Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.23.5
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
ādiṣṭaḥ
—
ordered
Past participle of ā + √diś. The boys are not improvising; they are executing the Lord's instruction. Obedience precedes outcome in bhakti — the test is the ājñā, not the result.
-
bhagavatā
—
by the Supreme Lord
Instrumental singular of bhagavān. The agent of the entire līlā is named even at the moment the boys appear to act on their own. Gauḍīyas read every action of the sakhās as motivated by Kṛṣṇa's interior cue.
-
kṛta-añjali-puṭāḥ
—
joining their palms in humble supplication
Compound: kṛta (made) + añjali (cupped hands) + puṭāḥ (forming the bowl). The mudrā that turns the body into a beggar's bowl. Even Kṛṣṇa's intimates take this posture before brāhmaṇas.
-
daṇḍa-vat
—
like sticks
Compound: daṇḍa (stick) + vat (like). The full-body daṇḍavat-praṇāma is the highest physical obeisance — body stretched flat as a fallen rod. Vaiṣṇava-etiquette in living form.
-
patitāḥ bhuvi
—
falling upon the ground
patitāḥ (fallen) + bhuvi (on the earth, locative). The earth itself receives the prostration — a microcosm of śaraṇāgati.
They approached with folded hands to show their humble attitude, and to obtain some grains. Though they fell on the ground, they appeared more effulgent than the brahmanas who were living the same Vraja.
Respecting his instruction they went. They are described as acting with proper conduct, folding their hands and falling on the earth to reveal the bad conduct of the brāhmaṇas.
They went because they had to follow the Lord’s order. They begged in the way instructed by Kṛṣṇa. They are described as acting with proper conduct, folding their hands and falling on the earth to reveal the bad conduct of the brāhmaṇas. It is understood that Kṛṣṇa told them to do this. Or because they were the best of devotees this was natural to them to show devotion to brāhmaṇas. They also chanted the Lord’s names.
A messenger boy folded in half before a court official, hands joined — the cowherd boys make their body small before brāhmaṇas. Bhakti does not break vaiṣṇava-etiquette: even when Kṛṣṇa's sakhās bring a request from Bhagavān, they still bow.
