the river Yamunā .
  • kārya - mānuṣaḥ — playing the role of a human being
Compound: kārya (acting, behaving) + mānuṣa (human). Bhagavān's līlā is described in self-referential vocabulary: He is 'playing human.' Gauḍīya: His humanity is acted, His divinity essential — narahari-līlā.
  • samudram - yāhi — go to the ocean
Imperative: samudra (ocean) + yāhi (go). The serpent's original home. Bhagavān does not destroy place but restores order — Kāliya belongs in the sea, not in Vraja's river.
  • go - nṛbhiḥ - bhujyate - nadī — the river is enjoyed by cows and humans
Compound + clause: go (cow) + nṛ (human) + bhujyate (is enjoyed). The verse's punchline. The river is for use of cows and people — for Vraja-life. The chapter ends where it began: with the Yamunā's restoration.
Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: After hearing Kāliya’s words, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who was acting the role of a human being, replied: O serpent, you may not remain here any longer. Go back to the ocean immediately, accompanied by your retinue of children, wives, other relatives and friends. Let this river be enjoyed by the cows and humans.
Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura Gauḍīya
Translation
Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: After hearing Kāliya's words, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who was acting the role of a human being, replied: O serpent, you may not remain here any longer. Go back to the ocean immediately, accompanied by your retinue of children, wives, other relatives and friends. Let this river be enjoyed by the cows and humans.
Commentary

Though difficult for Brahma or Siva to do, Krsna was able to punish Kaliya, just by using a human form (karya manusa). He did not hold his sankha and cakra for this act. Karya can also mean pastime. Thus karya manusa can mean "he who takes a form of a human for performing sweet pastimes." Or karya manusa can mean "Brahman which takes the form of a human." Or karya manusa can mean "the lord who performs activities among humans." Karya manusa said, "You must go from here along with your children and wives to the ocean, because the cows and cowherd men use this Yamuna river, with its water and banks filled with grass, leaves and fruits."

Jīva Gosvāmī Gauḍīya
Commentary

Hearing this, Kṛṣṇa replied. He speaks with the understanding that whatever he says, Kāliya should do. Bhagavān appears in his own human form to benefit the humans (kārya-mānuṣaḥ). Or, he performs play (kārya) with human-like pastimes (mānuṣaḥ), not with a material body. Or, he spreads his prema (kārya) to all men (mānuṣaḥ) since humans are the principle objects when he appears among humans. This means that it is improper for snakes to be present at the main abode of the Lord, Vṛndāvana. Or, he has devotees (mānuṣaḥ) worthy of respect (ārya) by even Brahmā (ka). To make them happy, you should not remain here. O snake! It is improper to remain here. This shows Kāliya’s ability to move (since sarpa means to crawl). He should go with his relatives. The word sva indicates that they had similar poison and also shows they were dependent on him.

Related verses

Bhagavān, acting as a human being, accepts the surrender. Go now, He says — back to the ocean with all your kin. Let the cows and humans of Vraja drink My river again. The order is mercy in working clothes: not destruction, not even prolonged exile — a relocation to a wider water. The river is given back to the village.
