Important Words
-
abhyanujñātaḥ
—
given leave
Past participle of abhi + anu + √jñā, 'permitted to depart.' Even Bhagavān takes formal leave of brāhmaṇas — the Lord models the etiquette He has prescribed for His devotees. The smallest social grace is preserved by the One who needs none of it.
-
kauśikīm
—
to the Kauśikī River
Accusative of Kauśikī (the river of Viśvāmitra's lineage, the modern Kosi). Sacred for its association with the kauśika-gotra and Viśvāmitra's tapas. Balarāma's first stop after Naimiṣa is the river of a brāhmaṇa-sage's penance — He continues to honor brahminical geography.
-
sarayūḥ
—
the Sarayū River
The river of Ayodhyā, of Rāmacandra. By bathing at its source-lake Balarāma quietly enters the geography of His previous līlā as Lord Rāma's elder brother — Gauḍīyas read all Daśaratha-līlā as a līlā of Lord Rāma alongside Lakṣmaṇa, with Balarāma's own form being adjacent in tattva.
-
snātvā
—
bathing
Absolutive of √snā. Snāna at a tīrtha is the basic act of pilgrimage — yet when Bhagavān bathes there, the water itself is purified rather than the bather. The grammar describes the Lord's act; the theology reverses the direction of grace.
Then, given leave by the sages, the Lord went with a contingent of brāhmaṇas to the Kauśikī River, where He bathed. From there He went to the lake from which flows the river Sarayū.

Translation
Then, given leave by the sages, the Lord went with a contingent of brāhmaṇas to the Kauśikī River, where He bathed. From there He went to the lake from which flows the river Sarayū.
Commentary
He went to the lake from which the Sarayu river flows.
Jīva Gosvāmī
Gauḍīya
Commentary
After that (atha), he took permission from the sages since he wanted to begin his pilgrimage. He went with priests to the Sarayū River.

Analogy
With the demon dispatched and the abhiṣeka complete, Balarāma turns His feet east — and the rest of the chapter becomes a kind of moving Bhāgavatam, a string of holy waters touched in order. Each tīrtha is a bead, the Lord's feet are the thread, and the brāhmaṇas walking beside Him are the household of the rosary.
