  • mā bhaiṣṭa — do not fear
Aorist prohibitive of √bhī. The classical bhagavat-vāṇī: Kṛṣṇa says it to Arjuna, to the gopīs, to Sudāmā, to every śaraṇāgata. Gauḍīyas hold this as the standing promise the Name carries — every kīrtana is mā bhaiṣṭa spoken by Bhagavān into the soul's ear.
  • abhaya-ārāvau — the two whose call gives fearlessness
Abhaya (fearlessness) + ārāva (sound, cry). The Brothers' very voices grant abhaya. The dual abhaya-ārāvau pairs Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma as twin fountains of abhaya — vātsalya and madhura both founded on this guarantee.
  • śāla-hastau — with logs of the śāla tree in Their hands
Śāla = the tall śāla tree (Shorea robusta); hasta = hand. The Brothers pick weapons from the forest itself — no court swords, no chakras for show. Vraja's response to threats is local, immediate, embodied. (Note: this verse uses 'śāla' without the long ā in some editions.)
  • guhyaka-adhamam — the lowest of Guhyakas (Yakṣas)
Guhyaka = a class of Yakṣa attendant to Kuvera (lit. 'hidden ones,' from √guh). Adhama (lowest, basest). Even within his species, Śaṅkhacūḍa is the worst — Gauḍīyas read: the higher one's birth, the worse one's depravity if dharma is abandoned.
The Lords called out in reply, “Do not fear!” Then They picked up logs of the śala tree and quickly pursued that lowest of Guhyakas, who swiftly ran away.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
The Lords called out in reply, "Do not fear! "Then They picked up logs of the śala tree and quickly pursued that lowest of Guhyakas, who swiftly ran away.
Commentary

As cowherds, in order to protect their cows, pursue a person on seeing that he is herded away all their cows, Krsna and Balarama pursued Sankhacuda.

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

They pursued the demon at great speed immediately. Or they pursued and came close to the demon who was moving quickly.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Replying in order to make the gopīs fearless, they said, “Do not fear!” They caught up with person who had taken the women. They grabbed śāla trees because they were strong boys or because Kṛṣṇa was eager to take the jewel. The demon was the lowest of the Guhyakas since he had previously performed such low acts.

'Do not fear!' — the Brothers' first speech is precisely Bhagavān's standing offer to the prapanna (BG 18.66 abhayaṁ dāsyāmi). Then śala-trunks in hand, They charge the lowest of Guhyakas. Bhakti receives both gifts at once: the word 'do not fear' and the visible action that backs it up.
