Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 11.6.24
Blended reading (Sanskrit + English inline)
Unfortunately, in Kali-yuga many persons are not attracted to the authorized Vedic literatures. Minimizing the transcendental process of hearing and chanting the glories of the Personality of Godhead, they prefer to listen to useless and whimsical vibrations on the radio and television, in newspapers and magazines, and so on. Rather than hear about Kṛṣṇa from the bona fide spiritual master, they endlessly give their own opinions about everything, until they are dragged away by the force of time. After studying the temporary, limited forms of the material world, they impatiently conclude that the Absolute Truth is formless. Such persons are actually worshiping Kṛṣṇa’s illusory energy, māyā, who has been authorized to kick their stubborn heads. If instead people hear directly about Kṛṣṇa from the bona fide sources, they will very easily solve all the problems of their lives. In Kali-yuga people are constantly suffering from many psychological, social, economic, historical, political and existential problems. But all these nightmarish problems can be removed as soon as one awakens to the transcendental reality of the Personality of Godhead, who is eternal, full of bliss and knowledge and beyond the bewildering manifestations of the material energy. The Lord appears within this universe so that people can observe, hear about and glorify His actual activities. In this difficult Age of Kali we should all seriously take advantage of this opportunity.
- Replace one stretch of news, social media, or background entertainment today with audio of Kṛṣṇa's activities from a bona fide source.
- Speak about something you have heard of Kṛṣṇa to at least one person today, however briefly, so śravaṇa becomes kīrtana on your lips.
- Notice when you are about to offer your own opinion on everything, and instead ask, 'What have I actually heard from guru and śāstra on this?'
- Which 'useless and whimsical vibrations' have I been treating as harmless background that are in fact crowding out hearing about Kṛṣṇa?
- Where in my life am I trying to solve a psychological, economic, or existential problem by analysis alone, instead of by hearing and glorifying the Lord?
- Audit one week of your feed and replace a fixed slot — the commute, the gym, the wind-down before sleep — with a class or kīrtana from a bona fide source.
- When friends or classmates are dissecting every opinion online, practice saying, 'I haven't heard enough from people who actually know — let me listen first,' instead of joining the noise.
- Pick one pastime of Kṛṣṇa you have actually heard from your teacher and retell it to a friend this week, so hearing turns into kīrtana in your own voice.
- Set a household rhythm — at a meal, on a drive, before bed — where Kṛṣṇa's activities are heard together, so your children's ears are shaped by śravaṇa, not only by screens.
- When a real family problem appears — money, schooling, conflict — sit with your spouse and first hear something from śāstra or a trusted teacher on it, before strategizing.
- Notice the hours given to news, scrolling, and entertainment in the home, and reclaim even one of them weekly as family hearing and chanting of the Lord's glories.
- Make hearing and glorifying Kṛṣṇa's activities the unhurried center of your day now, when career and child-rearing no longer compete for the prime hours.
- Become a source of hearing for grandchildren and younger seekers — tell them, in your own words, the pastimes you have received, so kīrtana passes through your line.
- As the body declares its limits, loosen attachment to commentary on world events and let the closing chapter of life be saturated with the Lord's caritāni rather than the day's headlines.
- Treating hearing as passive intake — letting lectures play while the mind roams — rather than as active reception that should bloom into kīrtana.
- Reserving śravaṇa and kīrtana for crises only, instead of recognizing them as the daily means of crossing Kali's darkness.
- Listening widely to speculative or impersonalist commentary and assuming it counts as hearing about Kṛṣṇa, when the verse specifies hearing from bona fide sources.
- Share one 'whimsical vibration' you have quietly justified in your daily intake, and let the group test whether it actually serves your bhakti or merely soothes you.
- Where in your life have you seen a problem dissolve through hearing and chanting, and where are you still skeptical that it can?
- Debate honestly: does today's flood of online kīrtana and lectures fulfill this verse, or can it become its own form of distracted consumption?
Two friends are commuting together. One pulls up the day's news and political commentary on the phone; the other suggests playing a recorded class on Kṛṣṇa's pastimes instead. The first friend says, 'I need to stay informed about the world — that spiritual stuff can wait until I have time.' Enact the conversation so that the second friend, drawing on this verse, neither preaches at nor capitulates to the first, but offers a concrete trade for today's drive.
- Just listening to old stories and chanting names sounds like escapism. Real problems — economic, political, psychological — need real action, not pious entertainment.
Prabhupāda directly addresses this in the purport: the psychological, social, economic, and political problems of Kali-yuga are precisely what are removed when one awakens to the transcendental reality of the Personality of Godhead. Hearing and glorifying are not escape from problems; they are the one activity that touches the root the other approaches cannot reach, while right action in the world continues on that foundation. - Why insist on hearing about Kṛṣṇa specifically? Surely any sincere spiritual practice — meditation, formless contemplation, service — would also carry a sincere person across.
The verse specifies caritāni — Kṛṣṇa's actual activities — and Prabhupāda warns that those who study only the temporary forms of this world impatiently conclude the Absolute is formless and end up worshiping māyā. Gauḍīya teachers honor the personal: it is hearing about a real Person, with real activities, from bona fide sources, that engages the heart and crosses tamas, not abstraction about consciousness in general.
