  • sattvam - viśuddham — transcendental existence
Sattva-viśuddha — purified existence, śuddha-sattva. Distinguished sharply by Gauḍīyas from sāttva-guṇa: the avatāra is not of even sāttvika prakṛti, but of pure transcendental substance beyond the modes.
  • sthitau — during maintenance
Locative — 'in [the cosmic phase of] maintenance.' Avatāras appear in the maintenance-phase to keep the path of return open. Cosmology is the calendar of His mercy.
  • veda - kriyā — Vedic ritual activities
Veda-kriyā — the prescribed yajñas, saṁskāras, and dharmic acts of the Vedic system. The verse explicitly affirms karma-kāṇḍa as a valid first stage; Gauḍīyas do not despise it, they relativize it under bhakti.
  • yoga — yoga practice
Yoga here in the technical aṣṭāṅga sense — the eight-limbed path. The verse positions yoga as one rung on the ladder. Bhakti subsumes but does not erase yoga; the avatāra teaches each at its appropriate level.
  • samādhibhiḥ — by samādhis
Samādhi — absorption. Plural here: many kinds of meditative absorption serve the Lord. The Bhāgavatam's pluralism is structural — many practices, one destination. The destination is Him.
O Lord, during the time of maintenance You manifest several incarnations, all with transcendental bodies, beyond the material modes of nature. When You appear in this way, You bestow all good fortune upon the living entities by teaching them to perform Vedic activities such as ritualistic ceremonies, mystic yoga, austerities, penances, and ultimately samādhi, ecstatic absorption in thoughts of You. Thus You are worshiped by the Vedic principles.

As stated in Bhagavad-gītā (18.3) , yajña-dāna-tapaḥ-karma na tyājyam: the Vedic ritualistic ceremonies, charity, austerity and all such prescribed duties are never to be given up. Yajño dānaṁ tapaś caiva pāvanāni manīṣiṇām (18.5): even one who is very much advanced in spiritual realization must still execute the Vedic principles. Even in the lowest stage, the karmīs are advised to work for the sake of the Lord. yajñārthāt karmaṇo ’nyatra loko ’yaṁ karma-bandhanaḥ “Work done as a sacrifice for Viṣṇu has to be performed, otherwise work binds one to this material world.” ( Bg. 3.9 ) The words yajñārthāt karmaṇaḥ indicate that while performing all kinds of duties, one should remember that these duties should be performed to satisfy the Supreme Lord ( sva-karmaṇā tam abhyarcya ). According to Vedic principles, there must be divisions of human society ( cātur-varṇyaṁ mayā sṛṣṭam ). There should be brāhmaṇas, kṣatriyas, vaiśyas and śūdras, and everyone should learn to worship the Supreme Personality of Godhead ( tam abhyarcya ). This is real human society, and without this system we are left with animal society. The modern activities of human society are described in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam as the activities of go-khara, cows and asses ( sa eva go-kharaḥ ). Everyone is acting in a bodily concept of life involving society, friendship and love for the improvement of economic and political conditions, and thus all activities are enacted in ignorance. The Supreme Personality therefore comes to teach us how to act according to the Vedic principles. In this Age of Kali, the Supreme Personality of Godhead appeared as Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and preached that in this age the Vedic activities cannot be systematically performed because people are so fallen. He gave this recommendation from the śāstras: harer nāma harer nāma harer nāmaiva kevalam kalau nāsty eva nāsty eva nāsty eva gatir anyathā “In this age of quarrel and hypocrisy the only means of deliverance is chanting the holy name of the Lord. There is no other way. There is no other way. There is no other way.” The Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is therefore teaching people all over the world how to chant the Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra, and this has proved very much effective in all places at all times. The Supreme Personality of Godhead appears in order to teach us Vedic principles intended for understanding Him ( vedaiś ca sarvair aham eva vedyaḥ ). We should always know that when Kṛṣṇa and Lord Caitanya appeared, They appeared in śuddha-sattva bodies. One should not mistake the body of Kṛṣṇa or Caitanya Mahāprabhu to be a material body like ours, for Kṛṣṇa and Caitanya Mahāprabhu appeared as needed for the benefit of the entire human society. Out of causeless mercy, the Lord appears in different ages in His original śuddha-sattva transcendental body to elevate human society to the spiritual platform upon which they can truly benefit. Unfortunately, modern politicians and other leaders stress the bodily comforts of life ( yasyātma-buddhiḥ kuṇape tri-dhātuke ) and concentrate on the activities of this ism and that ism, which they describe in different kinds of flowery language. Essentially such activities are the activities of animals ( sa eva go-kharaḥ ). We should learn how to act from Bhagavad-gītā, which explains everything for human understanding. Thus we can become happy even in this Age of Kali.

