Important Words
-
mahā-rathāḥ
—
great chariot-warriors
Compound: mahā (great) + ratha (chariot). The Mahābhārata's technical rank: a warrior capable of fighting eleven thousand archers single-handed (atiratha is higher still). Bhagavān's sons fill this rank; aiśvarya extends through them.
-
uddāma-vīryāṇām
—
of unlimited valor
Compound: uddāma (unrestrained) + vīrya (potency). Bhagavān's potency flows undammed through His progeny. Brahma-saṁhitā 5.46 — His expansions retain His power. The mahā-rathas are extensions of Kṛṣṇa's vīrya.
-
udāra-yaśasaḥ
—
of magnanimous fame
udāra (generous, exalted) + yaśas (renown). Their fame is open-handed — distributed widely. The Yadu line's renown is itself a missionary fact in the world; Kṛṣṇa's family glorifies bhakti by existing.
Among these sons, all possessing unlimited valor, eighteen were mahā-rathas of great renown. Now hear their names from me.

Translation

Commentary
Though all the sons had great power, eighteen were special among them, having great strength and prowess (mahā-rathāḥ). Therefore they had great fame (udāra-yaśasas). Or, they were the best in courageous acts and also generous in performing rites (udāra-yaśasas). Hear of them from me. Others give them different names. Because of being discerned as the best, I will tell their names.

Analogy
Of His countless sons, eighteen are named mahā-rathas — supreme chariot-warriors. Aiśvarya's dynastic count is not flattened; specific names will follow. Bhāgavatam preserves identity at the genealogical edge.
