  • avikṛtāḥ — actually undisintegrated
A- (privative) + vikṛta (transformed, modified). The total material energy never actually disintegrates; the apparent diversity is phenomenal, not ontological. A direct argument against the naive realist who takes the multiplicity of elements as ultimate.
  • virājam — the cosmic manifestation
From vi-√rāj — 'to shine forth, manifest'. The virāj-puruṣa is the universal form, the gross body of Bhagavān's external energy. Gauḍīya reading: virāj is real (Bhagavān's body) but is not the supreme — the puruṣottama is beyond and within it.
  • guṇaiḥ — by the modes of nature
Instrumental plural of guṇa. The three modes are the actual operators of material change; Bhagavān remains untouched by them even while in their midst. Sattva, rajas, tamas are His servants, not His conditioners.
  • tat-guṇa-agrahaḥ — untouched by their qualities
Tat (their) + guṇa (modes) + agraha (non-seizure, non-grasping). Bhagavān is in the modes (san api) yet does not absorb their nature. The classic 'lotus leaf in water' position — present but unwet. Key against the Māyāvāda mistake that liberation means escaping qualities; for the Vaiṣṇava, qualities are escaped while remaining engaged.
  • sarva-ātmanaḥ — the soul of all
Sarva (all) + ātmā (self). Bhagavān is the ātmā of every ātmā — the Paramātmā within the jīvātmā. NOT 'all is ātmā in monistic non-difference' but: He is the indweller of every individual self. Acintya-bhedābheda: one as ātmā-of-ātmās, distinct as paramātmā from jīvātmā.
  • ātma-vastunaḥ — the substance of every self
Ātmā (self) + vastu (substance, reality) + genitive. Bhagavān is the very substance underlying every conscious being. The Gauḍīya gloss: the jīva borrows its very being from Him every instant — quintessential bhedābheda.
The mahat-tattva, the total material energy, is undivided, but because of the material modes of nature, it appears to separate into earth, water, fire, air and ether. Because of the living energy [jīva-bhūta], these separated energies combine to make the cosmic manifestation visible, but in fact, before the creation of the cosmos, the total energy is already present. Therefore, the total material energy never actually enters the creation. Similarly, although You are perceived by our senses because of Your presence, You cannot be perceived by the senses, nor experienced by the mind or words [avāṅ-mānasa-gocara]. With our senses we can perceive some things, but not everything; for example, we can use our eyes to see, but not to taste. Consequently, You are beyond perception by the senses. Although in touch with the modes of material nature, You are unaffected by them. You are the prime factor in everything, the all-pervading, undivided Supersoul. For You, therefore, there is no external or internal. You never entered the womb of Devakī; rather, You existed there already.

