సమాహితం యస్య మన: ప్రశాన్తం దానాదిభి: కిం వద తస్య కృత్యమ్ । అసంయతం యస్య మనో వినశ్యద్ దానాదిభిశ్చేదపరం కిమేభి: ॥ ౪౬ ॥

samāhitaṁ yasya manaḥ praśāntaṁ

[samaahitam yasya manah prashaantam]

dānādibhiḥ kiṁ vada tasya kṛtyam

[daanaadibhih kim vada tasya krityam]

asaṁyataṁ yasya mano vinaśyad

[asamyatam yasya mano vinashyad]

dānādibhiś ced aparaṁ kim ebhiḥ

[daanaadibhish ched aparam kim ebhih]

Translation

If one’s mind is controlled, then tell me what need is there for ritualistic charity and other pious rituals. And if one’s mind remains uncontrolled because of laziness or agitation, then of what use are these engagements for him? The wise depend only upon control of the mind. If the mind is controlled (samāhitam), what is the need of charity and other actions? If the mind is uncontrolled because of laziness (vināśyat) or is agitated (aparam), what is the use of charity and other works?
