbhir nṛpateḥ karaḥ yad artham āgatās tasmād nātra stheyaṁ mahādhanaiḥ Having giving the yearly tax to the king, do not stay here with your wealth, since your purpose has been fulfilled. The rule for the formation of bahu-titham is bahu-pūga-gaṇa-saṅghasya tithuk. (Pāṇini 5.2.052) Vasudeva instills fear in Nanda to make him desire to return to Gokula quickly after sufficient satisfaction of his association.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Overjoyed since he understood from Nanda’s words that other people did not know that he had exchanged the children, Vasudeva tells the real purpose of his coming. Plural is used (vaḥ) to show respect or to indicate Nanda’s associates as well. He also uses the plural for himself (vayam) to indicate his respectful attitude on seeing Nanda. Repetition of vaḥ (instead of vai) is not a fault since it occurs in two separate sentences. Or if it is in the same sentence it can mean “Your (vaḥ) tax has been given. We who are yours (vaḥ) have seen you.” Or the tax has been paid by you (vaḥ). You should not say in the city for a long time. Viṣṇu Purāṇa says: datto hi vārṣikaḥ sarvo bhavadbhir nṛpateḥ karaḥ yad artham āgatās tasmād nātra stheyaṁ mahādhanaiḥ Having giving the yearly tax to the king, do not stay here with your wealth, since your purpose has been fulfilled. Vasudeva instills fear in Nanda to make him desire to return to Gokula quickly after sufficient satisfaction of his association. Vasudeva had achieved his goal of learning about his sons. Considering dangers, he now speaks to prevent Nanda from leaving Gokula, in order to protect his son, and to increase his attachment by various means. Though there are naturally no dangers because of a relationship with the Lord—and what to speak of Vraja which was directly the residence of the Lord, by the will of the Lord these dangers appeared in order to increase the affection of the devotees residing there for the Lord. This is for displaying a wealth of special pastimes glorifying the Lord, which generate bliss for all people. This comes clear later.

Once your duty in the world is discharged, return swiftly to where Kṛṣṇa-seva calls — don't linger where utpātas (disturbances) threaten the heart's home.
Practical Applications
  • Finish the worldly obligation in front of you today (the 'tax' you owe) cleanly and on time, then turn back without delay to your sādhana.
  • Notice where you are 'staying many days' in a place or company that pulls you from Kṛṣṇa-consciousness, and plan a concrete return to Gokula — your place of bhakti.
  • Speak to a fellow devotee today the way Vasudeva spoke to Nanda: warn them frankly of an utpāta you sense, out of real karuṇā for their spiritual life.

A friend who has seen a fire start in the next house does not waste the visit on long stories — he tells the host: go home now. Vasudeva, sensing what is coming in Gokula, cuts short the reunion and sends Nanda back. The love is in the urgency, not in the lingering.
