Important Words
-
brahma-astrasya
—
of the brahmāstra
The highest mantra-weapon, invoked by brahma-mantras. Kṛṣṇa neutralizes it with another brahmāstra: same family, same potency. Gauḍīyas note that even the Veda's own most fearful astra is in His drawer.
-
pāśupatasya
—
of the pāśupata weapon
Śiva's personal supreme astra — the one Arjuna received after the Kirāta encounter. Even this, the asset of asset-holders, is matched here. Kṛṣṇa's reply is nārāyaṇāstra, His own personal weapon — Viṣṇu-tattva trumps Pāśupata-tattva.
-
naijam
—
His own
From nija — one's very own. Bhagavān deploys His nija-astra against Śiva's nija-astra. The chapter teaches by parallel structure: each side brings what is most personal; on the Viṣṇu side, the personal weapon is sovereign.
-
pārjanyam
—
the rain weapon
From Parjanya, the rain-cloud deity. Cited in Gītā 3.14 — annād bhavanti bhūtāni, parjanyād anna-sambhavaḥ. The cosmic order of element-against-element is in Kṛṣṇa's hand even on a battlefield.
Lord Kṛṣṇa counteracted a brahmāstra with another brahmāstra, a wind weapon with a mountain weapon, a fire weapon with a rain weapon, and Lord Śiva’s personal pāśupatāstra weapon with His own personal weapon, the nārāyaṇāstra.

Translation
Lord Kṛṣṇa counteracted a brahmāstra with another brahmāstra, a wind weapon with a mountain weapon, a fire weapon with a rain weapon, and Lord Śiva's personal pāśupatāstra weapon with His own personal weapon, the nārāyaṇāstra.
Commentary
Counteracting Siva’s weapons is described in this verse. Brahmastra was countered with a Brahmastra. The verb "released" is understood from the previous verse. Krsna countered the pasupata weapon with his own weapon (naijam), the Narayana astra.
Jīva Gosvāmī
Gauḍīya
Commentary
When Śiva used a brahmāstra, Kṛṣṇa also used a brahmāstra. The verb is in the previous verse. Naijam means “his own.”

Analogy
Fire is quenched not by argument but by rain; wind is stilled not by another wind but by mountain. So each of Śiva's weapons is met by the element appointed to receive it. Kṛṣṇa is the ledger in which every śakti's opposite is already written.
