Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.16.57
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
sṛṣṭam
—
created
From √sṛj — to emit, to create. Bhagavān's sṛṣṭi is total — including even the modes that make snakes angry. Gauḍīya: nothing is outside His creative hand, including the conditions of the conditioned.
-
dhātaḥ
—
O supreme provider / arranger
From √dhā — to place, to arrange. Bhagavān as Vidhātṛ — the placer. The verse's vocative honors Him not as judge but as arranger of every variety, including Kāliya's variety.
-
guṇa - visarjanam
—
the production (variegation) of (creatures) by the modes
Compound: guṇa + visarjana (sending forth). The modes produce the variety of species. Bhāgavata cosmology: the same three modes account for all biological diversity. Gauḍīya: this is no insult — it is creation theology.
Commenting on this verse, Śrīla Madhvācārya has quoted the Nārada Purāṇa as follows: “From Hiraṇyagarbha, Brahmā, comes the second creation of this universe, but the universe is primarily created by Viṣṇu Himself. Viṣṇu is thus the primary creator, and four-headed Brahmā is merely the secondary creator.”
"You have made a universe with great variety through operation of the gunas (gunair visarjanam): a variety of natures, various strength of bodies and sense organs (virya, oja), distinctions of mother and father (yoni, bija), various desires and various forms."
He elaborates in one and a half verses. “Brahmā carries out creation not me.” In reply Kāliya says “O creator (dhātar)! You create in that particular form.” Svabhāva refers to qualities like peacefulness. Vīrya is strength of the body and ojas is strength of the senses. Yoni refers to mother and bīja refers to father. Aśaya refers to desires. Ākṛti means form.
You created this universe with its variegated modes, its many species, its varieties of strength and weakness, of fathers and mothers and mentalities. Even my serpent-nature came from Your arrangement. Kāliya situates himself inside Bhagavān's creation — not as an accident but as a placed creature.
