If any of the members of the four varṇas and four āśramas fail to worship or intentionally disrespect the Personality of Godhead, who is the source of their own creation, they will fall down from their position into a hellish state of life.

The words na bhajanti in this verse refer to those who out of ignorance do not worship the Supreme Lord, whereas the word avajānanti refers to those who have actually been informed of the supreme position of the Lord but still show Him disrespect. It has already been described that the four spiritual and occupational orders of life are generated from the body of the Lord. In fact, the Supreme Lord is the source of everything, as described in Bhagavad-gītā (10.8) : ahaṁ sarvasya prabhavaḥ. Those who foolishly do not inquire into the position of the Personality of Godhead, as well as those who disrespect the Lord in spite of having heard of His transcendental position, will certainly fall down from the varṇāśrama-dharma system, as described by the words sthānād bhraṣṭāḥ. The words patanty adhaḥ indicate that one who falls from the varṇāśrama system will have no means of avoiding sinful activities; nor will such a person receive any credit for performing sacrifice, and thus he will gradually sink down into lower and lower species of life in hellish conditions. Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura has pointed out that the original cause of offending the Lord and falling down from one’s position is one’s not learning how to properly worship a bona fide spiritual master. One who is trained to offer respectful obeisances and worship to the bona fide spiritual master automatically offers proper worship to the Supreme Lord. Without the mercy of a bona fide spiritual master, even a so-called religious man will gradually become atheistic, offend the Lord by foolish speculation and fall into a hellish condition of life. Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura has pointed out that the puruṣa mentioned in this verse is Lord Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, who is glorified in the Puruṣa-sūkta prayers. If one is proud of his high social position and enviously thinks that the Lord is also a creation of nature and that there is no absolute entity who is the origin of all beings, then such a puffed-up fool will certainly fall down from the varṇāśrama system and become just like an unregulated animal.

Translation
If any of the members of the four varṇas and four āśramas fail to worship the Lord and thus disrespect the Lord, who is the source of their own creation, they will fall down from their āśrama. Among them, those who do not worship the original father from whom one is born (ātma-prabhavam), and who thus disrespect him, since they do not worship the elder who must be worshipped, fall from their āśrama.
Failing to worship — or actively disrespecting — Kṛṣṇa, the source of one's own birth, collapses one's varṇāśrama position and drags the soul downward.
Practical Applications
  • Before any varṇāśrama duty today — work, parenting, study — offer one explicit verbal acknowledgment that Kṛṣṇa is the source of your very capacity to act.
  • Identify one place where you have 'heard' about Kṛṣṇa's supreme position but still quietly act as if He is optional, and worship Him there first today.
  • Offer respectful obeisances to a bona fide spiritual master before sitting to your own sādhana, so that worship of the Lord flows through the proper channel.
Reflection Questions
  • Where am I closer to avajānanti than to na bhajanti — informed of Kṛṣṇa's supreme position, yet quietly disrespecting Him by how I live?
  • Which 'position' (role, status, competence) am I proud of in a way that subtly denies that Kṛṣṇa is its source?
For Each Age Group
youth
  • Before an exam or interview, name aloud that the intelligence and opportunity come from Kṛṣṇa — not as superstition, but as honest acknowledgment of your source.
  • Notice when your friend group treats Kṛṣṇa as one option among many spiritual brands; quietly refuse that flattening in your own speech and posts.
  • Find one teacher or senior devotee whose guidance you will actually take seriously this semester, so your worship has a real channel and not just an app.
householder
  • Begin a family decision — money, schooling, a move — by openly acknowledging Kṛṣṇa as the source of the family itself, before weighing options.
  • Audit where professional pride has crept in: do you speak of 'my' career and 'my' household as self-made? Re-frame one such sentence today in front of your spouse or children.
  • Establish a household pattern of offering respect to a bona fide spiritual master — through reading, prasāda, or fixed remembrance — so the children see worship flowing through proper authority.
senior
  • Reflect on the 'position' you have built over a lifetime — career, reputation, family standing — and consciously hand its source back to Kṛṣṇa today.
  • Speak to a younger family member about Kṛṣṇa as ātma-prabhavam īśvaram, not as inherited culture but as the actual origin of their life and yours.
  • Loosen one attachment that is quietly functioning as avajānanti — a stance, possession, or grievance that keeps Kṛṣṇa at the edge — and offer it before it has to be taken.
Common Pitfalls
  • Treating worship as a private sentiment while one's varṇāśrama duties are performed as if self-generated and self-owned.
  • Assuming ignorance (na bhajanti) is harmless and only open disrespect (avajānanti) is dangerous — the verse warns about both.
  • Trying to bypass the bona fide spiritual master and worship the Lord directly, which Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura identifies as the root of falling down.
Discussion Prompts
  • Share a concrete area of your life where you function within varṇāśrama (work, family, student life) but rarely acknowledge Kṛṣṇa as its source — what would change if you did?
  • Discuss the difference between na bhajanti and avajānanti in your own circles: which one is more common among educated, informed seekers today, and why?
  • Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura ties falling down to not properly worshiping a bona fide spiritual master — where does the group agree or disagree with that diagnosis?
Role Play

A senior colleague, proud of decades of ethical professional conduct, says: 'I do my duty well, I harm no one — why do I need to worship anyone, let alone Kṛṣṇa?' One student plays the colleague; another responds as a Gauḍīya friend using the language of sthānād bhraṣṭāḥ and ātma-prabhavam īśvaram, without lecturing.

Objections & Responses
  • This verse sounds like religious coercion — worship or be punished. Isn't that just spiritual fear-mongering?
It is not arbitrary punishment but cause and effect. Kṛṣṇa is ātma-prabhavam īśvaram, the source of one's own existence; refusing to recognize one's source is itself the fall. The verse describes a natural collapse of position, not a vindictive sentence.
  • Plenty of decent, ethical people never worship Kṛṣṇa and live good lives — so the verse seems empirically wrong.
Prabhupāda explains that the descent is gradual and across lifetimes — sthānād bhraṣṭāḥ patanty adhaḥ unfolds through species, not in one news cycle. Outward decency without acknowledgment of one's source slowly loses its protective varṇāśrama footing.
