Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.17.18
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
dehi-dānam
—
give charity
Imperative of √dā (to give) + dāna (the act of giving). The brāhmaṇas issue an instruction; Nanda obeys gladly. Gauḍīyas note: charity here is not penance but thanksgiving — the joy of having been protected demands an outlet.
-
kṛṣṇa-nirmukti-hetave
—
for the sake of Kṛṣṇa's safety
Compound dative: Kṛṣṇa + nirmukti (release, freedom from danger) + hetave (for the purpose of). The father gives so that the son will be free in future too. A vātsalya-dāna — the giving is itself the mother-father's love.
-
prīta-manāḥ
—
with a satisfied mind
Compound: prīta (satisfied, gladdened) + manas (mind). Nanda's mind is already at rest before he gives. Bhagavān's protection has restored his peace; the dāna flows from fullness, not anxiety.
-
gāḥ-suvarṇam
—
cows and gold
Two accusatives. The traditional Vedic pair of dāna-objects: living wealth and metallic wealth, both given. Nanda is the king of cowherds — his giving is shaped by his vocation. Vraja's wealth-form is the cow itself.
“Ah! Being joyful you should perform a great festival.”
Nanda Mahārāja's response to the news of Kṛṣṇa's deliverance is to give cows and gold to the brāhmaṇas — gratitude that travels outward in concentric circles. The father saved by Bhagavān's protection of his son repays it onto the brāhmaṇas, who repay it through their blessings. Bhakti's economy is not hoarding-of-rescue but its onward distribution.
After Kṛṣṇa's protection saw the Pāṇḍavas through every disaster, Yudhiṣṭhira's Rājasūya in SB 10.74 and Mahābhārata Sabhā-parva became one immense outpouring of charity to brāhmaṇas — gold, cows, jewels, land. The king who had been saved gave back the rescue in measurable wealth.
Gauḍīyas read both episodes the same way: a heart that has tasted Bhagavān's protection cannot keep its goods. Cows and gold start flowing outward without internal calculation.
