The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: O greatly fortunate Uddhava, you have accurately revealed My desire to withdraw the Yadu dynasty from the earth and return to My own abode in Vaikuṇṭha. Thus Lord Brahmā, Lord Śiva and all other planetary rulers are now praying for Me to resume My residence in Vaikuṇṭha.

Each and every demigod has his particular abode in the heavenly planets within the material universe. Although Lord Viṣṇu is sometimes counted among the demigods, His abode is in Vaikuṇṭha, the spiritual sky. The demigods are universal controllers within the kingdom of māyā, but Viṣṇu is the Lord of the illusory potency and many other spiritual potencies. His exalted residence does not lie within the kingdom of His insignificant maidservant māyā.

Lord Viṣṇu, the Personality of Godhead, is the Supreme Lord of all lords; the demigods are His separated parts and parcels. Being themselves minute jīva souls, the demigods are under the influence of the potency of māyā; but Lord Viṣṇu is always the supreme controller of māyā. The Personality of Godhead is the reservoir and root of all existence, and the material world is just a dim reflection of the brilliant scenery of His eternal, spiritual abode, where everything is infinitely beautiful and pleasurable. Viṣṇu is the supreme reality, and no living entity can ever be equal to or greater than Him. The Lord exists within His own unique category called viṣṇu-tattva, or the Supreme Personality of Godhead. All other prominent or extraordinary living entities owe their positions and potencies to the Lord. Ultimately Viṣṇu Himself is a plenary expansion of Lord Kṛṣṇa, the original source of all the viṣṇu-tattva and jīva-tattva expansions. Thus Lord Kṛṣṇa is the basis of everything.

Translation
The Supreme Lord said: O greatly fortunate Uddhava! You have accurately revealed my desire to withdraw the Yadu dynasty from the earth and return to my own abode in Vaikuṇṭha. Thus Brahmā, Śiva and all other planetary rulers are now praying for me to resume my residence in Vaikuṇṭha. In the Seventh Chapter, desiring to give Uddhava jṣāna and vairāgya, Kṛṣṇa speaks of the various gurus starting with the earth, mentioned by the avadhūta. Svar-vāsam means “to Vaikuṇṭha.”
Kṛṣṇa confirms His own desire to withdraw the Yadus and return to Vaikuṇṭha — even the universal rulers must defer to the Lord's sovereign plan.
Practical Applications
  • Name one situation today where you are quietly resisting an ending Kṛṣṇa is clearly closing, and stop arguing with the timing.
  • When you pray, drop the demand-tone and align your asking with what the Lord is already doing in your life this week.
  • Refuse the temptation to treat any controller — boss, government, even a respected demigod-like figure — as the ultimate authority over your situation.
Reflection Questions
  • Where am I praying for Kṛṣṇa to stay within an arrangement He is signalling He wants to dissolve, and what attachment is driving that request?
  • If even Brahmā and Śiva position themselves as petitioners before Viṣṇu, where am I still quietly placing myself above that posture in my own life?
For Each Age Group
youth
  • When a friendship or group is clearly ending — a graduating class, a club, a shared house — stop praying for it to last and start asking how to leave it cleanly.
  • Notice when you treat a professor, coach, or online figure as a final authority on your life, and remember even Brahmā and Śiva are petitioners before the Lord.
  • Before exam season, frame your study not as a demand on Kṛṣṇa for a result but as cooperation with what He is already arranging for your next stage.
householder
  • When a job, a house, or a phase of family life is visibly closing, audit which prayers of yours are really arguments with the Lord's timing, and drop them.
  • In family decisions, refuse to make any human controller — in-laws, employer, government — the ultimate reference point; check the choice against Kṛṣṇa's stated will first.
  • Model for your children that even great powers in this world are praying upward, so they grow up locating final authority in the Lord, not in worldly success.
senior
  • When peers pray loudly for your health or longevity, internally align instead with whatever withdrawal or remaining the Lord is indicating for you.
  • Loosen your grip on legacies — institutions, properties, even disciples — remembering that the Lord arranges arrivals and departures on His own schedule.
  • Mentor younger devotees into the posture of Brahmā and Śiva in this verse: petitioning, not commanding; cooperating with Kṛṣṇa's withdrawals, not resisting them.
Common Pitfalls
  • Reading the verse as cosmic trivia about demigods instead of as a personal instruction to align with the Lord's withdrawing and revealing movements in your own life.
  • Flattening Viṣṇu into one more powerful being on the same scale as Brahmā and Śiva, instead of recognizing the viṣṇu-tattva category as wholly distinct.
  • Using the Lord's sovereign plan as an excuse for passivity — "it is all His will" — rather than for active, surrendered cooperation with what He is doing.
Discussion Prompts
  • Share a time you prayed hard for something to continue, and later realized Kṛṣṇa was kindly ending it — what changed in your prayer after that?
  • Why does Prabhupāda insist on the distinction between Viṣṇu and the demigods here, and where in modern spiritual culture do you see that distinction collapsed?
  • If even Brahmā and Śiva are praying for the Lord to resume His abode, what does that tell you about the limits of any institution, lineage, or leader you currently rely on?
Role Play

One student plays a senior devotee who is being asked by community members to pray that a beloved guru's life be extended; another plays a younger devotee who senses the guru himself wishes to depart. Work through the conversation in light of this verse — how to honor affection without praying against the Lord's clearly indicated desire.

Objections & Responses
  • If Kṛṣṇa was always going to withdraw the Yadus anyway, Uddhava's perception and the demigods' prayers are just theater — why bother praying at all?
The Lord's plan is sovereign, but He delights in the conscious participation of His devotees. Uddhava's accurate reading and the demigods' prayers are not what cause the withdrawal — they are the loving recognition that lets them move with Him rather than be left behind by Him. Surrendered prayer aligns the heart with what Kṛṣṇa is doing; it is never a lever to override Him.
  • Treating Viṣṇu as categorically above Brahmā and Śiva sounds sectarian — aren't all these just names for one Absolute?
Prabhupāda's purport is precise here: Brahmā and Śiva are jīvas under māyā's influence, while Viṣṇu is the Lord of māyā and stands in His own category, viṣṇu-tattva. This is not sectarian preference; it is the structural difference between a servant of the potency and the master of the potency. Collapsing that distinction is exactly the impersonalist drift the Gauḍīya line is meant to correct.