Commentary

In verse 29 there was mention of the Lord’s pure forms appearing in the world of moving and non-moving entities. That verse says that the purpose of the Lord’s appearance is to help the devotees. In verse 30-33 the purity of bhakti has been mentioned. In verse 32, there is the hint that by attachment to the Lord’s feet the devotee also attains liberation as a secondary result. The present verse is spoken to show that that the real purpose of the Lord’s appearance in the world is to establish bhakti. You accept a purely spiritual body beyond material contamination (visuddha sattvam). What type of form? In maintaining the world (sthitau) you accept a body which brings about (upayana) benefit (sreya) for the living entities. What is that benefit? Veda kriya yoga tapasa samadhi. The brahmacaris study the Vedas, the grhasthas perform kriya yoga, the vanaprasthis perform tapas and the sannyasis sit in samadhi. Men worship (arhanam sam ihate) you through their activities in these four asramas. This is the benefit that you bring about by your appearance. If one does not accept your spiritual form he cannot attain perfection.

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Though you have a body which is the supreme cause as mentioned in SB 3.9.3, you manifest a body of śuddha-sattava in this world. This viśuddha-sattva body is beyond māyā, arising from the cic-cakti and is not different from you through your prakāśa-śakti. You appear to protect the world (sthitau). Though you have a variety of eternal bodies, you take shelter of a particular body for protecting the world at a particular time. For instance, though a person has various senses, he takes shelter of the eye to see or the ear to hear. After appearing, in giving protection, these forms produce happiness for the living beings even through meditation. Your body is like a gift given in compassion for unlimited beings, which yields results of pious acts and other goals up to prema. Or your body is the best gift, the highest bliss. etasyaivānandasyānyāni bhūtāni mātrām upajīvanti By the Lord full of bliss all beings live. Bṛhad-āraṇyaka Upaniṣad 4.3.32 He gives results to the respective worshippers. People worship him through the dharmas of the four āśramas by offering the Vedas etc. By mentioning these types of worship it is implied that the worship can take place even without the presence of the Lord, just by aiming for him. By that body, all people in the four āśramas (brahmacārī—veda, gṛhasthas—kriyā-yoga, vanaprasthas—tapas and sannyasīs—samādhi) directly (sam) undertake (īhate) worship. However if one worships through the Vedas or other methods without aiming at the body of the Lord, it is not direct worship. That is suggested. By this execution of worship by the four āśramas others also gain perfection. For this reason it said that this is the best method for all beings (śārīrināṁ). Śrīdhara Svāmī says that without aiming for the body of the Lord, one cannot even attain the results of karma-yoga actions. It is said: svargāpavargayoḥ puṁsāṁ rasāyāṁ bhuvi sampadām sarvāsām api siddhīnāṁ mūlaṁ tac-caraṇārcanam Devotional service to his lotus feet is the root cause of all the perfections a person can find in heaven, in liberation, in the subterranean regions and on earth. Commentary

You take shelter of a pure form for protecting. The method is explained. It is the best gift for the unlimited jīvas with moving and non-moving bodies, giving them dharmas through the Vedas. By this body, the people of the four āśramas engage in your worship. By engaging in their dharmas they become purified in mind. This is the method of worship. By this worship by the four āśramas all others who are related to them (moving and non-moving entities) also become perfect. Or śreya upāyanam can mean that by which one attains (ayanam) the best goals. The Vedas etc. teach bhakti to you. Otherwise the four āśramas would never attain bhakti. Or śreya upāyanam means he to whom the best offerings are made. Becoming your devotees, using the Vedas which are your form (vapuḥ) as offerings, the people of the four āśramas perform your worship. Or you take shelter of a form which allows one to quickly attain (upāyanam) prema or Vaikuṇṭha. How? Through offering one’s dharma, one attains worship of the form, which allows attainment of the highest goal. Or by manifesting sattva-guṇa, everything is attained, including service to you. You manifest (śrayate) sattva-guṇa. By that sattva, the body of all jīvas (vapuḥ) becomes the best means of attaining everything (śreya upāyanam), by the Vedas etc. Or by Vedas people perform their dharmas and all members of the āśramas become your devotees. Yena can refer to both the form and the Vedas.

