Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.36.31
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
mṛtyuḥ
—
(my) death
Mṛtyu — death. Kaṁsa accepts the prophecy verbatim. He will not deny it; he will only try to outmaneuver it. The Bhāgavatam's diagnosis: false confidence in one's own will against destined Bhagavān.
-
devaiḥ
—
by the demigods
The same devas whom Kaṁsa displaced from svarga. The Bhāgavatam frames the avatāra-purpose throughout this canto as paritrāṇa of these devas — a relief that arrives through the children of Vasudeva.
-
vaikuṇṭha - saṁśrayaiḥ
—
by those sheltered by Vaikuṇṭha (Viṣṇu)
Vaikuṇṭha (the place of no anxiety) + saṁśraya (taking refuge). Kaṁsa names the devotional doctrine — refuge in Vaikuṇṭha — as the operating principle behind the demigods' attack on him.
-
abhyupāyanaiḥ
—
with gifts of tribute
Abhi + upāyana (a gift offered with approach). The cowherds are to bring gifts — Kaṁsa wants the appearance of vassalage. The Bhāgavatam notes how a demon stages dharma's outer form to mask adharma's act.
My death ( the two boys) has been created inescapably by the devatas who take shelter of Visnu.
He states the purpose in two verses. Of the two one will kill me. What can I do, since death (one of them) has been sent by the devatās protected by Viṣṇu. Bring both of them, since the effort is the same. In order to make Akrūra go, Kaṁsa hides the fact that the two are actually non-different from Viṣṇu. Also bring Nanda and others. Kaṁsa feared that they would not come unprotected. His hidden, evil intention was also to cause problems for Nanda and the rest. They should also bring ghee and yogurt. In this way they would believe that the sacrifice for the bow would actually take place.
He admits aloud that the demigods, sheltered by Viṣṇu, have sent these boys as his death. Kaṁsa's intelligence is unimpaired; only his will is. He sees the whole picture and walks straight into it — vidveṣa-bhakti's dark mirror.
