  • kṛṣṇa - nāthebhyaḥ — to those who took Kṛṣṇa as their Lord
A compound naming Vraja's new orientation — Kṛṣṇa as nātha, master. The Gosvāmīs read it as the rasa-mūla of śaraṇāgati: the soul declares one nātha and immediately incurs the wrath of the lesser controllers.
  • indraḥ — Lord Indra
King of svarga and of the rain — a devatā within Kṛṣṇa's hierarchy, not above it. Gauḍīyas read this chapter as Bhagavān correcting His own pratinidhi when that representative confuses delegated post for supreme status.
  • cukopa ha — he became angry indeed
The intensive perfect signals an outburst rooted in wounded pride. In Gauḍīya analysis, krodha that arises when one's worship is interrupted is the diagnostic of ahaṅkāra wearing the costume of piety.
  • pūjām — worship
From √pūj. Indra's grievance is precisely that pūjā has been redirected — exposing that even celestial worship can be ego-claimed. The līlā shows Kṛṣṇa retraining Vraja from indirect to direct upāsanā.
Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: My dear King Parīkṣit, when Indra understood that his sacrifice had been put aside, he became furious with Nanda Mahārāja and the other cowherd men, who were accepting Kṛṣṇa as their Lord.

At the very beginning of this chapter Śukadeva Gosvāmī reveals the foolishness of Indra and the absurdity of his anger. Indra was frustrated because the residents of Vṛndāvana accepted Śrī Kṛṣṇa as their Lord. But the simple fact is that Śrī Kṛṣṇa is the Lord, not only of the residents of Vṛndāvana but of all that exists, including Indra himself. Thus Indra’s petulant reaction was ridiculous. As the common saying goes, “Pride goes before a fall.”

Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: My dear King Parīkṣit, when Indra understood that his sacrifice had been put aside, he became furious with Nanda Mahārāja and the other cowherd men, who were accepting Kṛṣṇa as their Lord.
Commentary

In the twenty fifth Chapter Indra speaks with anger and sends rain to destroy the people of Vraja. Krsna , holding Govardhana in his left hand protects Vraja. Indra became angry with the inhabitants of Vraja, showing at once his foolishness and useless of his anger.

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Indra realized that his worship had been diverted, and the materials used for other worship. Because of intoxication with pride and lack of intelligence he became angry at the devotees of Kṛṣṇa, the people of Vraja, including Nanda. His anger became clear (ha) because of his corresponding behavior. An alternate version has saḥ instead of ha. This indicates his lack of intelligence.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Indra directly realized (vijṣāya) that his worship had been diverted, and the materials used for other worship since he came into the sky unnoticed on hearing the commotion. The sacrifice was disrupted, for materials meant for his sacrifice had been used up and he did not receive his portion of the sacrifice. His anger out of pride was misplaced, for the people had taken Kṛṣṇa as their lord (kṛṣna-nāthebhyaḥ). O king! You know about the dangers of pride. The others were Upananda and other cowherds and the priests. Ha means clearly. Such behavior was according to his character.

Indra in his heavenly hall hears that Vraja has stopped his pūjā and begun to worship a cowherd boy — and his face darkens like a sky before storm. Whenever the conditioned soul's prestige is set aside in favor of Kṛṣṇa's direct shelter, the old gods of one's own self-importance flare up first.