Kṛṣṇa descends in śuddha-sattva form during maintenance to teach us Vedic action — yajña, yoga, tapas, samādhi — all aimed at worshiping Him.
Practical Applications
  • Begin one duty today by silently offering it to Kṛṣṇa with the intention sva-karmaṇā tam abhyarcya — work as worship, not as bondage.
  • Refuse the go-khara mentality of working only for bodily and economic improvement; ask before each task whom this action is actually serving.
  • Chant a fixed number of Hare Kṛṣṇa rounds today as the yuga-dharma Caitanya Mahāprabhu prescribed when full Vedic ritual is no longer feasible.
Reflection Questions
  • Which of my daily duties — work, study, family obligations — am I performing without any conscious sense that they are an offering to Kṛṣṇa, and what would change today if I added that intention?
  • Where am I quietly treating Kṛṣṇa's appearance and form as 'just another symbol,' rather than as the śuddha-sattva descent of the Supreme Person who came specifically to teach me how to act?
For Each Age Group
youth
  • When a professor, a coach, or a campus org asks you to do something that feels like real duty — not just résumé padding — treat it as veda-kriyā: do it as offering, not as performance. Before you start the assignment, the practice, the shift, say once silently: 'Kṛṣṇa, this is for You.'
  • Pick one tapas suited to your stage — a fixed phone-down hour before sleep, no scrolling during meals, no gossip about a particular friend group for a week. Austerity is not punishment; it is the muscle that lets samādhi (focused absorption) become possible during exams and deep study.
  • Notice the people around you who are living entirely in the bodily concept — chasing looks, status, the next hookup, the next dopamine hit. Do not look down on them; ask honestly where you are doing the same. Then chant a fixed number of rounds of Hare Kṛṣṇa each morning before opening any app. This is the one practice this verse-and-purport pair actually prescribes for our age.
householder
  • Run your career as yajña, not as identity: every major work decision (the job offer, the promotion, the side project, the move) should pass the question 'does this make it easier or harder for my family to worship the Supreme Personality of Godhead?' Money and position are inputs to that question, not the question itself.
  • Restore one Vedic kriyā in your home that you have quietly dropped — a weekly fire of Hare Kṛṣṇa kīrtana with the children, an offered meal before eating, a Bhāgavatam verse read aloud at the dinner table. The verse says the Lord descends to teach these things; do not let your household be the one where the teaching lands and is ignored.
  • Identify the one place where you, as a parent or spouse, have slipped into go-khara mode — making decisions about schools, weddings, vacations, retirement purely on bodily-comfort grounds with no reference to Kṛṣṇa. Bring that decision back into the family council with the explicit question: what would tavārhaṇam look like here?
senior
  • Your sādhana ladder now narrows. The kriyā and yoga and tapas of earlier āśramas have done their work; the verse's final word — samādhi, absorption — is your actual assignment for the years that remain. Set a fixed daily japa quota and protect it the way you once protected meetings.
  • Mentor at least one younger person — a grandchild, a junior colleague, a neighbor — into one specific practice from this verse: an offered meal, a chanted round, a read chapter. Do not lecture; do it together. Legacy in this tradition is not the estate you leave; it is the sādhana you transmit.
  • Loosen one attachment this month that you have been postponing — a possession, a grudge, a position on a board, a role in the family business. The Lord descended in śuddha-sattva precisely so that we, at the end, could let the material body and its acquisitions go without panic. Practice the letting-go now, in small reps, so that the final one is not the first.
Common Pitfalls
  • Reading 'Vedic activities' as a museum-piece — admiring yajña, yoga, tapas, and samādhi from a distance while neglecting the one practice the verse's logic culminates in for this age: chanting the holy name.
  • Treating Kṛṣṇa's transcendental body as a poetic metaphor or a material form like ours, instead of recognizing it as śuddha-sattva — and thereby drifting into the impersonalist habit of worshiping 'the Absolute' rather than Him personally.
  • Using the verse's high language about samādhi and absorption to bypass the prescribed duties of one's varṇa and āśrama, imagining oneself 'beyond ritual,' when the purport explicitly says yajña-dāna-tapaḥ-karma na tyājyam — these are never to be given up.
Discussion Prompts
  • The verse says the Lord descends in śuddha-sattva bodies to teach Vedic action — yajña, yoga, tapas, samādhi. Share with your partner: which of these four have you actually attempted, and which do you secretly dismiss as 'not for people like me'? Where does that dismissal come from — humility, laziness, or modern prejudice?
  • Prabhupāda is blunt: a society without varṇāśrama is go-khara — cows and asses. Disagree honestly in your group: is this hyperbole, or a literal diagnosis of where you live and work? If literal, what one feature of your daily life is most go-khara, and what would it look like to act otherwise tomorrow morning?
  • The verse offers a ladder — kriyā, yoga, tapas, samādhi — culminating in absorption in Kṛṣṇa. Caitanya Mahāprabhu cut the ladder and gave the holy name. In your group, argue both sides: when does insisting on the 'simple' chanting become an excuse to skip the disciplines the verse names? When does insisting on the disciplines become a refusal of the mercy?
Role Play

