  • bhagavān — eternally the father of Kṛṣṇa (Bhagavān's father is also Bhagavān)
The verse applies bhagavān to Nanda — Prabhupāda's purport explains: 'Bhagavān's father is also Bhagavān', a Gauḍīya doctrinal claim. Nitya-siddha parents share in Bhagavān's bhagavattā by relational expansion.
  • vraje — in Vrajabhūmi, Vṛndāvana
Locative. The verse-location, now fully named as Vraja. The dhāma in which Goloka-līlā unfolds on earth. Gauḍīya pilgrimage centers on this verse's referent.
  • mahā - yaśāḥ — the very famous transcendentalist
Mahā (great) + yaśas (fame). His fame is mahā precisely because of his fortune as Kṛṣṇa's father. Gauḍīya: Nanda's nāma-kīrtana is itself an aṅga of Kṛṣṇa-bhakti (cf. nāma-saṅkīrtana of vraja-bhaktas).
  • nandaḥ iti khyātaḥ — celebrated as Nanda
Nandaḥ (the joy-giver, from √nand) + iti (thus) + khyāta (celebrated, made famous). His earthly name itself means 'joy' — and joy is what he eternally gives Kṛṣṇa as foster-father.
  • yaśodā sā dharā — she, Dharā, (became) Yaśodā
Yaśodā (yaśas + dā — 'giver of fame') + sā (she) + dharā (the earth-bearer). The verse plays both names against each other: she who supports the earth becomes she who gives fame to Kṛṣṇa. The structural pun is theology.
When Brahmā said, “Yes, let it be so,” the most fortune Droṇa, who was equal to Bhagavān, appeared in Vrajapura, Vṛndāvana, as the most famous Nanda Mahārāja, and his wife, Dharā, appeared as mother Yaśodā.

Because whenever Kṛṣṇa appears on this earth He superficially needs a father and mother, Droṇa and Dharā, His eternal father and mother, appeared on earth before Kṛṣṇa as Nanda Mahārāja and Yaśodā. In contrast to Sutapā and Pṛśni, they did not undergo severe penances and austerities to become the father and mother of Kṛṣṇa. This is the difference between nitya-siddha and sādhana-siddha.

— A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
When Brahmā said, "Yes, let it be so," the most fortune Droṇa, who was equal to Bhagavān, appeared in Vrajapura, Vṛndāvana, as the most famous Nanda Mahārāja, and his wife, Dharā, appeared as mother Yaśodā.
Commentary

Drona was born as Nanda in Vraja and Dhara was born as Yasoda. It should be understood that they, as sadhana siddhas, entered into the nitya siddha forms of Nanda and Yasoda at that time.

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

The word bhagavān modifies Droṇa to show great respect. One version has sa eve iha instead of sa bhagavān. That person, Droṇa, took birth in Vraja (iha) as Nanda, who became even more famous than previously (mahā-yaśaḥ).

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Saḥ indictes Nanda, not his expansion Droṇa. When the Lord appears as svayam bhagavān with his full form, his associates also appear in their full form. He was born in Mathuṛa district. He was very famous. This was indicated by his prayer. Or more than previously, he was famous. He was known as Nanda. This also indicates his fame (giving joy to all). Mahā-yaśāḥ can modify both Nanda and Yaśodā.

Related verses
Nanda and Yaśodā are nitya-siddha — eternal parents of Kṛṣṇa — reminding us that the highest relationship with Him is given by grace, not earned by tapas alone.
Practical Applications
  • Today, name one relationship in your life that you treat as transactional, and consciously serve in it without expecting a return — taste a drop of nitya-siddha mood.
  • Refuse the inner accountant that tallies your sādhana as currency for Kṛṣṇa's favor; do your chanting and study today purely as the natural expression of an eternal servant.
  • Speak Nanda and Yaśodā's names once today with reverence, and remember that pure parental love for Kṛṣṇa already exists eternally — your task is only to seek shelter of it.

Two royal envoys, having been granted the king's permission, take up posts in a distant village under new names — and from that moment the village ceases to be a village and becomes the king's beloved residence. Droṇa-Dharā become Nanda-Yaśodā, and Vraja becomes Goloka on earth.