This same understanding is explained by the Lord Himself in Bhagavad-gītā (9.4) : mayā tatam idaṁ sarvaṁ jagad-avyakta-mūrtinā mat-sthāni sarva-bhūtāni na cāhaṁ teṣv avasthitaḥ “By Me, in My unmanifested form, this entire universe is pervaded. All beings are in Me, but I am not in them.” The Supreme Personality of Godhead is not perceivable through the gross material senses. It is said that Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s name, fame, pastimes, etc., cannot be understood by material senses. Only to one who is engaged in pure devotional service under proper guidance is He revealed. As stated in Brahma-saṁhitā (5.38) : premāñjana-cchurita-bhakti-vilocanena santaḥ sadaiva hṛdayeṣu vilokayanti One can see the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Govinda, always, within oneself and outside oneself, if one has developed the transcendental loving attitude toward Him. Thus for people in general, He is not visible. In the above-mentioned verse from Bhagavad-gītā, therefore, it is said that although He is all-pervading, everywhere present, He is not conceivable by the material senses. But actually, although we cannot see Him, everything is resting in Him. As discussed in the Seventh Chapter of Bhagavad-gītā, the entire material cosmic manifestation is only a combination of His two different energies, the superior, spiritual energy and the inferior, material energy. Just as the sunshine is spread all over the universe, the energy of the Lord is spread all over the creation, and everything is resting in that energy. Yet one should not conclude that because He is spread all over He has lost His personal existence. To refute such arguments, the Lord says, “I am everywhere, and everything is in Me, but still I am aloof.” For example, a king heads a government which is but the manifestation of the king’s energy; the different governmental departments are nothing but the energies of the king, and each department is resting on the king’s power. But still one cannot expect the king to be present in every department personally. That is a crude example. Similarly, all the manifestations that we see, and everything that exists, both in this material world and in the spiritual world, are resting on the energy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The creation takes place by the diffusion of His different energies, and, as stated in the Bhagavad-gītā, He is everywhere present by His personal representation, the diffusion of His different energies. One may argue that the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who creates the whole cosmic manifestation simply by His glance, cannot come within the womb of Devakī, the wife of Vasudeva. To eradicate this argument, Vasudeva said, “My dear Lord, it is not very wonderful that You appeared within the womb of Devakī, for the creation was also made in that way. You were lying in the Causal Ocean as Mahā-Viṣṇu, and by Your breathing, innumerable universes came into existence. Then You entered into each of the universes as Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu. Then again You expanded Yourself as Kṣīrodakaśāyī Viṣṇu and entered into the heart of all living entities and entered even within the atoms. Therefore Your entrance into the womb of Devakī is understandable in the same way. You appear to have entered, but You are simultaneously all-pervading. We can understand Your entrance and nonentrance from material examples. The total material energy remains intact even after being divided into sixteen elements. The material body is nothing but a combination of the five gross elements — namely earth, water, fire, air and ether. Whenever there is a material body, it appears that such elements are newly created, but actually the elements are always existing outside of the body. Similarly, although You appear as a child in the womb of Devakī, You are also existing outside. You are always in Your abode, but still You can simultaneously expand Yourself into millions of forms. “One has to understand Your appearance with great intelligence because the material energy is also emanating from You. You are the original source of the material energy, just as the sun is the source of the sunshine. The sunshine cannot cover the sun globe, nor can the material energy — being an emanation from You — cover You. You appear to be in the three modes of material energy, but actually the three modes of material energy cannot cover You. This is understood by the highly intellectual philosophers. In other words, although You appear to be within the material energy, You are never covered by it.” We hear from the Vedic version that the Supreme Brahman exhibits His effulgence and therefore everything is illuminated. We can understand from Brahma-saṁhitā that the brahmajyoti, or the Brahman effulgence, emanates from the body of the Supreme Lord. And from the Brahman effulgence, all creation takes place. It is further stated in the Bhagavad-gītā that the Lord is the support of the Brahman effulgence. Originally He is the root cause of everything. But persons who are less intelligent think that when the Supreme Personality of Godhead comes within this material world, He accepts material qualities. Such conclusions are not mature, but are made by the less intelligent.

Translation
Commentary

This verse gives an example. You enter into Devaki’s womb just like the undifferentiated mahat tattva and other elements (ime) enter the universe but do not enter it, or appear to be created but actually are not. Though you appear to be born, you are not. The maha tattva, possessing within it various distinct elements such as earth, joining with consciousness, creates the material universe. Though the elements appear to have entered into the creation (anugata iva), because they remain present outside as well, one cannot say they have entered. Though they appear to arise within the universe, they actually existed before the universe. The elements are touched by the gunas , but you as the supreme cause are not touched by the gunas, though you enter into the universe. Though you are perceived as full of qualities which can be perceived by the intelligence, you, full of bliss, do not accept the qualities of matter, whose essence is suffering. Why? Because you are not covered by the gunas of matter. Those who are covered by the material gunas take up those qualities. The gunas do not contaminate you internally or externally. The jiva however, contacts the objects of sound and touch externally, and internally experiences lamentation, and illusion. Not only you , pervading everywhere as Paramatma (sarvatmanah), but also all objects related to you in the spiritual world (atma vastunah), such as the devotee, dhama and pastimes, are untouched by matter.

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Though you seemed to have entered mahat-tattva and other elements it is impossible. This is explained in two verses. Entering means that a person outside enters within. Since the elements already existed as the cause (with effect inherent in them) and simply manifest as the effect within the universe, they really do not enter. Since you are the supreme cause, you also do not enter or touch the universe. Thus, though you have this nature, when you enter, it is your great mercy. Śrīdhara Svāmī explains this. Guṇaiḥ can mean “with qualities” or “with objects.” You exist with qualities such as being under the control of prema. You have attraction to such qualities. These qualities can be inferred by intelligence but not realized. Na tat-samaś cābhyadhikaś ca dṛśyate: the Lord has no equal or superior. (Śvetāśvatāra Upaniṣad) Why can we not understand you? You are everything (sarvasya). You are the giver of consciousness to all beings or you spread everywhere (savrātmanaḥ). You exist by yourself. You are the highest goal which appears by itself (ātma-vastunaḥ). Therefore you are constantly filled with unlimited qualities since you are always controlled by the prema of your devotees (tad-guṇāgraḥ). Thus you have appeared as our son. This is the greatest result for us.

