Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.15.51
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
-
sampratīta smṛtayaḥ
—
regaining perfectly their memory
sam (fully) + pratīta (recognized) + smṛti (memory). Gauḍīya: smṛti is one of the nine limbs of bhakti (smaraṇa). The boys regain smṛti not only of their own lives but, by Gauḍīya reading, of who Kṛṣṇa is. Memory of Bhagavān is bhakti's bedrock.
-
samutthāya
—
rising up
Absolutive of sam + ud + √sthā — to fully arise. Gauḍīya: utthāna means rising; samutthāya is the full rising. The same root that gives ut-thāpana — the priest's act of awakening the Deity each morning. The Lord here performs ut-thāpana on His devotees.
-
jala-antikāt
—
from out of the water
jala (water) + antika (near, edge). They rise from the water's edge. Gauḍīya: the spatial detail matters — they were never deep in the river, only at its edge. The poison was at the surface; their fall was at the bank. The Lord meets them where they fell.
-
su-vismitāḥ
—
very surprised
su (very) + vismita (astonished). Gauḍīya: vismaya — astonishment — is one of the sthāyī-bhāvas, the foundational emotions. In the gopī-rasa, vismaya is constant; the cowherds taste a small dose here.
-
vīkṣamāṇāḥ parasparam
—
looking at one another
vīkṣamāṇa (looking) + paraspara (mutual). Gauḍīya: bhakti-saṅga begins with looking at one another in shared astonishment — the gaze among devotees who have all received the same grace. The mutual look creates the Vraja-community.
They rose from the bank in great astonishment. "We were dead. How did we come back to life? What medicine or mantra for removing poison was used?" They looked at one another, saying with their eyes, "Friend , do you know? What is the secret?" Then one friend answered with a glance, "I know the cause of our rescue. Listen. I remember the words of Gargacarya at the name giving ceremony of Krsna and Balarama: this child will save you from all dangers very easily. This is the secret." Saying this with his glance to the other boys, they all remembered (smrtayah) with absorption (sam) the object Krsna (pratita). By this they all became astonished.
As if coming out of deep sleep they all suddenly rose at once. Because of this they looked at each other, since that is nature of astonishment.
Sleepers who do not know they fell asleep wake up confused, staring at one another, recalling nothing of the drift but everything of the wake. The boys and cows rise from the Yamunā's edge fully conscious, fully remembering — astonished, looking at each other. The verse names the gap between forgetting and remembering, with no perceived bridge. The Lord built the bridge; they wake on the far side.
