Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.16.12
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
vraje
—
in Vṛndāvana
Vraja — the sacred land. Gauḍīya theology: Vraja is non-different from Goloka, the highest spiritual realm; the trembling of Vraja is the trembling of the heart of the spiritual world.
-
mahā - utpātāḥ
—
great calamitous omens
Compound: mahā (great) + utpāta (calamity, omen). Classical śāstra: utpātas of three kinds — terrestrial, atmospheric, bodily — herald change. Here they herald not Kṛṣṇa's defeat but His revelation.
-
tri - vidhāḥ
—
of three kinds
Compound: tri (three) + vidhā (kind). Echoes the three-fold sufferings (ādhyātmika, ādhibhautika, ādhidaivika). Vraja's whole register of distress is being sounded at once.
According to Śrīla Śrīdhara Svāmī, the omens were as follows: on the earth there were disturbing tremors, in the sky there were meteors falling, and in the bodies of creatures there was shivering, as well as quivering of the left eye and other parts of the body. These omens announce imminent danger.
Three inauspicious signs appeared in Vraja: on the earth, earthquakes; in the sky, meteors falling; and in the body, twitching of the left eye. Though there can be nothing inauspicious for the Lord, in order to indicate the lamentation of the inhabitants of Vraja, the devatas in charge of earthquakes and other disturbances did this. Or being attracted to the intimate mood of Vraja, out of affection for Krsna, to make his aisvarya become forgotten, they produced omens indicating misfortune for Krsna.
After this, omens greatly fearful by their very nature and portending disaster by their nature appeared. These omens appeared in order to bring great devotees like Nanda and others to the lake to show the great wickedness of Kāliya.
All three signs come at once: the earth shakes, the sky shows portents, the body trembles. Vraja's whole instrument is sounding the same chord — Kṛṣṇa is in danger. The cosmos itself is tuned to His person.
