Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.68.17
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
ambikā - putram
—
the son of Ambikā
Dhṛtarāṣṭra. Naming him by his mother (Ambikā, queen of Vicitravīrya, mother by Vyāsa) recalls the irregular origin of the Kuru line — and reminds the listener that even Dhṛtarāṣṭra's kingship rests on Vyāsa's grace.
-
bhīṣmam droṇam ca
—
to Bhīṣma and Droṇa
The two greatest elders of the Kuru court — both devotees in their hearts, both bound to Duryodhana by oath and salt. Their later fates at Kurukṣetra hover over this scene.
-
vidhi - vat
—
according to scriptural injunction
Uddhava observes śāstra precisely. The contrast with the Kurus' lawless conduct (verses 22, 27) is deliberate.
Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī points out that there is no reference here to Uddhava offering respect to Yudhiṣṭhira and his associates, since at that time the Pāṇḍavas were staying in Indraprastha.
As there is no mention of offering respects to Yudisthira and the other Pandavas, it is understood that they were now living Indraprastha.
The Pāṇḍavas are not mentioned since they were now living in Indraprastha. The word ca after mentioning Duryodhana indicates that actually he should not have respected Duryodhana, but according to custom, he also externally offered him respect. Ultimately Uddhava also saw that Paramātmā was present in all the rulers present there.
He greeted Bhīṣma first since he was the chief Kuru. The Pāṇḍavas are not mentioned since they were now living in Indraprastha. They had not assisted in capturing Sāmba.
A skilled envoy entering a court greets each pillar by name before delivering his message — Uddhava bows to Dhṛtarāṣṭra, Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Bāhlika, Duryodhana, then quietly announces the elder Yādava's arrival.
