Important Words
-
samabhyetya
—
going forward to meet
Absolutive of sam-abhi-√i. Pratyudgamana (going forward to greet) is the host's first duty in the Smṛtis. Bhīṣmaka does everything right by the manuals — and yet misses the actual divine guest, who will arrive incognito in verse 32.
-
abhipūjya
—
honoring
Absolutive of abhi-√pūj. Worship of the wrong object. Gauḍīyas read this verse against SB 10.41 — there, Mathurā worships Kṛṣṇa as He enters; here Vidarbha worships His rival.
-
niveśayām āsa
—
settled him
Periphrastic perfect of ni-√viś. The same verb used at 53.34 for Bhīṣmaka settling Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma. The chapter's irony: the king extends identical hospitality to enemy and Lord, because he cannot yet tell them apart.
Bhīṣmaka, the lord of Vidarbha, came out of the city and met King Damaghoṣa, offering him tokens of respect. Bhīṣmaka then settled Damaghoṣa in a residence especially constructed for the occasion.

Translation
Bhīṣmaka, the lord of Vidarbha, came out of the city and met King Damaghoṣa, offering him tokens of respect. Bhīṣmaka then settled Damaghoṣa in a residence especially constructed for the occasion.

Commentary
Bhīṣmaka welcomed him according to custom (mudā). Or mudā (joyfully) can refer to Rukmī being joyful, since he was the main person doing the welcoming.

Analogy
A host welcomes the guest who has come to take his daughter and seats him in a finely built house. Bhīṣmaka's hospitality is technically perfect and existentially blind — Vyāsa is laying out the etiquette of a wedding that will never happen.
