Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.71.36
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
maṅgala - pāṇayaḥ
—
with auspicious offerings in hand
Maṅgala — auspicious. The hand is the upacāra-vessel; bhakti always carries something — even if only a flower, a leaf, water (Bg 9.26: patraṁ puṣpaṁ phalaṁ toyam).
-
śreṇī - mukhyāḥ
—
leaders of guilds
Śreṇī — occupational guild. The verse honours civic structure as a unit of worship; merchants, artisans and traders worship the Lord through their guilds, not despite them.
-
hata - enasaḥ
—
whose sins are destroyed
Hata — killed; enas — sin. One approach to Kṛṣṇa, hands full of maṅgala, kills sin. Gauḍīya reading: the contact itself purifies before any other rite is performed.
Śrīla Prabhupāda writes: “While Lord Kṛṣṇa was thus passing on the road, at intervals some of the citizens, who were all rich, respectable and freed from sinful activities, presented auspicious articles to the Lord, just to offer Him a reception to the city. Thus they worshiped Him as humble servitors.”
The heads of the various communities with particular crafts (sreni mukhyah) worshiped the Lord.
The businesses of the city are described. All the leaders were devoid of karmas on remembering him. They performed his worship (kṛṣṇāya).
At various places on the road the citizens gathered with auspicious items such as yogurt and rice, unlimited articles from their houses, in their hands and worshipped Kṛṣṇa, who attracts everyone, because they were pure hearted (hatainasaḥ) or they destroyed the sin of others. They performed worship of Kṛṣṇa or in order to attain Kṛṣṇa (kṛṣṇāya).
Citizens approaching with auspicious gifts and guild-leaders coming forward sin-free for worship is like merchants who, having opened their shops for the day, find the King of the city walking past — they fold their goods into offerings before any sale is made.
