Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.63.41
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
deva-dattam
—
given by God
Compound: deva (God) + datta (given). The human body as Bhagavān's gift. Gauḍīyas read deva here as Bhagavān, not the demigods — the verse's frame is Kṛṣṇa-as-grantor.
-
nṛ-lokam
—
the human world
Compound: nṛ (human) + loka. The Bhāgavatam consistently elevates nṛ-loka — even above svarga — because here alone is bhakti possible at full intensity. Gauḍīyas cite this as the rationale for treating human birth as a precious karma-fruit.
-
ajita-indriyaḥ
—
uncontrolled senses
Compound: a (not) + jita (conquered) + indriya (senses). Inverted form of jitendriya. The person who has won the human birth but not the senses is the verse's particular tragedy — Gauḍīyas treat this state as worse than animal birth.
-
ātma-vañcakaḥ
—
self-cheater
Compound: ātma (self) + vañcaka (cheater). The harshest Bhāgavata diagnosis — no external villain, the soul has only deceived itself. Gauḍīyas read this in the light of CC Antya: Caitanya's tears for the self-deceived are the model response.
Lord Śiva here condemns those who refuse to engage in the devotional service of the Supreme Lord.
In this verse he criticizes those who do not worship the lord. "Having attain a human body, given by you (deva dattam imam), the jiva absorbed in his sense pleasure does not respect your feet."
Though you make a person qualified for bhakti to you, such as having me teach Bāṇa by some mercy, the person remains disinterested in you and is to be lamented by persons like me. Having attained a human body suitable for serving you by your mercy, or has attained the human world where you appear as avatāra, now by mercy which spreads everywhere through a relationship with some great devotees, if he does not respect your feet he is lamentable. The Lord should be most respected for giving such help but because a person cannot control his senses, he does not respect you since (hi) he cheats himself.
The non-devotees are criticized. Having attained a human form, suitable for worshipping you (imam), given by the Lord who should be respected as the greatest benefactor, a person who does not control his senses, who does not serve your feet with respect, is lamentable and condemned because he cheats even himself. Or certainly (hi) he is lamentable. He is completely ungrateful, disrespecting that you are the greatest benefactor. Moreover, he is devoid of happiness in this life and the next (ātma-vaṣcakaḥ).
A traveler given a once-in-a-lifetime ticket who then spends the journey on the food cart — that is the human form misused. Born into the rare nṛ-loka, given senses with the capacity for śravaṇa and kīrtana, the soul who does not honor Kṛṣṇa's feet has cheated nobody but himself.
