My dear Vasudeva, you and your good wife Devakī have manifested great transcendental love for Kṛṣṇa, accepting Him as your son. Indeed, you are always seeing the Lord, embracing Him, speaking with Him, resting with Him, sitting together with Him and taking your meals with Him. By such affectionate and intimate association with the Lord, undoubtedly both of you have completely purified your hearts. In other words, you are already perfect.

The words ātmā vām pāvitaḥ in this verse are very significant. Ordinary conditioned souls are required to purify their existence by practicing the regulative principles of bhakti-yoga and learning how to offer all of their activities in the devotional service of the Lord. Such a regulative, gradual process, however, cannot be applied to those exalted souls who are personally attending the Lord as His parents, boyfriends, girlfriends, advisors, sons, etc. Due to Vasudeva and Devakī’s intense love for Kṛṣṇa as their son, they had already achieved the highest perfectional stage of life. Although in the previous verse Śrī Nārada Muni informed Vasudeva that he and his wife had become glorious by Kṛṣṇa’s taking birth as their son, Vasudeva might have argued that other personal associates of the Lord, such as Jaya and Vijaya, had fallen down due to offending the brāhmaṇa class. Therefore, in the present verse Nārada has used the word pāvitaḥ: “You are completely purified, and therefore you are completely free from the slightest trace of discrepancy in your devotional service, due to your intense love for Kṛṣṇa.”

It is understood from the commentary of Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura that Śrī Vasudeva, Kṛṣṇa’s pastime father, is actually an eternally liberated nitya-siddha associate of the Personality of Godhead. Vasudeva has a spiritual body, just as Kṛṣṇa does, and he is always merged in the overwhelming ecstatic desire to serve Kṛṣṇa, his beautiful son. However, Nārada could understand that due to extreme humility, Vasudeva considered himself an ordinary human being and was feeling very anxious to receive transcendental instructions on the devotional service of the Lord. Accepting the ecstatic humility of Vasudeva, and to relieve his anxiety, Śrī Nārada Muni instructed him in the science of bhakti-yoga as one might instruct an ordinary human being. However, at the same time Nārada has revealed that actually Śrī Vasudeva and Devakī are already completely glorious by their unprecedented fortune of having Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma as their sons. Therefore, Nārada is telling Vasudeva, “My dear Vasudeva, do not in any way be discouraged or doubtful about your position. Undoubtedly you are immediately going back home, back to Godhead. And actually you and your good wife are the most fortunate persons.”

In conclusion, everyone should become fortunate by fully developing his dormant love for Kṛṣṇa. Many terrible demons who opposed Kṛṣṇa eventually achieved a happy state of life by their association with Kṛṣṇa. Therefore there is no doubt about the supreme bliss achieved by the loving devotees of the Lord who day and night can only think of pleasing Kṛṣṇa.

Translation
You and your wife Devakī, having manifested love for Kṛṣṇa and accepted him as your son, have purified your selves by seeing him, embracing him, speaking with him, resting with him, sitting together with him and taking your meals with him
Intimate, affectionate service to Kṛṣṇa as a beloved person — seeing, embracing, eating, resting with Him — purifies the heart utterly.
Practical Applications
  • Today, treat your worship not as a duty but as personal contact — look at Kṛṣṇa's deity or picture as you would look at someone you love.
  • When you eat, sit, or rest, silently invite Kṛṣṇa into that ordinary moment so that even mundane acts become affectionate association.
  • Refuse the impersonalist drift in your sādhana — name Him, speak to Him directly, and let your bhakti carry the warmth of a family bond.
Reflection Questions
  • Where in my devotional life have I settled for distant reverence when Kṛṣṇa is inviting the intimacy Vasudeva and Devakī enjoyed?
  • What would change in my day if I believed that affectionate association with Kṛṣṇa — not technical correctness — is what truly purifies me?
For Each Age Group
youth
  • When you study or take an exam, place a small picture of Kṛṣṇa on your desk and quietly include Him in the effort, the way you would include a close friend.
  • Stop performing devotion online for peers — speak to Kṛṣṇa privately, in your own words, the way Devakī might have spoken to her son.
  • Pick one daily routine — eating in the hostel mess, walking to class, scrolling at night — and consciously invite Kṛṣṇa into it instead of leaving Him at the altar.
householder
  • In family meals, offer the food to Kṛṣṇa first and serve it as prasāda, letting the daily table become a place of association rather than mere consumption.
  • When holding or playing with your children, remember that Vasudeva's purification came through such ordinary acts done for Kṛṣṇa — quietly see Kṛṣṇa in your own child's well-being without confusing the two.
  • In stressful work or money decisions, take a moment to address Kṛṣṇa personally before acting, as Vasudeva would have consulted his beloved son, not an abstract divine principle.
senior
  • As bodily strength wanes, let your sitting, resting, and meals become forms of association with Kṛṣṇa — He accepts the smallest gesture from one who turns to Him with affection.
  • When mentoring children, grandchildren, or younger devotees, point them toward a personal Kṛṣṇa, not vague spirituality, so that the line of intimate bhakti continues through you.
  • Loosen attachment to lifelong roles and reputations by re-centering daily life around direct, affectionate remembrance of Kṛṣṇa, trusting Nārada's assurance that such love is itself the highest perfection.
Common Pitfalls
  • Assuming this verse licenses skipping the regulative principles of bhakti-yoga, when Nārada explicitly contrasts the conditioned soul's path with Vasudeva and Devakī's exceptional position.
  • Imitating the rasa of vātsalya — pretending Kṛṣṇa is one's own child — without the qualification, and thereby slipping into sahajiyā sentimentality.
  • Reducing 'intimate love' to a feeling one manufactures, instead of recognizing it as the natural fruit of sustained, humble service to Kṛṣṇa.
Discussion Prompts
  • Vasudeva is a nitya-siddha yet feels anxious and asks for instruction like an ordinary man — what does his humility ask of us who are far less qualified?
  • Nārada tells Vasudeva and Devakī they are already perfect because of their love for Kṛṣṇa as son — does this threaten or clarify the path of regulated sādhana for the rest of us?
  • If 'ordinary' acts like eating and resting purified Vasudeva and Devakī because Kṛṣṇa was present, what in our daily life is being wasted because we have not invited Him in?
Role Play

One student plays a sincere devotee who has been chanting and following the regulative principles for years but feels their bhakti is 'dry'; another plays a senior Vaiṣṇava who must use this verse to show them the difference between mechanical purification and the purification that comes from cultivating a personal, affectionate relationship with Kṛṣṇa — without encouraging imitation of Vasudeva's specific rasa.

Objections & Responses
  • This sounds like spiritual nepotism — Vasudeva and Devakī are 'already perfect' just because Kṛṣṇa happened to be born in their house. What about the rest of us?
Nārada himself addresses this. Vasudeva is revealed by Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura to be a nitya-siddha, eternally qualified for that role; his position is not luck but eternal relationship. For conditioned souls, Nārada teaches the regulative path of bhakti-yoga in the very same conversation, so that we too can awaken our dormant love for Kṛṣṇa and join the same family in our own appropriate rasa.
  • Treating God as a child seems disrespectful and theologically confused — surely the Supreme deserves awe, not lullabies.
Awe-and-reverence (aiśvarya) is real, but the Gauḍīya line shows that Kṛṣṇa Himself most relishes being approached in intimate moods where His Godhood is, by His own arrangement, hidden. The purport is careful: this mood is not a license for us to imitate Vasudeva, but a window onto how completely the Supreme reciprocates love — and why our distant, formal worship, however correct, leaves the heart only partially purified.
