Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.25.13
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa
—
O Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa
Doubled vocative. In Gauḍīya nāma-tattva, repetition is not redundancy — it is the soul refusing to leave the name. The doubled call is the literary form of śaraṇāgati.
-
bhakta - vatsala
—
O You who are affectionate to Your devotees
bhakta + vatsala (loving as a cow loves its calf). The exact epithet that Kṛṣṇa cannot resist — Gauḍīyas hold that to call Him by this name is already to invoke the response. The gopas have used the Lord's vow against His own delay.
-
go - kulam
—
the community of cows
go (cow) + kula (family). The petition specifies cows first, not selves — Vraja-style. The gopas know Govinda's heart begins with the cows; ask for them, and the rest follows.
-
trātum arhasi
—
kindly protect
Infinitive of √trai + arhasi (You are fit to). A respectful imperative — the same construction Arjuna uses in Bg 2.7. Vraja's plea is grammatically the same as Arjuna's; only the rasa differs (vātsalya/sakhya in place of śiṣya).
At the time of Lord Kṛṣṇa’s birth, Garga Muni had predicted, anena sarva-durgāṇi yūyam añjas tariṣyathā ( Bhāg. 10.8.16 ): “By His grace you will easily cross beyond all difficulties.” The residents of Vṛndāvana were confident that in such a great emergency Lord Śrī Nārāyaṇa would empower Kṛṣṇa to protect them. They accepted Kṛṣṇa as everything, and Kṛṣṇa reciprocated their love.
Remembering the words of Gargamuni, "This child will deliver you from all dangers," the inhabitants had faith that at this time of great danger, Narayana would enter Krsna and protect them. With this conviction they pray in this verse. The word deva here refers to Indra.
They repeat Kṛṣṇa’s name in order to attract him to their suffering. O most fortunate Kṛṣṇa, you are the highest form of fortune for us. You should protect our (naḥ) cows or our Vraja. Or, protect us from Indra. They do not mention Indra’s name out of hatred or thinking it sinful to utter his name. Or, you should save us who cannot counteract the anger of Indra. “What power do I have to do this?” O lord (prabho), you are endowed with all powers! We have seen you subdue Kāliya with your extraordinary powers. “But it is not proper to show one’s powers in front of devatās.” O lord, affectionate to the devotees! There is nothing that you will not do for your devotees.
They repeated Kṛṣṇa’s name in order to attract him to their suffering, because of the cold, or because his name by its nature attracts the tongue. All suffering is destroyed merely by uttering that name. O most fortunate Kṛṣṇa, you are the highest form of fortune for us. This has been explained in the seventeenth chapter concerning the forest fire. Therefore you should protect our (naḥ) cows or our Vraja. Previously they had requested Kṛṣna and Balarāma out of fear of the forest fire. Now they request only Kṛṣṇa. Only he could save them from this huge danger or they had most affection for him alone.
The gopas call out 'Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa' twice — the way a child calls its mother, repeating the name until it is the only sound in the body. They name His epithet too: bhakta-vatsala, affectionate to His devotees. They have placed the question in a form whose answer is already inside the name.
When Draupadī was being unrobed in the Kuru assembly, both hands raised in surrender, she called Kṛṣṇa's name across the kingdoms. Kṛṣṇa, then at Dvārakā, supplied an inexhaustible sari.
The gopas here repeat 'Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa' in the same register. The Gauḍīyas mark such double-naming as a signature of ārta-bhakti — when the soul has run out of plans, the Name doubles itself and arrives at the same time as the rescue.
