Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.82.33
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
prema-vihvalaḥ
—
beside himself due to love
Compound: prema (perfected love) + vihvalaḥ (overwhelmed, helpless). The exact Gauḍīya phrase for prema's bodily impact. Vihvalatā — the soul shaken open by love it cannot contain. Mahāprabhu's biographies are saturated with this word.
-
putra-nyāsam
—
the leaving of his sons (in trust)
Compound: putra (son) + nyāsam (deposit, entrusting). Nyāsa is a legal-religious term — a sacred trust. Vasudeva deposited his sons with Nanda; the trust held. Gauḍīyas read all bhakti as ātma-nikṣepa — the soul deposited with the Lord.
-
kaṁsa-kṛtān kleśān
—
the troubles created by Kaṁsa
Compound phrase: kaṁsa (the tyrant) + kṛtān (made) + kleśān (afflictions, accusative plural). Kleśas are the standard Vaiṣṇava category for affliction (cf. avidyā-asmitā-rāga-dveṣa-abhiniveśa, but here in social-historical form).
-
samprītaḥ
—
overjoyed
Compound: sam (fully) + prītaḥ (loved, satisfied). Prīti — affectionate satisfaction. The relief of grief through bhakti-meeting; not absence of feeling but feeling's right fulfilment.
Having described the Vṛṣṇis’ reaction in general, now Vasudeva’s detailed reaction is described. More than the others, Vasudeva was completely overjoyed and then overcome with prema—with ecstatic symptoms like goose bumps and trembling. He remembered how Kaṁsa had imprisoned him and killed his other sons and how he had put his son or his two sons in Gokula. He remembered the previous incidents on seeing Nanda, because of recalling the great help Nanda had been in freeing him from suffering.
Some embraces hold not just the body in your arms but the years they survived through. Vasudeva clasps Nanda and inside the embrace is the night he carried the infant Kṛṣṇa across the Yamunā — every grief that gift cost him.
On the night of Kṛṣṇa's birth, with Kaṁsa hunting newborns, Vasudeva carried his eighth child through chains that fell open, doors that unbarred themselves, and a Yamunā that parted (SB 10.3-4). He laid Kṛṣṇa beside the sleeping Yaśodā and took her newborn daughter back to the prison.
For decades Vasudeva did not see the son he had carried. Embracing Nanda at Kurukṣetra, all of that returns — putra-nyāsam ca gokule, the leaving of his sons in Gokula. Gauḍīyas treasure this verse as proof that Vraja vātsalya is not just Nanda-Yaśodā's privilege; Vasudeva's heart contains the same fire.
