  • dāva-agniḥ — forest fire
Compound: dāva (forest) + agni (fire). A standard śāstric image for saṁsāra itself — saṁsāra-dāvānala-līḍha-loka, sings the Gurv-aṣṭakam. The word activates an entire Gauḍīya semantic field: the world is a forest fire and the guru/Lord is its only quencher.
  • śuci-vana — in the summer forest
Compound: śuci (the hot, bright season) + vana (forest). The fire arises in the season of dryness — in saṁsāra-terms, when the senses are parched. The detail is doctrinally precise: spiritual fires erupt exactly when the inner moisture of remembrance has dried.
  • sarvataḥ — on all sides
Adverb of total encirclement. There is no horizontal escape. Gauḍīyas read sarvataḥ as cancelling every lateral solution — political, philosophical, ascetic. The only direction left is vertical: śaraṇāgati.
  • suptam — sleeping
Past participle of √svap. The Vrajavāsīs are unaware — and yet are protected. The verse quietly teaches: even the devotee's lapses of vigilance are covered, provided the Lord is near. Cf. Gajendra: even his stumble into the lake became his cry to Bhagavān.
During the night, while all the people of Vṛndāvana were asleep, a great fire blazed up within the dry summer forest. The fire surrounded the inhabitants of Vraja on all sides and began to scorch them.

Śrīla Sanātana Gosvāmī and Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura have commented that perhaps a loyal friend of Kāliya had assumed the form of a forest fire to avenge his friend, or perhaps the forest fire was manifest by a demon who was a follower of Kaṁsa’s.

Translation
During the night, while all the people of Vṛndāvana were asleep, a great fire blazed up within the dry summer forest. The fire surrounded the inhabitants of Vraja on all sides and began to scorch them.
Commentary

Suci means summer. A forest fire arose in forest dried by the summer heat and surrounded the sleeping cows and inhabitants of Vraja. Some say that the forest fire was one of Kaliya’s friends, and a follower of Kamsa.

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

That night (tadā) a fire arising from a dry forest of summer (śuci) arose. Some say the fire was a friend of Kāliya or some demon follower of Kaṁsa.

Related verses

While Vraja sleeps, the dry summer forest catches fire on every side. This is saṁsāra in a single image: the body that loves Bhagavān still lives inside a flammable world, surrounded on every side by burning. The fire arises not because the love was insufficient but because this is the kind of place this is. The point is not to prevent the fire; it is to know Who to call.

The two forest fires of Vraja

The Bhāgavatam records two dāvāgni-līlās: this one at SB 10.17, and a second at SB 10.19 when the boys are chasing the calves. Both times Kṛṣṇa swallows the fire; both times He saves the same boys.

Gauḍīyas read the repetition deliberately. The flammable forest is not an exception to Vraja-life; it is its weather. Kṛṣṇa-the-fire-swallower is the standing solution, not a one-time miracle. Surrender is the right reflex because the fire keeps coming.
