Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.23.4
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
yācata
—
just request
Imperative of √yāc. Bhagavān — the source of all opulence — has His friends beg. This is the first hint of verse 47's wonder: Lakṣmī's husband puts out His hand. Gauḍīyas treasure this as a sign of His vraja-bhāva — He plays the role of the dependent.
-
kīrtayantaḥ
—
announcing
Present participle of √kīrt. The boys are told to do kīrtana of Kṛṣṇa-and-Balarāma's names as their request. Even hunger-relief is to be obtained through nāma-kīrtana — Mahāprabhu's later teaching is prefigured here.
-
bhagavataḥ
—
of the Supreme Lord (Balarāma)
Genitive. Balarāma receives bhagavān-status in the same breath as Kṛṣṇa — Gauḍīya tattva of the prakāśa-mūrti, the immediate self-expansion of Svayam Bhagavān.
-
āryasya
—
of the elder
From √ṛ; āryasya — 'of the noble elder.' Kṛṣṇa, even as Svayam Bhagavān, names His brother first. The mood of the cowherd brothers governs the syntax.
-
abhidhām
—
name
From abhi + √dhā, 'to name.' Specifically the divine name, not a label. The boys carry nāma as their currency — a Gauḍīya emblem.
Lord Kṛṣṇa encouraged His boyfriends to request charity without being embarrassed. In case the boys felt they had no right to personally approach such respectable brāhmaṇas, the Lord told them to mention the names of Balarāma and Kṛṣṇa, the holy names of God.
You should ask for rice (yacata), calling out our names. Though they are supposed to be intelligent, they must be woken from deep slumber by calling out our names, calling out Baladeva’s name first. He is more elevated than I, since he is of ksatriya birth. The materialists will give to him out of respect. Even if they give a little, it is acceptable.
If you are feeling a little shy about this, say that you have been sent by us, not your parents. You should glorify the name of my brother who has great power, who is related to me.
“As devotees we should not beg for food.” You were sent by us two. Thus you have no fault. “But the followers also are at fault.” By doing kīrtana of our names, the fault will be destroyed. Why? The Lord is full of all powers (bhagavataḥ). He taught a method of begging while chanting the Lord’s names.
A prince sending messengers with his royal seal expects every door to open. Kṛṣṇa hands the boys His name and Balarāma's as a passkey — but the door this key truly opens is not the brāhmaṇas' hall; it is the inner chamber of the wives.
