Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.16.53
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
vidhehi
—
please order / arrange
Imperative of vi+√dhā. The wives invite Bhagavān to command them. This is goptṛtve varaṇam — accepting Him as ruler — one of the six limbs of śaraṇāgati.
-
kiṅkarīṇām
—
of the maidservants
Genitive plural of kiṅkarī. Literally 'one who says kiṁ kara' — 'what should I do?'. The Vaiṣṇava self-designation par excellence. Gauḍīya: even the gopīs refer to themselves this way.
-
śraddhayā
—
with faith
From √śrad+dhā — to place the heart on. The hinge of bhakti — Gītā 9.3: aśraddadhānāḥ puruṣā... Without śraddhā, no orders bear fruit; with śraddhā, all orders give freedom.
-
mucyate - sarvataḥ - bhayāt
—
is freed from all fear
Phrase: mucyate (is freed) + sarvataḥ (from all) + bhayāt (from fear). The Vaiṣṇava promise: surrender produces abhaya. The fear-poisoned lake at the chapter's opening is being reversed.
The surrender of Kāliya’s wives was now complete, and Lord Kṛṣṇa immediately gave them His mercy, as described in the following verses.
"Then, take your husband. I am giving, but I make this order, which you must follow." "Yes, we will follow . Give us the order (vidhehi)." The order is revealed in a later verse.
What is to be done by your order, please instruct (vidhehi) to your servants. Or, what is to be done by your order by your servants, please instruct us. Because doing action according to your order with faith, one is freed from all fear. Or, what is executed with faith is free of fear. Vai indicates “well-known.” One is free of fear in all cases or from all beings. Or, the phrase “free of fear” can indicate attaining the planet of the Lord.
Tell us, Your maidservants, what to do. Anyone who follows Your order in faith is freed from all fear. The wives complete their śaraṇāgati: not merely begging mercy but offering themselves as kiṅkarīs — servants. Bhakti-as-end has been reached inside the chapter; ask the rest of the chapter to merely confirm it.
When Caitanya Mahāprabhu interrogated Rāmānanda Rāya about the ultimate aim of life, Rāmānanda climbed the ladder: varṇāśrama, karma-tyāga, jñāna, jñāna-miśra-bhakti, śuddha-bhakti, dāsya, sakhya, vātsalya, mādhurya. At each step Mahāprabhu said: 'Eho bāhya, āge kaha āra' — this is external, go further.
The Nāga-patnīs in this verse reach dāsya — kiṅkarī, maidservant. It is not the highest rasa (mādhurya is), but it is far above their starting position. Within one chapter, śaraṇāgati has climbed from rakṣ-rakṣa (protect us) to vidhehi (command us).
