Important Words
-
maghavatā
—
by Indra
An old epithet of Indra — 'the bountiful one,' he who gives rain. The irony is etched into the name: the giver of rain becomes its weaponizer. Gauḍīyas note that misused dharma-function is itself the seed of one's fall.
-
nanda - gokulam
—
the cowherd pastures of Nanda Mahārāja
gokula — 'the cow-community.' Nanda's gokula is in Gauḍīya theology the eternal abode of vātsalya-līlā; Kṛṣṇa's foster home is not a stage but a tattva. Attacking gokulam is attacking the Lord's most intimate dhāma.
-
nirmukta - bandhanāḥ
—
released from their bonds
nirmukta (released) + bandhana (bondage). The clouds are slipped off the leash that normally restrains them until pralaya. The phrasing flags Indra's transgression as cosmic mismanagement, not just personal wrath.
-
pīḍayām āsuḥ
—
they tormented
From √pīḍ — to press, oppress. The verb the Bhāgavata uses for the affliction of devotees (Prahlāda, Gajendra, the gopas). And the rule is invariant: the moment pīḍā falls on a devotee, Kṛṣṇa moves.
Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: On Indra’s order the clouds of universal destruction, released untimely from their bonds, went to the cowherd pastures of Nanda Mahārāja. There they began to torment the inhabitants by powerfully pouring down torrents of rain upon them.
Purport
The Sāṁvartaka clouds could cover the entire earth with a single vast ocean. With great strength, these clouds began flooding the simple land of Vraja.

Commentary
Ojasā means “with power.”
Śrīdhara Svāmī
Gauḍīya
Commentary
They tormented all of Vraja, with its herds of cows (gokulam). Ojasā means “with power or speed.”

Analogy
Sāṁvartaka clouds, unbound out of season, rush at Nanda's pastures with the full strength of dissolution. It is as if a man, angry at a single house, set fire to the city's gas mains — and the only one who can shut the valve is the small boy inside the house.
