Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.89.25
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
vipra-ṛṣiḥ
—
the brāhmaṇa-sage
Compound: vipra (brāhmaṇa) + ṛṣi (seer). Not just a brāhmaṇa but a vipra-ṛṣi — a sage. The episode escalates: the loss is happening to one of the highest dharma-classes, in the very capital of Bhagavān.
-
visṛjya
—
having released, having left
Gerund of vi + √sṛj (to send forth). The corpse is 'released' at the king's gate. Gauḍīyas note the precision: not 'thrown,' not 'dumped' — visṛjya, a deliberate ritual placement.
-
gāthām
—
the song, the lament
From √gai (to sing). The lament has become a fixed composition — repeated verbatim. This narrative detail will matter: by the ninth iteration, the gāthā is part of the public record of Dvārakā.
The brahmana loudly declared such words (tam gatham) as "You are a hater of brahmanas" when the second and third sons died.
The word ca indicates that were a total of nine deaths. Since he was a sage among brāhmaṇas, he was faultless, fully qualified. The brāhmaṇa made the same statement: that the king hated brāhmaṇas, since he took pleasure in violence etc.
The word ca indicates that were a total of nine deaths. Since he was a sage among brāhmaṇas, he was faultless concering the death of his sons. These children also died just after being born. Thus their death was the king’s fault.
The brāhmaṇa returns again and again — second, third, ninth corpses — and sings the same gāthā at the same gate. Repetition does not change the kingdom's response; it changes the listener. Arjuna is in the audience, and the ninth iteration will finally pull him in.
