The protective armor of Nārāyaṇa, which Indra possessed, was identical with Nārāyaṇa Himself, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Protected by that armor and by his own mystic power, King Indra, although swallowed by Vṛtrāsura, did not die within the demon’s belly.

Translation
Protected by the Nārāyaṇa-kavaca and by his own mystic power, Indra, although swallowed by Vṛtrāsura, did not die within the demon's belly.
Protected by the Nārāyaṇa-kavaca (mahā-puruṣeṇa) and his power gained through aṣṭāṅga-yoga, he did not die. He remained invisible (māyā) in the form of air by the power of invisibility.
