  • utpala-saurabham — the fragrance of which is like a blue lotus
Utpala = blue lotus, Kṛṣṇa's emblem flower. Saurabha = inherent fragrance. Gauḍīyas: Bhagavān's body has aprākṛta-saurabha — non-material fragrance that even the demigods cannot manufacture.
  • hṛṣṭa-romā — her bodily hairs standing on end
Horripilation — pulaka, one of the eight aṣṭa-sāttvika-bhāvas catalogued by Rūpa Gosvāmī in Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu. Gauḍīyas: this is the body's involuntary signature of true prema.
  • cucumba — she kissed
Reduplicated perfect of √cumb. The reduplication carries emphatic, lingering action. Gauḍīyas: the kiss in rāsa-līlā is aprākṛta, not a mundane act — Viśvanātha's repeated warning.
Upon the shoulder of one gopī Kṛṣṇa placed His arm, whose natural blue-lotus fragrance was mixed with that of the sandalwood pulp anointing it. As the gopī relished that fragrance, her bodily hair stood on end in jubilation, and she kissed His arm.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Upon the shoulder of one gopī Kṛṣṇa placed His arm, whose natural blue-lotus fragrance was mixed with that of the sandalwood pulp anointing it. As the gopī relished that fragrance, her bodily hair stood on end in jubilation, and she kissed His arm.
Commentary

One gopi then kissed the arm placed on her shoulder (amsagata bahu) which was anointed with sandalwood. In spite of that sandalwood, she could smell the aroma of lotuses, the natural fragrance of Krsna’s body. It was more prominent than the sandalwood. Since this description is similar to verse 32.4, the gopi indicated is Syamala, a sakhi of Radha.

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

This verse indicates Śyāmalā’s actions by similarity to the gopīs actions in SB 10.32.4: another placed his arm, anointed with sandalwood paste, on her shoulder. Kṛṣṇa’s arm had by its nature a fragrance superior to that of a lotus. Additionally it was decorated with sandalwood patterns. Ha means “clearly.” The cause of her kissing Kṛṣṇa was her prema which made her hairs stand on end. Or, taking the literal meaning, her hairs were joyous (hṛṣṭa), what to speak of herself. This is the anubhāva called prāgalbhya. Niḥśaṅkatvaṁ prayogeṣu budhair uktā pragalbhatā: pragalbhatā refers to fearlessness in amorous actions. (Ujjvala-nīlamaṇi 11.21)

Related verses

When a lotus is rubbed with sandalwood paste, the two fragrances do not cancel but compound. So when the gopī inhales Kṛṣṇa's arm — His own lotus-fragrance plus the sandalwood she had applied — every sense delivers Him doubled. Bhakti redoubles every pleasure by re-attaching it to its source.