Śrīdhara Svāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

You do not enter the elements or, though you do not enter, you enter. An example is given. This is explained in two verses. Because at first mahat-tattva and other elements were the cause, and existed separately as coverings, they do not enter the universe (iha), though they seem to enter. The total material energy is undivided, but because of various potencies it appears as separate elements. Combining together, the elements produce the universe. Or though the energy is undivided, by manifesting your (te) māyā-śakti (tathā), the various elements produce the universe. Or because the elements exist separately, by an inconceivable method (tathā), they do not enter the universe. Or for many births I have known your glories. But today I have become successful. Starting in verse 13, Vasudeva explains. For many lives I have directly known you as most worthy of worship. This he explains in three lines. I have become successful because you have entered Devakī’s womb, though you are beyond prakṛti. His entering Devakī is further described in verses 15-16.

Kṛṣṇa never 'entered' Devakī's womb — He was already there, all-pervading yet personal, untouched by the guṇas; sense-perception cannot grasp Him, only bhakti can.
Practical Applications
  • When you catch yourself imagining Kṛṣṇa as a localized object 'out there,' pause and remember: He already pervades this room, this body, this breath — speak to Him as already-present.
  • Refuse to reduce Kṛṣṇa to 'energy,' 'consciousness,' or 'the Self' today — name Him personally in your prayer, even once, as the Supreme Person who is simultaneously inside and outside everything.
  • Apply the senses-have-limits principle concretely: when your mind insists 'if I can't perceive Him, He must not be real,' answer it as Vasudeva did — eyes cannot taste, yet taste exists; reach for Him through hearing and chanting (śravaṇa-kīrtana) instead.
Reflection Questions
  • Where am I still treating Kṛṣṇa as one more 'thing' my senses must verify before I trust Him — and what would change today if I accepted that He is already inside and outside the situation I am trying to control?
  • Which area of my life am I quietly running on the assumption that I am the cause and container of what happens there, when in truth the energies were already in place long before I arrived?
For Each Age Group
youth
  • Before opening Instagram or checking results (exam scores, crush replies, internship outcomes), pause for ten seconds and remember: Kṛṣṇa is already in this scroll, this notification, this room — He didn't 'arrive' when something good happened. Practice noticing Him in the boring seconds, not just the dopamine hits.
  • When a friend group pressures you to drink, hook up, or mock someone — recall sann api tad-guṇāgrahaḥ. Kṛṣṇa is present in the room, untouched by what is happening. You are not unwitnessed at parties just because no parent is there. Let that change what you do, not as fear, but as the dignity of being constantly accompanied.
  • Pick one course, sport, or skill where you secretly believe 'I have to do this alone, Kṛṣṇa is busy with bigger things.' This verse says He is sarvātmā — fully present in your calculus problem, your audition, your gym set. Bring Him into one specific micro-task today and see if your performance comes from a less anxious place.
householder
  • When you walk into your house tonight after work, before greeting anyone, stop at the threshold and recall: Kṛṣṇa was in this house all day while I was away. My family was never alone. This shifts how you re-enter — not as the provider arriving with fresh attention, but as one returning to a place He has been holding.
  • Make a financial or career decision this week — a job change, a big purchase, a school for the kids — by first acknowledging He is already inside the outcome, not waiting outside it. Then act with full effort and offer the result. The verse refuses the modern householder's split between 'sacred time' (morning sādhana) and 'real life' (the spreadsheet).
  • With your spouse this week, have one disagreement consciously aware that Kṛṣṇa is the antaryāmī of both of you — the same Supersoul in both hearts. Notice how it changes whether you fight to win versus fight to find truth. Real karuṇā here is serving the soul of your spouse, not just keeping the peace at the cost of avoiding things.
senior
  • Sit with the line 'You never entered the womb of Devakī; rather, You existed there already' and apply it to your own death. He will not 'come for you' at the end — He is already in the room, already in the body, already the witness of every breath you have ever taken. Practice dying into a presence that was never absent.
  • Identify one attachment — a property, a role in the family, a grudge from decades ago, a reputation — and recognize that whatever spiritual reality it pointed toward was already fully present in Kṛṣṇa. Loosening the grip is not loss; it is recognizing the sunshine was always coming from the sun, not from the object you mistook for the source.
  • Mentor one younger person this month — a grandchild, a junior at the temple, a neighbor's son — not by giving advice, but by helping them see that Kṛṣṇa is already in their college admissions, their marriage anxiety, their career confusion. Your legacy at this stage is not your accomplishments but your capacity to point others toward the One who was always there.
Common Pitfalls
  • Sliding from 'beyond the senses' into impersonalism — concluding Kṛṣṇa is a formless field rather than the Supreme Person who simply cannot be grabbed by gross perception.
  • Using the verse's 'all-pervading' language as a license to skip sādhana — telling oneself 'He is already everywhere, so I do not need to chant, hear, or serve under guidance' — when the verse and purport explicitly say He is revealed only through pure devotional service under proper guidance.
  • Mistaking the mahat-tattva analogy for pantheism — thinking the material elements ARE Kṛṣṇa, instead of seeing that He is the source untouched by the modes, simultaneously within and aloof.
Discussion Prompts
  • Vasudeva tells Kṛṣṇa, 'You did not enter Devakī's womb — You were already there.' Share with your partner: where in your own life have you mistakenly thought Kṛṣṇa 'arrived' (a kīrtana, a temple visit, a crisis) when in fact He was already present? Where do the two of you genuinely disagree about whether His presence is constant or episodic?
  • The verse insists Kṛṣṇa is sann api tad-guṇāgrahaḥ — touching the guṇas yet untouched. Take a hard test case together: a corrupt politician who chants, an abusive parent who 'does pūjā,' a celebrity guru caught in scandal. Does this verse let them off the hook? Does it let us off the hook? Push each other — do not settle for a polite middle.
  • Vasudeva uses a rigorous philosophical argument (mahat-tattva, the elements pre-existing the body) to steady himself in a moment of terror — Kaṁsa's prison, an infant about to be killed. Discuss: when has abstract tattva actually helped you in a concrete crisis, and when has it felt like a cope? Where does your group disagree on whether 'philosophy' is a real shelter or a distraction from bhakti?
Role Play

