Important Words
-
yācitaḥ
—
requested
Past participle of √yāc — to beg. Even Indra and the demigods had to come as supplicants. The Bhāgavata enjoys reversing demigod-pride: the masters of the upper worlds beg a human kṣatriya. Bhakti orders are not flat — sometimes the human bhakta is higher than the deva.
-
indra-ādyaiḥ
—
headed by Indra
Compound: indra + ādyaiḥ (and others). Gauḍīyas read demigod-instrumentality with care: they are real, powerful, but conditioned. Mucukunda protected them; later (verse 20) they confess they cannot give him liberation — only Viṣṇu can.
-
asurebhyaḥ
—
from the demons
Ablative of asura — those opposed to sura (light, dharma). The basic Vaiṣṇava polarity. Mucukunda's sevā to the demigods is dharma at the cosmic scale; the chapter will lift him from that dharma into the higher śaraṇāgati to Bhagavān.
-
paritrastaiḥ
—
by the terrified
Past participle of pari-√tras — to tremble all around. The demigods' fear shows that their position is not absolute. The Bhāgavata's hierarchy is consistent: even devas tremble; only Bhagavān is abhaya.
-
ciram
—
for a long time
Same word as verse 11. Both his service and his sleep are 'cira' — long. Mucukunda's life is unusually elongated because Bhagavān is keeping him in reserve for this exact darśana. Time is Kṛṣṇa's instrument throughout.
Begged by Indra and the other demigods to help protect them when they were terrorized by the demons, Mucukunda defended them for a long time.

Translation
Begged by Indra and the other demigods to help protect them when they were terrorized by the demons, Mucukunda defended them for a long time.
Jīva Gosvāmī
Gauḍīya
Commentary
He was requested by Indra to protect them. He protected them for four yugas (ciram).

Analogy
A village kṣatriya called away to garrison the king's frontier — Mucukunda left his earthly kingdom to defend the demigods themselves. The asuras had overwhelmed Indra's army; Mucukunda's bow became the dharma-line between order and chaos for an age.
