O unconquerable Lord, You engage Your illusory energy, composed of three modes, to unleash, maintain and devastate the inconceivable manifest cosmos, all within Your own self. As the supreme superintendent of māyā, You appear to be situated in the interaction of the modes of nature; however, You are never affected by material activities. In fact, You are directly engaged in Your own eternal, spiritual bliss, and thus You cannot be accused of any material infection.

The word durvibhāvyam is significant here. The ultimate cause of the creation, maintenance and annihilation of the material world is certainly inconceivable even for the greatest mundane scientists, who waste their lives in useless and fruitless speculation. Yet Mahā-Viṣṇu, who is the secondary expansion of an expansion of the Supreme Lord, Kṛṣṇa, sees the entire cosmos to be like an insignificant atom. So what hope is there for foolish so-called scientists who try to understand Kṛṣṇa by their ridiculous experimental power? Thus the word anavadya is used. No one can find fault or discrepancy in the body, character, activities or instructions of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The Lord is never materially ignorant; therefore He never exhibits cruelty, laziness, foolishness, blindness or material intoxication. Similarly, because the Lord is never polluted by material passion, He never exhibits material pride, lamentation, yearning or violence. And since the Lord is free from material goodness, He never attempts to peacefully enjoy the material world with a sublime materialistic mentality.

Lord Kṛṣṇa, as stated here ( sve sukhe ’vyavahite ’bhirataḥ ), is eternally busy, day and night, in His transcendental abode, relishing the inconceivable loving devotion of His innumerable associates. The Lord is being embraced and is embracing. He is joking and is hearing the joking of His loved ones. The Lord is walking through forests full of fruits and flowers, playing in the nectarean river Yamunā and taking part in His most confidential transcendental loving affairs with the cowherd girls of Vṛndāvana. These pastimes in Kṛṣṇaloka and on other Vaikuṇṭha planets are eternal, faultless and an ocean of spiritual happiness. The Lord never descends to the dry platform of relative material happiness. The infinite Personality of Godhead has nothing to gain from anyone; thus fruitive activity cannot possibly exist within the Lord.

Translation
O unconquerable Lord! You create, maintain and destroy the inconceivable universe by māyā made of the three guṇas, all within your own self. You are situated in the guṇas of māyā but are not contaminated by your actions since you, who cannot be criticized, are engaged in unobstructed bliss. We, who are also controllers, praise you because you are the supreme, inconceivable controller. You create, maintain and destroy the universe (vyaktam). You are situated within the guṇas of the universe as the controller of māyā. Though you carry out creation and destruction you are not contaminated by those actions because you are engaged in your unobstructed happiness. Since the jīva is covered by ignorance in his happiness, he suffers because of no bliss. Thus he is contaminated by his actions. You cannot be criticized (anavadyaḥ) but the jīva can.
Kṛṣṇa wields the three-mode māyā to create, sustain and dissolve cosmos yet remains untouched, ever absorbed in His own faultless spiritual bliss.
Practical Applications
  • Notice today when you assume the world's chaos must drag you down, and remember the Lord directs all three guṇas without being stained by any.
  • Before any task, mentally place Kṛṣṇa as the unaffected superintendent, and act as His instrument rather than as the proprietor of outcomes.
  • Refuse to evaluate Kṛṣṇa's instructions or activities by mundane moral arithmetic, recalling that anavadya means no fault can be found in Him.
Reflection Questions
  • Where am I quietly judging Kṛṣṇa by the standards of a conditioned soul, forgetting that He stands wholly outside the guṇas He is wielding?
  • What would change in my day if I truly accepted that the Lord is never seeking pleasure from this world because He is already abhirata in His own sve sukhe?
For Each Age Group
youth
  • When exam results or follower counts swing your mood, remind yourself that even the cosmos rises and falls under Kṛṣṇa's guṇas while He stays unmoved — borrow a little of that steadiness.
  • Refuse the campus reflex of blaming "the system" for everything; recognize the three guṇas at work and your own choice of which mode to feed today.
  • When friends mock the idea of a personal God, do not retreat into safe "universe" language — stand on the verse's point that Kṛṣṇa is personal, blissful, and faultless.
householder
  • In family and work decisions, act as a careful manager within the modes but stop pretending you are the ultimate creator, maintainer, or destroyer of your household — that role is Kṛṣṇa's.
  • When career setbacks or financial losses hit, refuse the narrative that the Lord has failed you; the same hand that built also dissolves, and He remains anavadya.
  • Build a daily moment where you formally hand the day's results back to Kṛṣṇa, training the family to see Him as the unaffected superintendent rather than a cosmic vending machine.
senior
  • As the body weakens, meditate on the Lord who is eternally abhirata in His own bliss, and let that be the model for a mind no longer chasing material happiness.
  • When mentoring younger family members, point them past "the universe" and "energy" toward the personal Kṛṣṇa described in this verse, who is faultless and self-satisfied.
  • Loosen attachments by reviewing how many "creations" of your life Kṛṣṇa has already maintained and dissolved, and trust the same hand for what remains.
Common Pitfalls
  • Sliding into impersonalism by treating Kṛṣṇa's transcendence as a formless neutrality rather than the bliss-filled personal activity of sve sukhe.
  • Demanding that the Lord justify Himself by material ethics, forgetting the verse's declaration that He is anavadya and untouched by karma.
  • Concluding that because Kṛṣṇa is detached we should become emotionally cold, rather than learning to act within the guṇas without being stained by them.
Discussion Prompts
  • Share one concrete area of life where you instinctively credit māyā with power independent of Kṛṣṇa, and let the group push back.
  • Discuss the difference between Kṛṣṇa's being abhirata in His own bliss and a person who is simply emotionally self-sufficient — where does the analogy break down?
  • If the Lord is truly anavadya, how should we respond when a sincere seeker raises a moral objection about something He does in śāstra?
Role Play

A college classmate, after one class on this verse, says: "So your God starts wars, floods, and pandemics through His māyā, but you still call Him faultless? That sounds like a rigged system." One student plays the classmate, another the practitioner; the practitioner must answer from this verse without retreating into impersonalism or abandoning Kṛṣṇa's personhood.

Objections & Responses
  • If Kṛṣṇa creates, maintains, and destroys everything through māyā, He is the ultimate cause of suffering — calling Him "unaffected" is just theological evasion.
The verse precisely addresses this: He is tad-guṇa-sthaḥ, appearing situated in the modes, yet na ajyate — never bound by their reactions, because He acts from sve sukhe, not from any material need. A judge who sentences a criminal is not himself a criminal; far more so, the Lord, who has nothing to gain from the cosmos, is not implicated in its dualities.
  • This sounds like a convenient escape clause — every other agent is bound by karma, but your God conveniently isn't.
Bondage by karma comes from desire to enjoy or avoid the fruits of action. Kṛṣṇa is already abhirata, fully satisfied in His own spiritual happiness, so there is no hidden motive for Him to manipulate the cosmos for personal gain. The exemption is not arbitrary; it follows from His being anavadya and self-complete, which is exactly what "Supreme" means.