Two students. Student A is a college senior who just got rejected from medical school for the second time and has begun saying, 'Maybe Kṛṣṇa was never really with me — if He were, this wouldn't have happened.' Student B is a friend from the same bhakti-vṛkṣa group. Using SB 10.3.15-17 — that Kṛṣṇa is anāvṛta, all-pervading, never absent, with no inside or outside — Student B must console A without (a) flattening the pain into 'it's all māyā,' (b) promising A will get in next year, or (c) drifting into impersonalism ('the Self is always there'). After 5 minutes, swap. Then debrief: where did the verse actually help, and where did it feel like a verse being weaponized to shut down grief?

Objections & Responses
  • If Kṛṣṇa is everywhere already, why bother with temple worship, deity service, or pilgrimage? This verse seems to make ritual redundant — He's in my room as much as in Vṛndāvana.
Vasudeva is not arguing that Kṛṣṇa is uniformly accessible — he is arguing Kṛṣṇa is uniformly present. Those are different claims. The sun is everywhere by its rays, but you still need eyes, and you still face the sun to feel its warmest. Prabhupāda quotes Brahma-saṁhitā: premāñjana-cchurita-bhakti-vilocanena santaḥ sadaiva hṛdayeṣu vilokayanti — only the eye anointed with prema-bhakti actually sees Him. Deity worship, the holy dhāma, the verses of Bhāgavatam — these are the collyrium. Without them, omnipresence is a doctrine you assent to; with them, it becomes a Person you meet. The verse refutes the idea that He is absent; it does not refute the means by which we come to perceive Him.
  • This sounds exactly like pantheism or the 'divine spark' spirituality I hear from yoga teachers — God is in everything, everything is God, find the divinity within. Why call this Gauḍīya if it sounds like every other monism?
Read the verse again — it says the opposite of monism. mat-sthāni sarva-bhūtāni na cāhaṁ teṣv avasthitaḥ: all beings rest in Me, but I am not in them. Kṛṣṇa is sarvātmā, the Supersoul of all, but He remains a distinct, transcendent Person — Devakī's son, Yaśodā's child, the flute-player of Vṛndāvana. The pantheist collapses Kṛṣṇa into the creation; this verse maintains the creation rests on Kṛṣṇa while He stands aloof, anāvṛta, uncovered by any of it. Prabhupāda is explicit: less intelligent persons think when He appears here He becomes material. The 'divine spark' line erases the personhood that the entire Bhāgavata-dharma is built on. We are not seeking the Self; we are seeking Him, and He has a name, a form, parents, and a flute.

Five colored threads woven into one cloth seem to be five different things, but the cloth was never not-one — the loom held all five together from the start. So with the mahat-tattva and the five gross elements: they look like separate energies pieced together, but the total energy was whole before the weaving. Bhagavān is the loom; nothing was ever truly assembled or truly disassembled.

Kapila's instruction to Devahūti

In SB 3.25–33, Kapiladeva — Bhagavān as the original teacher of Sāṅkhya — instructs His mother Devahūti precisely on the order of the elements: how mahat-tattva differentiates into ahaṅkāra, then the tan-mātras, then the gross elements. The taxonomy in this verse is Kapila's taxonomy.

The Gauḍīya line preserves the Sāṅkhya enumeration but corrects its godless interpretation: the elements do not self-organize; the puruṣa-avatāra Viṣṇu glances upon prakṛti, and the cascade begins. Vasudeva's prayer is reciting Kapila's catechism back to its Author.