Two students pair up. Student A is a software engineer in their thirties who has just told their family they want to quit their job to 'focus on spiritual life' — drop the career, drop the savings plan, chant more, attend the temple full-time. Student B is their older cousin, a serious devotee of twenty years, who has been asked to give honest counsel. Using this verse, B must neither rubber-stamp the renunciation nor dismiss the spiritual impulse — B has to show, from SB 10.2.34, why the Lord Himself comes to teach veda-kriyā-yoga-tapaḥ-samādhi as a graded path, and how tavārhaṇam (worship of Him) is meant to be performed through one's prescribed duties, not by abandoning them prematurely. After ten minutes, swap roles and run it again with A as a college senior whose parents want them to take a corporate job they find soul-deadening.

Objections & Responses
  • This whole framing is feudal. Dividing humanity into brāhmaṇas, kṣatriyas, vaiśyas and śūdras and calling everything else 'animal society' is exactly the kind of religious arrogance that has caused immense harm. Why should a modern reader accept this?
Hear the objection fully — the harm done in the name of birth-based caste is real, and Prabhupāda himself was sharp about that distortion. But cātur-varṇyaṁ mayā sṛṣṭam in the Gītā is guṇa-karma-vibhāgaśaḥ — by quality and work, not by birth. The verse is not defending a hereditary hierarchy; it is saying that human life has a structure: some are suited to study and teach, some to protect and govern, some to produce and trade, some to serve and support — and every one of these can become tavārhaṇam, worship of the Lord, when offered to Him. The 'animal society' diagnosis is not directed at people of any class; it is directed at any arrangement where every activity, top to bottom, is for bodily comfort alone. Test it honestly against your own workplace before rejecting it.
  • The verse celebrates ritual, yoga, austerity, samādhi — a serious sādhana ladder. But then Prabhupāda swerves and says in Kali-yuga none of this works, just chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. Isn't that a convenient bait-and-switch that lets people skip the hard work the verse actually praises?
It looks like a swerve only if you read 'just chant' as 'do nothing else.' Caitanya Mahāprabhu did not abolish veda-kriyā-yoga-tapaḥ-samādhi; He identified the one practice in this age that contains all of them in seed and makes them accessible to fallen people who cannot perform them in their classical form. The chanting is itself yajña (saṅkīrtana-yajña), itself tapas (the tongue restrained to the holy name), itself samādhi (absorption in Kṛṣṇa's name, form, qualities, pastimes). Far from skipping the verse's ladder, the holy name is the ladder folded into a single rung that even we can climb. The test is empirical: chant attentively, daily, for a fixed number of rounds, and see whether the qualities the verse names — purification, steadiness, absorption — actually arise. They do.

A king visits his provinces in different costumes — sometimes as warrior, sometimes as scholar, sometimes as cowherd — but in every guise he distributes the same imperial coin. The Lord's avatāras, the demigods say, distribute exactly such a coin: the means of returning to Him, minted in many shapes for many hands.
