Important Words
-
abhipretya
—
recognizing / understanding
Gerund of abhi-pra-√i. Not just visual recognition — recognizing who has arrived. The sages know they are receiving Saṅkarṣaṇa, not merely a Yadu prince.
-
dīrgha-satriṇaḥ
—
performers of a long sacrifice
Dīrgha (long) + satrin (sacrificer in a satra). They are in a sustained yajña — exactly the context that will then make Romaharṣaṇa's seated posture significant under śāstra.
-
abhinandya
—
having greeted with joy
Gerund of abhi-√nand (to rejoice). The greeting is suffused with joy, not just protocol. Vaiṣṇavas greet Vaiṣṇavas with internal ānanda; the sages here demonstrate that paramparā.
-
praṇamya
—
having bowed down
Gerund of pra-√nam. Daṇḍavat-praṇāma — the standard Vaiṣṇava prostration. The sages enact precisely the protocol that Romaharṣaṇa is about to omit.
-
ārcayan
—
they worshiped
Imperfect 3pl of √arc. To offer arcana. Even mid-satra the sages pause to perform arcana for the Lord — establishing that arcana of a Vaiṣṇava is not a break from yajña but its completion.
Recognizing the Lord upon His arrival, the sages, who had been engaged in their sacrificial rituals for a long time, greeted Him properly by standing up, bowing down and worshiping Him.
Gauḍīya Ācāryas
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura
Gauḍīya
Translation
Recognizing the Lord upon His arrival, the sages, who had been engaged in their sacrificial rituals for a long time, greeted Him properly by standing up, bowing down and worshiping Him.
Jīva Gosvāmī
Gauḍīya
Commentary
First they rose from their seats, then they offered respects, then they welcomed him (abhinandya). Then they worshipped him according to the rules.

Analogy
The sages, mid-yajña, see Balarāma arrive and rise as one — like reeds bending together when a single wind passes. Proper greeting is itself a Vedic limb of the rite; their standing up is not interruption but continuation of the sacrifice, now offered to the Yajña-puruṣa Himself.
