  • tanvaḥ prāṇam iva utthitāḥ — rising as if bodies receiving their vital air
Phrase: tanvaḥ (bodies) + prāṇam (life-air) + iva (as if) + utthitāḥ (risen). The Bhāgavata's bold image — separation from a beloved devotee is death; reunion is resurrection. Gauḍīyas read vaiṣṇava-saṅga in exactly this register.
  • cira-darśana-kātarāḥ — agitated from (not) seeing for a long time
Compound: cira (long time) + darśana (seeing) + kātarāḥ (agitated, distressed). The technical vocabulary of viraha — long absence of darśana causes kātaratā. Rūpa Gosvāmī catalogues this state in detail.
  • pariṣaśvajire gāḍham — they embraced firmly
Phrase: pariṣaśvajire (perfect of pari-√svaj, embraced around) + gāḍham (tightly). Embrace as bhakti's bodily idiom. Note this verse already foreshadows verse 39's interior embrace — the gopīs will take Him into their hearts.
  • hṛṣṭāḥ — delighted
Past participle of √hṛṣ — to thrill. Hṛṣṭa is the standard Bhāgavata term for the delight of bhakti-meeting. The Lord's name Hṛṣīkeśa (master of the senses) shares this root — He thrills the senses of His devotees.
Seeing Nanda, the Vṛṣṇis were delighted and stood up like dead bodies coming back to life. Having felt much distress at not seeing him for so long, they held him in a tight embrace.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Seeing Nanda, the Vṛṣṇis were delighted and stood up like dead bodies coming back to life. Having felt much distress at not seeing him for so long, they held him in a tight embrace.
Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Seated in an assembly when Kṛṣṇa was not present, the Vṛṣṇis, joyful, stood up as if their hands, feet and other limbs had regained their chief life air after fainting. In immediately standing up at the same time, they showed that they were all dependent for life upon Nanda. This act also showed Nanda’s great qualities. They were overcome with seeing him after a long time. Or they were overjoyed in seeing him after a long time. Thus they embraced him intensely.

A body without prāṇa is no body — when prāṇa returns, the limbs rise. The Vṛṣṇis without Nanda were corpses of grief; his arrival is the prāṇa that lifts them.
